A British audience would have definitely laughed at the fact that Jack Whitehall didn’t get into any plays when he was in school - The stone cold silence he was met with when he said that really surprised me, actually. You can see it in the clip, too, that he pauses slightly and is a bit taken back by the lack of laughter in response and quickly has to continue the story. I think that highlights a very solid difference between the comedy in the UK and US.
slime_pixie yeah I noticed that as well... like you don't actually find him or his jokes funny but your audience is laughing so you're like "very funny. very funny."
+Rene Henckens It's a way of showing that you are enjoying the occasion, are happy in general, that you appreciate something, or find it funny. It's a good gesture here.
I get the concept of applause. What I don't get is that US audiences wil applaud pretty much anything. "Los Angeles is fantastic" CHEERS "I like coming to the US" YAAAAY "I have a pet cat" WHOOO "That woman is friendly" APPLAUSE
EllieTheNPCBear Is that because the shows producers assume the audience is stupid and cannot decide what is funny or interesting? Sad thought. "Clap now, monkies, clap"
+Chelsea Bentley What was said that she wouldn't get ? I'm American , but i am a Jack / Fresh Meat fan. I love British comedy (and American) but trust me Ellen has been a comedian for 30 years and has worked with British comedians , DONE comedy in Brittan. She gets it , it just wasn't laugh out loud funny (plus shes jaded from doing this show every day for a decade + and hearing jokes all day)
+Chelsea Bentley He is not funny. I am not British or American and think his boring. In fact I don't find British people are very funny (lost interest after a few episodes of Live at the Apollo). The only British person I think is a little funny is Lee .....(the guy from would I lie to you)
+Jetaime Gallant British humour only British people like because only we get it if u understand what I mean, unless youre British you won't understand it whatsoever
+Chelsea Bentley I understood the jokes he made here and just didn't find it funny. When I watch that 'Lee' guy I laugh but I find everybody else British boring. I honestly didn't laugh once. If he was doing an accent I'd get it was a British humour thing but otherwise 😳
+dk17768 me too , except i was turned on to him from the show Fresh Meat , imdb . com is currently showing it free (just search Fresh Meat imdb on google , on its page there is a yellow button that will say Free at IMDB) i strongly urge you too check it out
So there seems to be some massive comment thing over comedians reusing jokes, so I thought I'd add my unneeded opinion. I think it's fine for comedians to reuse jokes. It isn't like you'd expect musicians to come up with a new song at each gig is it! They have material that works and in high pressure situations (such as being on Ellen) you're going to want to say something you know audiences react well to.
+didsomebodysaykatie ALL comedians do it (there are a few exceptions of people so funny just talking they dont need to be BUT THAT IS RARE) Dave Chapelle can do it .. 9/10 comedians use their stand up material on talk shows (almost like a commercial for their comedy) American fan of Jack here just to let you know , and i only heard him use that joke once THREE YEARS later on Apollo
stop complaining that he's saying old jokes. He's in a foreign country so he's trying to tell his best jokes to draw them in. And also this was in 2011 so calm down
I love Jack Whitehall. As an American I watch him on the UA-cam British shows and he's hysterical. Watch him on Jimmy Carr's yearly quiz show etc. he's great.
Why does she keep saying how funny he is when she isn't laughing? I love Jack Whitehall and I know how funny he is and since the audience is laughing they know it too. We don't need some woman saying "You're funny" "You're very funny" with a straight face. It's almost like she's bored and sarcastic. Is it an american thing or just this woman?
it's a characteristic that some people who work in comedy develop. This is their craft and they tend to react in a more critical way than non-professionals do. she is actually giving him a rather high compliment.
Lazy Spark Ellen is a very sweet and cordial woman, and she's been in the comedy business for quite a long time, so for her to say that he's funny, she really means it. It also means she finds him to be cute and endearing. She hardly responds that way at all, really.
I love Jack Whitehall and his dad♥️ He is hilarious. He's so funny. I love him with more people around him like on graham norton. It's funny to see him interact with people.
+Saeyka N I'm not sure you did. If you had said "proper posh unlike Victoria Beckham" that would have been funny, because she ain't posh ! She talks nice but she ain't posh by any stroke of the imagination. She's from Chingford for a start !
This is a very late answer to your question, but she brings people together and just makes people happy, I think you just have to watch more than on clip to see what she's like. No disrespect.
ive watched the ellen show, i even watched the oscars which she presented but i dont find her that funny maybe its because im british and we have different humour idk
I think I'm going to start a drinking game. As an American who watches loads of british comedy, every time someone in the comment section insists I don't understand it, I get to drink.
It was such a great show. I love Jack! At one time, someone had the full episodes and then the copyright police took them down. I wish someone would upload them again cause I really liked watching it.
***** Haha maybe! But since I haven't heard anything about him doing anything in America other than the cancelled US remake of Bad Education...but this was before that show was even out here in the UK x
I'm English and the differences he talks about are hilariously true! My family and I come to USA regularly and I'm always holding on to the airport railing not wanting to leave when it's time to go back home. USA just makes you happy - I'm literally buzzing with happiness when I get back and I feel refreshed and ready to take on anything! Thank you USA :) Love your friend across the pond x
+Chantal Arko-Dadzie Comedians don't come up with new material for every appearance. You'll find all comedians will use the same material on their talk show appearances that they do in their shows.
Unfortunately, I don't think ellen liked him the "you're hilarious" and "very funny" comments were indicative. She's usually too engrossed in a fit of laughter to even consider verbalising the hilarity if someone really makes her laugh. Ellen
Oh yeah, just like how Americans play it on the American accent too much on British television. Like, whoa, Johnny Depp, no need to speak like you normally do.
George Bailey exactly!!! its amazin tho our panel shows are so much more, like the comedians are comfortable around eachother there's a familiarity, 8out of 10 cats is hilarious
I'm sure there are some. It's a huge country. I don't think the majority are. I grew up way out in the country in Mississippi and I watch British TV a lot, mostly talk shows and quiz shows where they are being themselves and ranting. I think it is just another stereotype, like all British have very bad teeth. I don't get all the references they make but I appreciate the jokes and humor.
+Hattie Banfield Like the guy from Mississippi I am also from way down south in New Orleans, U.S. , a really dangerous city but surrounded by the "country" and a ton of my Friends watch British comedy (good comedy is good comedy) I am only here cause of Fresh Meat ,, which i got into after The Inbetweeners. I was 1st turned on to British comedy through Monty Python as a kid (which actually kind of turned me off to British comedy for a while... We have 300 million people in U.S. , of course there's gonna be a ton of people that don't get or relate to British comedy AND A TON THAT DO
Some people will hate me for this but it felt forced the clapping and the woos and you can tell Ellen didn't find him funny it didn't have the warmth I like a talk show or panel show if there's no chemistry or able to have a real chat there's a big difference between this interview and shows like QI and The Paul O Grady Show where the interviews feel like a talk you could have with your family in the sitting room or down the pub with friends
I work in M&S (basically a posh food store in the UK) and we are one of the only food stores that have customer service where the majority of employees are actively friendly. The funny thing is that I have had so many complaints from customers when I have tried to be nice because they don't know what to do. I've honestly had customers going "I prefer it when I'm at Sainsburys because they don't ask me how my day has been or whether I found everything I needed. You'll regret saying that because now I've had an awful day."
hate seeing jack use his standup from like ...7 years ago on all the talk shows he goes onto. if i have to hear that heartburn story again i'm boycotting.
RianaJulia fair point. i sat through his stand up at 02 (which i presume was his first big show) and he had ALL these jokes. i guess it's not as if it all comedians don't re-use jokes though. ...weirdly every now and then, i thought he was doing michael mcintyre impressions but maybe their accent is just the same.
this must be cringy on both sides of the Atlantic. Jack accentuating his already accentuated "proper" English accent. and Ellen just being straight up robotic.
On a scale of 1-10 of British comedians, this guy is considered a 3.5... And I'm sure he hasn't always had this fake posh accent. He also tells the same jokes on every show he goes on!
+Tam Jane Grace V it's so disappointing when comedians do that, and you realize how scripted everything is... I guess they just have to sell themselves in the few minutes they have
If people wanna diss Jack Whitehall they will get cut. I have met him and he is so lovely & genuine & nice & funny & down to earth. He's been doing this since he was 16 and now he's 23 he's been on the royal variety and live at the apollo and graham norton and he had 2 shows at the fringe in Edinburgh which were both amazing. So if you don't like him i respect that because it's your opinion but don't try and say he hasn't worked hard. Because he's worked bloody hard to get to where he is today.
I think that highlights a very solid difference between the comedy in the UK and US.
yup and when he was saying "make us laugh monkey boy" it's like they didn't know what he meant
Ikr I was like u laugh at ellen breathing but not laugh at THAT
It's 2 different countries with 2 different environments so to me, our humor depends on what and who we are surrounded by.
when ellen says "very funny" at a comedian but doesnt laugh it always seems a little offensive for some reason haha
+slime_pixie I used to think so, apparently it's a normal comedic brain thing :') to verbalize is to validate :P
It's not really a _usual_ comedic thing. I find it a bit sarcastic, even if it's not intentional. Maybe it's an American thing?
yeah...
slime_pixie yeah I noticed that as well... like you don't actually find him or his jokes funny but your audience is laughing so you're like "very funny. very funny."
Comes off as pretty condescending. Makes me think she is a bit of a prick. At least she isn't Jimmy Fallon and forces laughter every two seconds.
"I'm here to buy a phone, not make a friend!"😂😂
WinterandCoconutxx In live at the apollo he says "fuck off" after.
He was funnier then Ellen, she didn't know what to do about it.
+TheBackSeat when is ellen ever funny on her show?
+Rockmyballsplease some days she's funny
+TheBackSeat meh
No, he's funnier than Ellen, and she knew that, so she accepted it.
Zion Zix lool
Why do American audiences applaud / whooop / cheer at absolutely everything?
+Rene Henckens It's a way of showing that you are enjoying the occasion, are happy in general, that you appreciate something, or find it funny. It's a good gesture here.
I get the concept of applause.
What I don't get is that US audiences wil applaud pretty much anything.
"Los Angeles is fantastic" CHEERS
"I like coming to the US" YAAAAY
"I have a pet cat" WHOOO
"That woman is friendly" APPLAUSE
Because they are enjoying everything a lot I suppose? It's sort of just a in-the-moment thing. They're happy and on a buzz lol.
Besides, in these types of things they usually show the audience little cues for when to clap and such. That may also be the cause.
EllieTheNPCBear Is that because the shows producers assume the audience is stupid and cannot decide what is funny or interesting? Sad thought. "Clap now, monkies, clap"
It's so funny cause you can tell ellen doesn't get British comedy at all😂😂😂😂
+Chelsea Bentley What was said that she wouldn't get ? I'm American , but i am a Jack / Fresh Meat fan. +NOLAbrookz no its very evident that she doesn't really understand the British humour by her reaction
+Chelsea Bentley He is not funny. I am not British or American and think his boring. In fact I don't find British people are very funny (lost interest after a few episodes of Live at the Apollo). The only British person I think is a little funny is Lee .....(the guy from would I lie to you)

American audiences, don't you get sick of clapping and going 'WOOOO!!' every 10 seconds?
the only person who can constantly WOOO and make it better very time is ric flair
Yes
They are all leftist brainwashed women.
Have you seen the Graham Norton show? They practically clap and scream every time Graham Norton breathes.
4:20 "And I'm gonna have him on more times than I've ever had Robert Pattinson, I'm gonna have you on over and over again."
Never has him back.
I love Jack Whitehall, and I discovered him through Graham Norton, and guess what guys... I'm an American...
So did I, and so am I.
Wiredgirlable utube +12yench Both of you? No fucking way.
me too
+dk17768 me too , except i was turned on to him from the show Fresh Meat , imdb . com is currently showing it free (just search Fresh Meat imdb on google , on its page there is a yellow button that will say Free at IMDB) i strongly urge you too check it out
You should watch bad education and fresh meat

NOLAbrookz Yes!! Maybe it is just because that is a really popular joke on Apollo. idk. it's still funny.
Lol I went to the same school as Jack Whitehall and Robbert Pattinson AND Jacksgap (youtuber). When will my fame start too?
What school?
Samantha Rebecca Middleton The Harrodian school
+Sam I think you already reached your fame peak with this comment.
your telling me you go to such an amazing school and aren't taking advantage of it like they did?
speirz 1000 Currently a uni student so I will wait for my time to come haha
I love Jack Whitehall especially when he did the Live at the Apollo show.
stop complaining that he's saying old jokes. He's in a foreign country so he's trying to tell his best jokes to draw them in. And also this was in 2011 so calm down
Who's complaining? 🤔 No one. He's fantastic!
He really cranked up the poshness for this interview.
I love Jack Whitehall. As an American I watch him on the UA-cam British shows and he's hysterical. Watch him on Jimmy Carr's yearly quiz show etc. he's great.
You should check out bad education he's the main character of the 2 season show as well as the movie, you could watch it on Netflix or putlocker
+Darth Creed I LOVE THAT SHOW!! My favourite parts are when he cracks dad jokes at Mitchell 😂😂😂
+Laura Bowden haha yeah kind of a weird teacher student relationship lol
+Darth Creed "At least he has a picture of his dad, Mitchell!"
DEAD 😂😂😂
I know your comment is old, but his netflix travel series with his dad was fun too :)
Hey, don't hate on the Americans. Not all of them think the same thing. For instance, the audience.
it's a characteristic that some people who work in comedy develop. This is their craft and they tend to react in a more critical way than non-professionals do. she is actually giving him a rather high compliment.
Thanks professor
mrelevener xi what does that mean?
Lazy Spark Ellen is a very sweet and cordial woman, and she's been in the comedy business for quite a long time, so for her to say that he's funny, she really means it. It also means she finds him to be cute and endearing. She hardly responds that way at all, really.
I love Jack Whitehall and his dad♥️ He is hilarious. He's so funny. I love him with more people around him like on graham norton. It's funny to see him interact with people.
This is the first time I've ever heard him come across as really charming. Most of the time there's an air of superiority.

+Saeyka N Hahaha- "Like Victoria Beckham" Classic.
+Saeyka N I'm not sure you did. If you had said "proper posh unlike Victoria Beckham" that would have been funny, because she ain't posh ! She talks nice but she ain't posh by any stroke of the imagination. She's from Chingford for a start !

I’m pretty sure it’s his on stage persona. It’s a joke. He’s a comedian.
I watch TV to hear the guests not a constantly applauding audience.
I agree. It's almost as if the cameras are pointing the wrong way.
Wow Jack looks so nervous. You can tell just by looking at his body language
"It's a plane not a PlayStation" XD HAHAHA that's why I like being British, we have people like Jack XD
Ellen seemed like she didn't have a clue what he was talking about XD
I’m so happy jack is on Ellen!!! This American loves her some jack Whitehall!!!
One of my favourite comedians on one of my favourite shows!
This seems more like him than the standup bit on the tonight show. :)
why is the ellen show so popular in america she's not even funny..
This is a very late answer to your question, but she brings people together and just makes people happy, I think you just have to watch more than on clip to see what she's like. No disrespect.
ive watched the ellen show, i even watched the oscars which she presented but i dont find her that funny maybe its because im british and we have different humour idk
Vicky Lyle Well If you don't find her funny ya just don't, it' just opinion.
im sure americans wouldn't find british comedians funny so ya its just an opinion
Vicky Lyle I just don't find american comedy as funny as britsh comedy, it's so different. British is more blunt and witty.
I'm a newfound fan of Jack Whitehall. he is so awesome. I'm so glad his first tv debut here was on Ellen 💯
Literally love him so much
He's such a funny person, so happy he's from England
I think I'm going to start a drinking game. As an American who watches loads of british comedy, every time someone in the comment section insists I don't understand it, I get to drink.
I know, I watch tons of British TV. I love the quiz shows and the people who are usually on them.
Jack Whitehall is super underrated in the states.
I love jack Whitehall so much never fails to make me laugh!!
"I'm here to by a phone, not make a friend!" hahahahaha, I'm loving him!
does the american audience just clap at every available oppurtunity?
Ellen's audience is the most hyperactive audience outside of like a few game shows.
These sheep do. 😏
+BicMacAndChips1 yes
+BicMacAndChips1 every american show do it. ''and then I went to bed'' *AUDIENCE CLAP*. ''and then I ate a burger'' *AUDIENCE CLAP* :'D
It's a lot better than the annoying "laugh" tracks that was used for tv shows back in the 60s and 70s.
omg didnt know he was on Ellen! Jack you are so awesome my eyes are about to rupture because of it!
so excited that I'm seeing him next year! cant actually wait, he is hilarious :)
Im english, but I don't think Americans get the english humor.
He's such a cutie
Omg I love jack Whitehall I saw him at hammersmith Apollo and I couldn't breathe with laughter
It was such a great show. I love Jack! At one time, someone had the full episodes and then the copyright police took them down. I wish someone would upload them again cause I really liked watching it.
But why was he on here? I'm not hating or anything, I love Jack! It just seems random he was on here...Was he filming a movie or?
Maybe just to promote himself.. super late reply omg
***** Haha maybe! But since I haven't heard anything about him doing anything in America other than the cancelled US remake of Bad Education...but this was before that show was even out here in the UK x
It's funny because nobody understands the British comedy!
Molly Lever nobody except Brits themselves 😂
My two favorite comediens :3
He is unbelievable so funny had me laughing since he started talking
"Have you tried turning it on and off again?"
😂
Totally lost it with his "i was the only guy in the cinema laughing when his character die"
Hahaha
Jack's adorable & really handsome!
Saw him live!!! He was awesome :)
Never to be seen again...
+Dee Wolf or see A League of Their Own. So sorry you may not have proper Englivision. So sorry if you do not.
+Dee Wolf Again, I can't be sorry enough
+Dee Wolf Again, I can't be sorry enough
+Dee Wolf So sorry. Or you can watch Fresh Meat or his own scripted Bad Education or Backchat (also starring his father).
ReadandWite dude I'm from the uk...
This guy's so funny. America should adopt him, and make him president. To save itself from armies of yellow toupees, of course.
He's funny, funny as a brick wall.
+Da Do How nice. American, are you? What a nice comment. American's are very nice.
Martin Hatchuel I'm British, the guy's a shitty hack comedian for the mainstream, has literally 1 maybe 2 jokes that are slightly funny.
+Da Do Apologies for asking; it's just that, as I say, Americans are very nice. Trump nice.
I'm British too - I actually think he's pretty funny. Not world class, but a good comic.
My favorite comedian and WHEN did he get on Ellen?!!?!?!??!! :O
Can't believe he went to America on tour so happy for him :3
if americans dont find him funny its because he has a very typical britsh sense of humor which is basically sarcasm
His first joke is the same as his airplane joke on live at the apollo
+Chantal Arko-Dadzie the apple store one and the one about robert pattinson are from the apollo too actually
sirada praderm the guy is great and all but seriously. Get new stuff
Chantal Arko-Dadzie agree
+Chantal Arko-Dadzie Comedians don't come up with new material for every appearance. You'll find all comedians will use the same material on their talk show appearances that they do in their shows.
+Chantal Arko-Dadzie every comedian has done this, including robin williams
I love how he pulls out all his old bits in the interview ;)
Jack you smashed it, so funny! Hope you get big in the US!
Unfortunately, I don't think ellen liked him the "you're hilarious" and "very funny" comments were indicative.
She's usually too engrossed in a fit of laughter to even consider verbalising the hilarity if someone really makes her laugh.
Ellen
So true.
The problem is that american tv is too prudish and too rapid for his type of humour.
Chris P He's quite an unfunny comedian imo
A lot of people disagree though, he's playing some massive venues.
No doubt they do.. Art is subjective I suppose
omg if i went into an american shop and they started being all friendly like that i'd just think they're patronising me
two of my favourite people!
omg cant believe my 2 favourite people are on the same chatshow :O its amazing
how do americans know him? i don't think bad education and fresh meat is broadcasting in any channel.
because he is a comedian, way before he did the acting
Whitehall is playing on the English accent big time on this show
No this is how he sounds all the time.
Oh yeah, just like how Americans play it on the American accent too much on British television. Like, whoa, Johnny Depp, no need to speak like you normally do.
thats how he sounds
No he's not. That's his voice.
He isn't he sounds like posh bastard at all times lol
i'm british and just brought his new stand up DVD!!! omfg its awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
two of my favourite people in the showbussiness!!!! ;-)))
It's a plane not a playstation!!
i think americans get scared by our humour...
definitely :D
i swear part of british humour is taking the piss out of one another lol i love it
George Bailey exactly!!! its amazin tho our panel shows are so much more, like the comedians are comfortable around eachother there's a familiarity, 8out of 10 cats is hilarious

a thank you ill be here all week
When ever she said very funny it sounded sarcastic idk why
Cant come up with new material Jack?
omg my two favourite comedians
I love this because these are his stand up jokes made into an interview format!!!!
"Very funny, very funny."
Love how she says you are rely funny but didn't laugh!!
+laurence fitzgerald shes been doin this show for ever, shes jaded , she hears people telling jokes EVERY DAY (most of which are not funny)
love jack whitehall!
My fave comedian of all time.
What is he doing there !!!! I'm English and we really dont think that much of him. There is SO many better comedians then him.
BULLSHIT

It's the business. He's trying to break the U.S. Market. It's all new to them.
conaghy
maybe. i guess it makes me appreciate comedians that do new stuff every week. i believe louis ck is one of these.
To be fair, this video was uploaded in 2011. He does have a lot of repeats, but some of these might have been current 5 years ago.
RianaJulia
fair point. i sat through his stand up at 02 (which i presume was his first big show) and he had ALL these jokes. i guess it's not as if it all comedians don't re-use jokes though.

this must be cringy on both sides of the Atlantic. Jack accentuating his already accentuated "proper" English accent. and Ellen just being straight up robotic.
HOW HAVE I ONLY JUST SEEN THIS
such a fan - gld he is going to make it in america
Funny how despite being a comedian his big break came from acting.
actually he went to acting school
lol i heard him use the same plane joke.... instead he was on a plane from germany to england..... -_-
He's so hilarious! First time I saw him was at the Graham Norton show and he was hella funny there!
how have i never seen this before? freaking hilarious
Why does he tell that plane joke over and over!?
I think because it was his first time in America so he had to think of good material to use on her show.
SpamiWami101 yup, go with your most popular material if you want to make a good impression. Not wise to use new jokes that people might not get.
Pretty sure this is around 4 years ago, when he still early with the plane joke
On a scale of 1-10 of British comedians, this guy is considered a 3.5... And I'm sure he hasn't always had this fake posh accent. He also tells the same jokes on every show he goes on!
Just like to point out, that fake posh accent is real
I know that the accent is genuine being British but he seemed to pronounce his words more. I think this is probably because it's his debut in the usa
Ria Kenney Or perhaps it's because he is extremely upper class?
I must have misunderstood what posh means because I don't think of Jack as posh.
sweiland75 How could you not? It's his shtick.
An excellent show.. Naseem Ullah Khan. Vaughan, Ontario, Canada.
Omg my favourite american person (im scottish) and Jack Whitehall!!!!! Aaaah
I like Jack but his jokes are getting really old. He repeats them and now they are a more then a little tedious. He needs to get some new material.
God he 'recycles' his jokes a lot..
+Tam Jane Grace V it's so disappointing when comedians do that, and you realize how scripted everything is... I guess they just have to sell themselves in the few minutes they have
Who cares... the Americans are lapping it up.
I'm so happy that he finally made it to the US. He is the best British comedian over!!!! :)
'Im here to buy a phone not make a friend' I.DIED.LAUGHING.THEN! lol!! that was the best part!! im so proud to be british
Because he's worked bloody hard to get to where he is today.
i literally posh jack and his complete last name came out lmao thats how posh he is
love how in britian theapple shop gag is a critisism haha i love jack whitehall so much
Absolutely love him!
