Hard to fatten Holsteins on grass. Best way we've found is on a self feeder with cornstalks for roughage we average about 14 months from newborn calf to 1500 lb slaughter weight.

Don't try to Breed, as you said you don't have the time. But that has never been the way to build a herd anyway, not the fast way. You don't want any females at all. The grow to slow, mothers giving milk are having there weight sucked right off of them for the calves, they sacrifice themselves. Sacrifice is loss. You want ever cow growing rapidly. Also, you dont need 14 million for land. Someone else has already paid that expense. You need permission to graze at a % of the herd at auction. Free rent til you get paid, every year. Then you buy dairy bull feeder calves at 25-40 a piece, which is easy. You wean for 5-6 weeks on milk replacer or goats milk. A trick is to go to a medium sized dairy and ask do they have any milkers on antibodies, if they do they still have to milk them but they cant sell the milk so they dump it. This is fantastic milk with a bit of extra medical value for your feeder calves. Once they hit 6 weeks you turn them out into pasture, if you found someone with enough land to lease to you then finish them off. The money from your first herd will allow you to decide if you wish to keep the model, or go ahead and buy those pretty black angus bottle calves, rinse and repeat, use profits to buy more calves than before. If tight on room find another lease and double it up. You can make a substantial herd, on the cheap, in short order. Ignore losses to death and sickness, at those rates just consider it cheap veil. Hope that helps.

u migth want to check the hydroponic green pasture. it multiplies the weigth of food of grain. almost by 7. i use corn. down here at the south mexico during the dry season. it only takes from 7 to 14 days. and to complement i use mono-salt blocks so the cows can lick the mineral they really need. im getting 380 to 540 kg final weigth on the cows after 1 year.
nice. my grandpas cows were sold very cheaply also, most of the bidders had left so the cows were sold at $ 1.00 per pound times their weight, and a couple of them were broken off from the rest but all of them were sold.
We sold early in the year, before the drought hit. The past few summers have been drought with little rain. Pasture grass is dead only weeds. Thinking about not even getting calves to start raising until the weather cycle changes.

You've got it made because of all the info/advice your dad gives you about raising calves, cutting costs, etc and I don't know if your calves graze for nothing on your family's property, or if you have access to haymaking equip, etc which saves alot. It's too bad you lose about $150 in weight waiting for the sale to happen. I couldn't understand a thing that auctioneer was saying. :) Anyway, live &learn; this business and way of life is in your blood.
Nice to see a productive young man. What state are you in? I raised many bottle calves. Cattle prices are crap now especially anything not Angus. Have you heard of jump start feed? My barn weighs soon as they get off the trailer and graded.
WOW! It wouldnt even be worth it at all if they only brought that much. I think the lowest I saw sell brought 71 cents! Hope the market improves for you!

Well in this case every farmer in Southwest Missouri, Kansas, and parts of Oklahoma were selling a lot of animals. Some even had to sell their whole herd. The drought caused basically no hay to be made and hay was selling for $100 a round bale. So most people chose to sell cows vs lose money buying hay. And because hay was so high, buyers weren’t willing to pay much for calves because they would make a profit otherwise. The drought just forced a lot of people to sell animals and people didn’t have hay so there weren’t many buyers. Hope that answered it! Have a good one!
PAdairyfarming , I know! Last week they brought upper 70s and low 80s. But they just happened to come up just in time for me! Hope prices improve in your area. It’s hard to keep doing it when prices are that low.

If they are 10 months old shouldn’t they be about 800 lbs? I have finished a Holstein angus cross in 12 months and weighed 1200 lbs. .93 per lb isn’t bad.
I was hoping to get them to about 700lbs at 10 months. And they should have at least weighed that much. I was hoping to grassfeed them for the most part with just about 5lbs of grain per day. But since we had a drought and no grass for them to hardly eat, they did not put on the weight I was hoping for. Next year im hoping my angusxholsteins will average at least 750 or 800 mostly on pasture with a little grain supplement.
Phil Bindel that just happened to be at Springfield. We have found that Holsteins tend to sell better at Springfield than Joplin. They are both quite a drive for us so I’d rather take them to the higher market.
Why do you keep avoiding answering questions? People have asked what State you live in and what/where is the barn your selling at? I wouldn’t think this would be an issue, no one is going to move in on ‘your territory’

I'm planning to do Shipping livestock export to overseas markets. prices much higher . if u r interested in such business ,we can make team work partners . i just need some Logistc requirements like small farm and local vet.clinic to prepare calves for shipping.

Yes those were the price “live weight”. They normally don’t sell by the carcass lb unless selling direct to butcher.

They separated them out by weight. So the first 9 were close to 550lbs and the one they sold separately was only 430 lbs.
