    Good job young man! My advice?....#1 good dish soap for cleaning & you got that covered. Watch the inside of the teat, it can build up with nasty stuff so get that spray nozzle in there good. Get replacement teats asap, the little hole loosens up very quick & will make a mess. You also want them to have to fight (suck) to get st that milk. Other than that, you are doing great & it won't take them but 2-3 feedings to come running!!! Good job bud!👍👍👍👍👍

    Nice that videos come as often!
    I have a similar feeding it is important to wash them daily. I would offer the calves permanent good quality hay, water and concentrates thats very important for the rumen and makes them to early good eaters. Also important for the development would be a leak with minerals such as iron, selenium, manganese ....
    Best wishes from Germany!

    That is the coolest thing I seen all day. Wow the next feeding will be interesting. I believe they would drink two more. Cool video and a great way to get a herd started. I want some cows and have for a while.

    I have used the Milkbar calf feeders in New Zealand and the U.S.
    It is an excellent product. They also come in smaller and larger number of teats.
    To help you do a better job group your calves according to drinking speed and not size.
    To keep your calves healthy get them on some grass away from your buildings and
    old diseased areas. Get two metal hog panels and put them in a circle. Put 5 of the
    quickest feeders in one pen. Each time you feed them milk pull the pen across for
    fresh grass. Put a pail of fresh water and some kelp free choice in the pen.
    This method will avoid scours, internal parasites and pink eye.
    No bedding required. The better job you do with grazing the grass no grain required.
    Stay over a 30 day rotation on the grass to avoid parasites.
    Graze on,
    Alan D. Henning

    Hey there, just a quick comment if you keep on nursing the baby calves, the water should not be given through a nipple, but from a bucket/ through. The milk should be slow fed to be able to go to the abomasum, while water is needed in the rumen to help digest concentrated feed and hay (roughage, in general). Like in nature, a calf will suck on the mother for the milk, but will drink from the puddle for the water. Cheers, Taya

  • @milkbar3720

    Hi Isaac, nice job! We saw your video and thought we could help you with a couple of your questions :) 1. Teat height. It's really important for the calf that the nipple is around 24 inches or knee height. This allows the calf to get the correct neck bend so the milk avoids going the wrong way. 2. Cleaning. Milk Bar nipples are a natural rubber, the same as milking liners. You need to use an alkali detergent. This strips the milk fat and protein from the rubber to made it last longer. 3. I know its tempting but avoid feeding water from a nipple! When a calf drinks water from a nipple the water is directed to the abomasum but water needs to finish up in the rumen. Simple rule, keep as close to nature as you can, milk from a nipple, water from a bucket. Pop over to our website and we have cleaning videos, height videos and other interesting calf rearing info www.milkbareurope.com

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  5 років тому

      Thanks for the tips! I ended up figuring out a good height for them and I think it was close to 24-28 inches. And I’ll have to get some of that detergent you mentioned because I was struggling to get all of the milk fat off. I will say, the Milk Bar is an excellent product! I’ll definitely be using them again if I ever get some more bottle calves. Thanks for the help!

    • @milkbar3720
      @milkbar3720 5 років тому

      A pleasure! If your having trouble finding an alkali then you can use Dishwasher Granules. This is an alkali and will help :) One last thing, make sure you replace the Milk Bar Teats before the next batch of calves. The reason the calves love the teat is because they drink at the same speed as they would from a cow. As the teat gets older it gets soft and will start to feed them too fast. The first sign they are drinking to fast is that they will suck each other after feeding. This is called cross suckling and causes problems. Switch the old teats out with new and you are away with happy, healthy calves again!

    • @gregausit
      @gregausit 5 років тому

      Yeah, was gonna say, do not put water in there with a milk feed, it may cause probs as will dilute the milk as well. Most milks explain exactly what to do, but no one seems to follow then they wonder why animals drop dead often at feeding, a number of people have drowned or caused milk to go into lungs on sheep near me...see comment above about height of bar, it needs to mimic mum pretty much, not be at our convenience so much....
      milk bar , I think that unit would work better as 2 5's or a 6 x 2 ? Or has it been shown that closer together works better ?

    • @milkbar3720
      @milkbar3720 5 років тому

      @@gregausit Hi Greg! We do have options for all sizes and configurations. The important thing is to allow room for the shoulders as the calves grow. To allow the calves to fan out as they grow we have placed the nipples on as much of a curve as possible. If you have nipples in a straight line they need to be really spaced out, almost a foot apart, but on a curve the space can be smaller. It's easier to use one unit per group of calves, if you use multiple then it makes filling a tricky business as they all rush to the first feeder! As long as they have a nipple, calves are really happy being close together as they feed :)

    We've done this Alot,,, the only problem is you don't know exactly how much each calf has drunk,,, you have a rough idea,,,, we went back to single 2 litre buckets hanging in front of each calf,,, it is slower than group feeding,, but it's Alot more accurate... Great video,, 👌👌👌

    just a little tip that saves you a lot of time and money, from one who been doing with out any bottles for over 37 years, takes just one or 2 feedings maybe 4 on the small ones but they too some times supersize you, take very little time feeding, much less then even having to wash all them bottles after every feeding and in just a few feedings they are all off fully drinking and eating a little calf starter with there milk on there own from one big open feed tray,, check me out, i am sure you will learn and in a few days asking your self, what have i been doing all this time,,, :)edit i herd you say grain,, save your self problem and use 16% med calf starter and add a cup to there 3 Lt. starting pail then to there bulk open feeder.. dont use grain, med calf started is a mix of fine and cores very soft and sweet tasting,, problem with the person you pointed out he never shows the not so good things that happen, only the joys
