Dave Mustaine Talks Rust in Peace, Dimebag, and New Megadeth Album

- Опубліковано 23 вер 2020
- Megadeth are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1990 LP, Rust in Peace. In fact, frontman Dave Mustaine and company just published an oral history of the album.
The book, titled Rust in Peace: The Inside Story of the Megadeth Masterpiece, features a foreword by Slash, and stories from Mustaine, bassist David Ellefson, and former members of the band, among others. It details how Megadeth struggled with drug addiction, finances, and more, only to record one of the definitive albums of their career.
While working on Megadeth’s upcoming 16th album, Mustaine checked in with us via Zoom to discuss Rust in Peace, the pandemic, and the band’s forthcoming LP. The metal legend also updated us on his health, following his cancer diagnosis last year.

This poor guy cannot make it through a single interview without being asked about Metallica
Leaders always have others evaluating off them in any area of life.
That's obvious, there would be no kill'em all without him
By him having been given the boot from the Metallica camp. It just gave rise to the legend we all know now as Megadeth. Blessing in disguise.
No shit!!!!!
No shit. It makes no sense either since Megadeth, in all it's different versions, has been a much better band than Metallica.
I ran into Dave at a pizza place in Franklin, TN (where he lives), I was working for a delivery company. Was picking up a Zzaaa, and he walked in. Small family joint. That was right after his mother in law passed from Alzheimers. He was with his son. and I politely introduced myself, gave my condolenses to the family, as I had had a front seat caring for my grandfather with alzheimers. He was super nice, and took a picture with me. I could tell everyone in the pizza place had no idea who he was. Cool dude. A fellow Tennesseean.
Whoa thats insane
Wow you're so lucky
I'm surprised he didn't charge for that picture.......har har har
@@rocketmail125Mushroom?
Mustaine lives in Tennessee?
Be cool if interviewers could ask things other than his past addictions, past lineups, and metallica
I’d really wanna start and interview channel where I ask musicians like what’s their other hobby’s and like what’s their favorite animals and just random stuff that people don’t ask, I emailed megadeths maganment team to ask for an interview when I was supose to see them in July of 2020 but the show didn’t happen and they never emailed me back
To me he always seems like a really nice and intelligent guy. His no bullshit honesty is what upsets a lot of people imho.
Honesty upsets a lot of people. How do you dare speak the truth!!!
I met him once and he was such a pretentious douche. Maybe I caught him on a bad day, but as they say, never meet your heroes. He was way younger though and so was I.
@@Watergrovey when did you meet him? If it was early to mid 90s dave, that was dave in his prime douchiness, and a bad day would have made him an even bigger douche because insecurity causes people to hyper elevate their egos.
i met dave two years and ago at a guitar clinic and he's a really smart, humble, and funny guy. We talked about the inspiration and central ideas of songs like holy wars and kick the chair and he thanked me for thinking deeply about his lyrics.
I met him in 87 in Long Beach California at a punk rock show, i was just a 16 or 17 year old kid and he was cool as shit to me. Ellefson was with him too, he wearing a Flotsam and Jetsam t-shirt :D This was just before Newsted actually joined Metallica. I asked Mustaine all the questions about Metallica and who wrote what songs etc - he answered everything straight up and didn't have any attitude or anything. I got him stoned too :D
@@chickenbeek hahaha you met him before he started taking heroine like crazy. You got lucky man. Awesome
God I love Dave imitating other people's voice. He has a gift for it.
Yeah, he even imitated his "real" self on "Sweating Bullets"!! 😮
Every time he plays Sweating Bullets live, when he says "Hello me, meet the real me" it's actually him imitating himself ᵒᶠ ʰᶦᵐ ᶦᵐᶦᵗᵃᵗᶦⁿᵍ ʰᶦᵐˢᵉˡᶠ----- from previous shows
He’s hilarious. I cracked up
CAN I BRING MA BRUDDER
He honestly does because he has true vocal talent. His voice can be.... weird sounding. But he's got very good range and overall vocal skills.
Who else came here just to hear the part about Dimebag??
YEESSS!! awesome Dimebag lovely man and musician! will always be my guitar IDOL
No i came for the new album
Where is that part??
@@danilobatista1329 dime sempre
@@marcotaproot Exatamente!! ha varios bons, mas a genialidade e energia que sai da guitarra do Dime e unica!!
Dave goes on a whole story and the interviewer is like 🙄 “so your new book”
There must have been an edit there. It was so abrupt.
It's Always Something idk it was like that the whole interview 😆
FreshRevenge now I understand why Dave hates doing interviews.
I'm pretty sure that "interviewer" is Dweezil Zappa, you know? The son of Frank Zappa?
Aw man I wouldve wanted to hear his whole story
Man Dave looks a lot better than he has for a while.
May you live on forever Dave! This planet needs you!
"CAN I BRING MY BROTHER"
Brother LOVE and LOYALTY right there! Bless them brothers gave us amazing music! was a pleasure and outstanding to watch them live in Portugal 1994! best metal gigs ever
@@danilobatista1329 there is one one UA-cam from that time Portugal. If you where there I envy you from the depths!🤘
I find that to be an honorable trait. He loved his brother. We should all have brothers like that.
Hot tip to the interviewer: don't just rigidly stick to your questions, ask follow ups, and in particular when someone talked about their family member dying, maybe acknowledge that instead of just going "uh huh" and moving on...
For real. The interviewer seemed very stiff and wasn't engaging at all. Shame, because Dave is a great subject.
It was very painful to watch him have no empathy or what so ever.
Worst interviewer I have ever seen
Yep, agreed, dude, if you are getting interveiws of this calibre, up your game bro. Your asking him the same questions the last guy did...
An interviewer should almost never boldy change the subject it should be almost a natural change in conversation. A good interviewer knows how to steer the conversation not run it.
Dystopia was great.
Dave is the best
Dave is looking rough, but glad he's healthy. The OG of speed metal.
He actually looks a lot better than he did a few months ago.
He s 59 too
That’s the chemotherapy. Thankfully he’s cancer free now so now he just needs to rest.
Yeah my first thought was he looks a lot better than he has in a while. He looks old but looks like Dave.
Not to mention the years of drug and alcohol abuse
5:58 that whole scene you can hear at the very end of the cover of paranoid they did.
I laugh at that every time I listen to that song
I wish the best for Dave to recover and of course I am thrilled for the new album.
He’s cured!
One of my most favorite Dave Mustaine quotes was when he said "GLAM just stands for Gay LA Metal". Hahahahah lol.
What? That is what it stands for
Back when bands had enough moxie to be politically incorrect.
....and now he won't tour with certain bands that he deems too "satanic"....
@@PeteUnsigned i think it's ok to have your standards change. But glam never deserves respect. Haha
@@morsteen I feel the whole glam metal thing was never to be taken too seriously. Steel Panther still reminds us of this. Corny and yet you can't help but not look away.
7:34 lmao that impersonation of Dime is on point
So glad to hear Dave Mustaine is OK. That guy is awesome. A true legend.
The Riff Master - Dave Mustaine FOREVER 🤘🤘
5:58 this bit was actually used on the end of the “Paranoid” cover Megadeth did.
I knew it! Heard him mention it and checked if someone else knew.
This reminds me of Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney on SNL.
Thank you for still being here and making us so happy Dave. Can't wait to see you again, here, in your second home 🇦🇷
Dave: telling his life story
Interviewer: "yea.....anyway, lets talk about something else."
Dave for president.
I'm happy for the recovery, and I'm excited for the new album 🤘
Loved the DIME impression from MegaDave 🤘🏻
Wow after he has beaten the cancer his voice got so much better and younger
Respect to Dave best guitarist in the genre.
7:34 accidentally he made a great Hulk Hogan impression
😂 He sure did!
*Great candid interview with Dave, i really enjoyed hearing his take on the band and the road. And what a cool son he has. Thanks guys for this inside peek it was great!*
Dave ,You are a Beast....Man....
Don't ever give up the Fight ...That is your Beast Mode, Don't matter The Bad Hands Your Dealt..You Fight your Way to the Top.....
We Need More MEGADETH....for many more Years...Rock On...

"Hell yeah! Brother!! Getcha' Pull!!!" - Dimebag Darrell
Lmao Mustaine got distracted with his Pantera story
I wish it kept going lmao
that shit was awesome bruh
That dimebag impression 😂😂
glad u ok bro 30yrs lovin yr music u aint goin out like that much respect yr positivity
Dave, Dave He’s our man! If he can’t shred it nobody can!
I really enjoyed reading the book, read it in 4 hours straight. I liked the concept of everybody having a say and able to comment on each other, just like you write something and then pass the book on to next guy.
This interview was great! The Dimebag story was hilarious.
Dimebag actually invented a drink called the "black tooth grin". It's one shot of Crown, one shot of Segrams, and then just a tiny splash of coke to change the color. Not meant for rookies! 🤗
Dave was such an inspiration to me when I was a teenager. I never thought he would be living in my hometown all these years later. Wish I could meet him.
Great interview! Wow, 30 years flown by trippy great album! Thanks for sharing everything Dave! Glad you`re doing well cannot wait for your new album! Back to concerts eventually as seen every band venue of Megadeth members over the years! I see you play as lead guitarist with Metallica you were shredding hard and blew my mind! Same as Megadeth awesome thanks for the inspiration as a guitarist and still my inspiration today! I headbang daily to Megadeth! Sure you know this trick for voice longevity! This is potato chips with salt for throat and vocal cords as all my band singers did this since the 1980s! Phil in Pantera did this as wells seen years later on YT videos! Covid-19 again! Waving a hand hello from Missouri, USA. Be safe everyone!
Such an incredible person. I would love to meet him. A master craftsman of the art of songwriting and a incredible musician.
I’m glad you are feeling better Dave. 🙏🏼
Thanks dave ive been feeling depressed lately this interview cheered me up some.
Dave so cool started to listen to my childhood music again .love to go back over megadeath stuff
I remember bying rest in peace .Great album just listening to it again .it's sad what happened with James and Co. But everything is ment to be .dave not watched since I was 15 or so .how much he changed .great guy .hope he does OK with his illness .love n peace ❤✌ ❤
"See you later Mustaine"
I spat my drink out haha dave’s impression of that was great.
DAVE MUSTAINE, love your lyrics&the way you deliver them as I still share that passion for the shit that matters in this twisted world called life. Fan from the onset and I absolutely love your guitar technique/ sound! Actually in the beginnings of learning to play the instrument so been watching like live in 92 Italy and Woodstock live some others over and over to figure this thing out (in my darkest hour, À tout le mound) man HIT ME HARD!!! as of recent. May God bless you and yours.
Once being in a COMA & having cancer in his life, I'd say he's a lucky survivor!!
Besides that, never displeased with MEGADETH!!!
Good luck Dave!!
Happy bday Dave... you are more than an inspiration for all of us.
Dave looks 20 years younger without a beanie
His voice doesn't sound as hoarse as it has the past year. That's good.
I loved that revolver video...I have a copy somewhere on VHS but really wished I could've gotten a new one on DVD
Great story where Dave is talking about hidden treasures cover of black sabbath paranoid and Nick keeps going....I love the fact that they left it on the recording.... super cool
u was penultimate band i saw b4 global shutdown and you was so good tight asf and loved every minute ty
So happy Dave is healthier these days. His hair is even starting to look good now. And the drums/bass/ rhythm guitars are done on the new record!!!! So sick!!!!
I wish I could see you Guys live!
Rust in peace came out the year i was born, I saw the 20th aniversary with slayer and testament at Chicago and i would go see the 30th!
dave looks really good here, glad he's doing much better
Dimebag and Mustaine together on stage would be a sight to behold.
I love Dave. He sounds so upbeat and well in this video.
Great to see Dave back in shape.
Great to see you healthy Dave we love you!
I love Evolver documentary. Megadeth should do another one with this line up.
God bless Dave. He’s hilarious 😂 as well - his voice imitations are killer. I’ll read that book
Thanks Dave, thank UA-cam dude. And Dave ✊
I ABSOLUTELY love his impressions of Dime 😂😂😂😂 I’m laughing my ass off 🤘
That's so funny that he talked about that recording mistake lol. I always heard that on the record and found it to be interesting and awesome. 🤘🤘
Now that's how you ask metallica questions. I've always wondered how Dave truly felt. It was asked appropriately and answered well
@Shockheadd45 That's the first time I've heard it asked that way. Polite and respectful. Most people ask with a tone that suggests they're making fun of him. Or mocking him just to getna rise out of him.
XOXO TILL 'DETH, MR. MUSTAINE!!
Dave! 😌❤️❤️❤️
I would ask Dave if he is ever interested in making pop songs for pop artists, because although Risk wasn't a good Megadeth record, it is a great record under any other name. I love it for what it is and it really proved Dave could write some really great commercial songs. If he ever retired from Megadeth, he should consider a gig writing songs for other people. It would probably pay more, too.
At first I was gonna disagree, but you might actually be on to something. He is very good at writing catchy hooks.
Dave is so cool. All the best to him.
My condolences on your sister passing Dave. We don't live forever, however, the memory remains. Some we wish we would have done this or that but then again we did what we did and It's the way it happened.
Go Dave!
14:48 new album part
Megadeth always put out a record every 2 or 3 years so being able to work on material for 5+ years means this could be an epic record . for me my issue is usually NOT Dave's voice ( love the voice ) but the fact for some reason after system he quit rhyming words and one line of lyrics will be longer ( or shorter ) then the previous line and it knocks the appeal of the record down a few notches .
I'm not surprised to hear the singing is done last cause that's what it sounds like . epic music and solos then sounds like lyrics and singing are rushed just to get record done
I personally loved Mustaine's vocals on Dystopia. They were dark and gritty and rough. They fit the music well, especially on songs like Lying in State
I agree with your psrt about him not rhyming anymore. I think that does really suck that he changed his writing style and I hope he brings it back at least a little bit on this record
@@VicSellsPeace I agree I have no issue with his vocal style . what I have issue with is not making any effort to rhyme words sometimes or how one sentence will be much longer or shorter then the next . it makes it sound like he's singing sentences from a book page or newspaper article . its not too bad with the threat is real , dystopia and lying in state but the rest is unlistenable dispite the music and solos being epic .It ruined the whole album ENDGAME which was musically as good as rust in peace and ruined most of united abominations which was also musically epic . again , t's not daves voice , I've always loved his voice .
Mustaine's sentence-like lyrics (can't really sing along to his songs) and his voice (not lead singer quality) are the reason a technically inferior band dominated Megadeth in popularity. Mustaine can say whatever he wants about teaching Hetfield to play guitar, but Hetfield outwrites and outsings Mustaine by leaps and bounds.
Listen to Four Horsemen and then listen to Mechanix. One is a lead singer and the other is a great guitarist who should never have stopped looking for a lead singer.
@@bokononisti2820 you're comparing the best song on kill em all to the worst song on killing is my business . dave wrote mechanix when he was 15 . Compare four horsemen to looking down the cross .
And don't get me wrong . I talk trash but endgame , United abominations and dystopia and most of the system has failed kicks the shit out of anything metallica put out the last 30 + years and they don't put out albums every 3 years like megadeth it's 5-8 years so they have no excuse for garbage records . theyve put out like 2 metal songs In that time that Kirk ruined with fruity lame solos
I am a simple man, I see Dimebag, I click.
Love you Dave!!! 💓🔥👏👏👏
Dave is a rock star.
I remember buying Rust in Peace on vinyl back in 90 I think, and it just blew me away.. It really is a Masterpiece and a Master Class in Heavy Metal music. Dave Mustaine is a genius. when he plays those so complicated and intricate Riffs 'WHILE SINGING' is really amazing, and of course he is an amazing lead guitarist/songwriter too..I am glad to see Dave is doing well he has mellowed out a lot and there still is a tinge of the old Dave there, the angry Dave, but then again without the angry Dave we probably wouldn't have got that amazing music.. There ain't many Megadeth tribute bands out there, because the music is sooo technical. Anyway I would love to meet Dave and I wish you well mate the next album could top it all, cheers, an old fan..
the whole cancer thing has mad me an even bigger fan of dave mustaine because I suffered from colon cancer at the same time as mustaine was battling throat cancer . I always was a fan of megadeth but since the cancer , I been rockin alot of megadeth and im glad to see mustaine beat cancer and as of now I won the battle also but I won't give puffed up in pride but I pray that we both stay free from cancer .
Dude that made me respect Dimebag even more that he said he wouldn’t come if Dave wouldn’t take Vinnie too. Thats love man. Awesome.
GREAT interview (dave rules).
Always a cool guy. Looking forward to the new album! Dystopia was magnificent.
I only got to see megadeth live once back in 2010 but it was the 20th anniversary of rust in peace and they played the whole album love from start to end and they played it perfect the only one thing I would of loved just like alot of other people was had nick and marty been in the band
Luckyyyyyyyy!
This interviewer takes forever to string a coherent sentence together
Awkward. Chill dude.
@Rage Theatre2020 Beside ignore everything Dave said just to go to the next question. Should have been more like a conversation
He is clearly nervous.
@@DM-ig4cm are they not a news outlet? Isn’t it their job to interview people. Not like Dave was being hard to work with.
That dude is nervous AF, Dave is turbo cool lol. Great interview!!
Two of my favorite hunks talkin! Ray Romano and Dave mustaine.
God I cant wait to see another megadeth show!!!
Man Dave seems really chill these days! Glad he's doing so well and looking better after his recovery! This interviewer is terrible aswell immediately changing questions after tells him an interesting and exciting heartfelt story from his life as a famous rockstar!
No matter how many albums he tries to keep putting out. There just will never ever be anything that comes close to rust in piece, countdown, and youthanasia. You could throw peace in there as well. The 4 biggest and best albums they could ever put out. Done and done.
Dave would be a really good joker
Rust in Peace. Greatest heavy metal album of all time.
yes Marty Friedman seems to be a dried guy, we can notice that in some of his instructional videos
Glad you’re doing better Dave
God, I love Dave's energy! Especially that he's only recently recovered from cancer treatment! His body may have aged but that youthful kickass vibe is still there! That story about Dimebag is hilarious too ;D
One of the most cunning and inteliigent Metal musician has just spoken! Mustaine rocks, long live Megadeth!
Maaaan how could you ignore the story dave was telling you.... Putting that appart, Im really glad dave is healthy
Dave has always been my favorite in pretty much anything he's done, especially when i was younger, Dave always had that it's me against the world look on life...To Dave I hope this next album finds you at No.1 I know you've been robbed a couple times and I'm sure you'd like to make it there before the party ends...Can't wait to hear the new album i'll see you Texas my friend...
Music was my first love...mustaine is my last....since 1993....thank you ‼
megadeth and mustain are and always have been, soooooo far ahead of metallica and others in terms of musical talent and songwriting ability. they just never had the corporate appeal which took metallica to the next level.
LETS GO DAVE
