  • Nearly 200 parachutists leapt from vintage C-47 Dakota planes this morning (top) during the commemorative jump over Carentan on the Normandy coast of France ahead of the 75th D-Day anniversary tomorrow. They jumped from the C-47 transporters in Second World War colours and other aircraft, aiming for fields of wild flowers on the edge of the town, in one of the early objectives for Allied troops who invaded from the air and sea. Today, thousands of veterans will join a service in remembrance of the landings in Normandy. Meanwhile, US Army Rangers climbed the jagged cliffs of Normandy's Pointe du Hoc today (bottom left) to honour the men who scaled them 75 years ago in a valiant D-Day assault. Also pictured (bottom right): A British Second World War D-Day veteran takes pictures during a ceremony today near Pegasus Bridge in Ranville, France.

One of the planes to carry the parachutes with cockpit Id letters "CD" is "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber", a C-47B built in 1943. It was flown from Paso Robles California making whistle stops along the way over a months time. It flew to Duxford England, coming by way of the Greenland route. The aircraft is part of the Estrella Warbirds Museum collection here in Paso Robles California. This aircraft's last U.S. missions were flying the Berlin airlift, it was sold to Israel and was later purchased back from the Israeli Air Force and refurbished, there is an Israeli language sign painted on the interior that roughly says, "The only replacement for a Dakota, is another Dakota". The plane was a military transport it's whole life and never converted for civilian us. It still has all of it's original equipment for paratroopers to include that used for towing combat gliders.
