  • Here is our new brooder. Designed and built by me just in time for the arrival of our new laying flock. We will use this for all our chicken brooding.

    most interesting brooder I've seen so far. I'd be really keen to see a full list of the products you've used and a "how to" if you would be so kind ;)

    I love this and the wheels for your chicken tractor! We built some from hoops and fence rail and conduit also, so much lighter than wood and lasts longer! Couple questions though, just curious why you put the wheels inside? Also what are you using on the edge of the bubble insulation to put your grommets in, is that some kind of heavy duty duct tape? Only other thing I could think of is maybe it's tarp repair tape? Thank you! Would love it if you posted more farm vids, UA-cam needs innovators like you posting noter to inspire us all!

    VERY nice. I see that the bubble insulation is attached with zip ties. But, is the flashing attached to the fence rail frame? Pop rivets maybe? Also, how did you attach the hardware cloth to the frame of the chicken door? How often do you have to change the bedding?
    We made our (much smaller) movable brooder with a 1/2" hardware cloth floor so poop just falls on the ground. Doesn't look as good as yours, though!

    Not very efficient. It wouldn't work off the grid. And they don't get much fresh air.
    Hmm... a solution I found some years ago for mice: when they are ready to journey out, they will be able to jump or climb to an exit.
    This way you have a way to measure the quality of your chickens much earlier.

    hey i just bought 60 chics one day old. all of em. i have a question. 8 weeks old its ok to put them with the old chikens in the cage?

    • @weathervanefarm
      @weathervanefarm  8 років тому +3

      We rarely put new layers in with old layers. The one time we did it, we took great care to familiarize them to each other. We built a internal screen wall in the chicken house so they could see and smell each other for a couple of weeks before we let them mix. I wouldn't start to do any of this until the young birds are similar in size to the old birds.
