- When we think of Catherine of Aragon, we think of a pious and dignified queen-but did you know that, before she even married Henry VIII, she was at the centre of a royal scandal?
Her confessor, Fray Diego Fernández, became more than just her spiritual advisor.
His influence over her raised eyebrows, sparked gossip, and even angered kings.
Was Catherine blindly loyal, or was there more to their relationship than meets the eye?
This is a fascinating and rarely told chapter in Catherine’s life-one that shaped her future in the treacherous world of Tudor politics.
Watch now to uncover the full story!

This guy sounds like Catherine’s version of Rasputin! Poor Catherine, she never would have needed him if she wasn’t being treated so poorly by Henry VII… We really do need a decent movie about this extraordinary lady! Certainly not another one of these trashy ‘historical fiction’ movies (which are little more than poorly written fanfiction), but an honest-to-goodness Historical drama. Queen Catherine was such an amazing woman, and her life was filled with so many ups and downs, that no embellishments are needed to tell her true story. Alas! These days too many writers and movie producers have forgotten that ‘truth is stranger than fiction’…. Still, one can dream! 🌼👑
Yes, he just happened to be there when she needed someone and I think she developed a bit of a crush on him.
I'd love a drama too, which looks at her whole life.
So many things written & dramatized about the other wives( particularly Anne Boleyn)......but we need a full biography on Catherine of Aragon. She was queen of England for longer than the other 5 wives in total( even including the gaps between wives). She was a woman who bore 6-10 children, though only one survived infancy.
She was an effective Regent -leading as monarch in her husband's absence. She did this all without ever losing her devotion to God
What would have happened had little Henry IX not died as an infant. What if her previous son( born prematurely at 8 months gestation) had lived had she not had to rally an army to save her husband's throne with the Battle of Flodden.
What if she had Mary a few years earlier, so that Mary would have been married off before Catherine was set aside - Catherine's grandson might have ruled.
So many ifs, & so many amazing things we know of this great woman. Yes, we need a full, truebio-pic on her.
@ladyagnes7781 there are some excellent biographies of Catherine - Garret Mattingly, Giles Tremlett, Amy Licence, Julia Fox (joint one on Catherine and Juana), Patrick Williams...
@@anneboleynfiles thanks for this info, I’ll check them out! 🌼
@@ladyagnes7781Exactly! She ready did outshine all the others!
I had never heard of this. Thank you for this information.
It's an interesting story, isn't it?
@anneboleynfiles Yes. It certainly is interesting.
@@shawnnewell4541 It was new to me too.
I think Catherine's father is to blame. He really abandoned her instead of sending someone as she requested .
And Henry VII treated her badly too.
This is something I've never heard of. Makes her just a little more human. She is always portrayed as if she was indomitable from the moment she was born. These years had to be unimaginably hard for her.
Yes, it's interesting to get a little more insight into her life, isn't it? She must have felt so very alone.
Another sad story about Catherine. Thank you for this video! I didn’t know about this chapter of her life. I don’t think there was any impropriety on her part. He probably just took advantage of her youth, vulnerability, loyalty, and her piety.
I was aware that Catherine was in limbo after the death of Arthur, and that she lived in poverty (having to wear the same dress(?), and pay for her own servants. I am still astonished that she was treated so poorly and neglected by her father and Henry VII. I also recall there was controversy around Fray Diego, but I had no idea of the extent of his influence over Catherine. It's disturbing how he abused his position and took advantage of Catherine when she was vulnerable with no concern for her reputation. Couldn't Henry VII or the Spanish ambassadors have had him removed without Catherine's consent?
She was definitely in the middle of two arguing kings.
Yes, I'm sure he could have been removed without her consent.
Sounds like she had a crush on him and he was exploiting it for all it was worth.
I agree
Yes!
Thank you, I had never heard of him, it's always a great feeling to learn something new about a subject you've watched numerous about 😊 Regarding his hold over Catherine, as a subscriber said, it's obvious that she had a crush on him and he milked the situation to the last drop!! It's very interesting how the ambassador advised to replace that man by an older confessor, gentler 😁 It's amazing the power some people hold over someone who's besotted or fascinated by them! That power reminds me a bit of the one Lord Darnley held over Elizabeth I. They push and push the boundaries, comfortable in their own right bc of their confidence, arrogance, up until "the last straw" that help get rid of them 😉 You'd think such strong women wouldn't be so easily manipulated, so blind to their faults, yet when the heart speaks it seems that Reason and rationality prefer taking some time off 😅
I do think it's quite normal for a young woman to develop a crush or over-reliance on a man that is close to her at a tough time, like a teacher, church leader, counsellor etc.
Her Father didn’t want her back again 😳 How must that have felt?
She was a great supportive wife for many years until her husband, the king betrayed her.
I love to read about those times, but as a woman I would have hated living in those times.
Yes, she wasn't treated well by the men in her life!
Who has? Excuse my view.
She had some really rubbish men in her life.
@marroosh yes!
Very enlightening 😊 Thank you ❤
If Henry the seventh had given her the security that she needed, she would not have depended on the other man. I think it was more his mistake than hers.
Yes, she was very let down by the two kings.
Love this💗
Thank you!
@ very welcome!
It's too bad she didn't find a confessor who would not have taken advantage of her vulnerability in the way Fray Diego did. It is certain that she need someone to confide in at the time, isolated as she was.
Yes, she was very alone at that time.
She was lonely 😢
Yes.
I find the whole episode emblematic of her character: she was going to do what she thought was right, no matter how harmful it was to everyone else & especially herself. (I had heard about this, but I did not know that it lasted even after her marriage, or that the priest was that much of a scumbag)
Yes, she was a principled lady and stuck to those, would not be moved.
I think it was a simple case of Catherine fancying the pants off this young, good-looking priest when she was lonely and homesick. Here was a handsome man who gave her attention, spoke her native language, and probably made her laugh! Of course, nothing sordid happened it was an innocent crush and nothing more, but I liked the idea that she was being a rebellious teenager and not listening to her elders! I'm glad Catherine had some fun before she married Narcissist Henry!
She must have been very lonely and frightened. It sounds like she chose to be around a man who was learned and interesting as well as a religious confidant.
Yes, she definitely needed someone to lean on.
SHE WAS STILL RESPECTED AS THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND. PRINCE HENRY HAD NO REASON TO GET RID OF HER. NONE.
When he broke off the betrothal, he was really just following his father's orders. Do you mean later, when he was king?
I used to feel sorry for Katherine. After this, I don’t.
