"Yea, though I walk through death's dark vale,
yet will I fear none ill;
for thou art with me, and thy rod
and staff me comfort still".
How familiar we are with these words!
All of my recordings are inspired by recent performances, weddings and funerals so they are, anonymously, dedicated to those I have played for in my work as an organist.
If you enjoyed this, please subscribe to hear more of my weekly recordings. I am determined to upload every week to share the sounds of this historic instrument and the wonderful acoustic of St Martin's.

If you're local and would like me to play for a service please email ben.maton@hotmail.co.uk.
I have never seen an organist as deeply involved with playing the instrument. His entire body feels each note and gives each one special meaning with his expressions. Thank you, Ben. I admire you very much.
Episodes like this with just a hymn , you inspire me . All your shows . I turned singer cause my ambition of playing an organ period, failed , . The way my dad worked , practice was impossible . .So Iuse my gift God gave , to sing and praise His name ...
What a fantastic piece to hear playing with such gusto. My dear mum Joyce’s favoured hymn. A hymn I will certainly ask my in-laws to play at my passing.
1
The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want;
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.
2
My soul He doth restore again,
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E’en for His own name’s sake.
3
Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me, and Thy rod
And staff me comfort still.
4
My table Thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.
5
Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me,
And in God’s house forevermore
My dwelling-place shall be.
Crimond is a small town / village outside Fraserburgh . At my wife’s funeral we had a precentor from the local free church lead the unaccompanied singing of the 23rd psalm.
I was amazed how the congregation followed the precentor , instinctively, knowing where to swell and synchronise the words with the rhythm of the precentor. In my formative years in Aberdeenshire it was common for the 23rd psalm to be sung at the graveside .it felt as if the words and music had entered into the rural Scottish psyche. In those days I’ve heard it referred to as the Scottish national anthem.
Absolutely beautiful. Excellent playing and rendition of this well-loved hymn.
Played beautifully ben 👍 Thankyou in 2024 that organ you play sounds amazing 😉.
Oh yes! The hair and beard are perfect. Thanks for both the auditory and visual feast.

Nice rehamonization on the third verse.
Oh, So BEAUTIFUL< I Love it
Beautiful playing, very well crafted. Bravo! 👏👏👏
Yes, I like the Hobbit look. Friends have been calling me a Hobbit for about half a century, although I think my toes have no more hair. As for this tune for Ps23, absolutely yes! I have written notes in my Prayer Book for the hymns at my funeral, and the Gospel and Epistle will be whatever the Lectionary says, but this Psalm ,to this tune, will be a comfort to many in my family. When my son went away to University, every morning I got up, missing him, and cooked my oatmeal in the microwave, which hummed the first two notes of this tune. I missed him so much, but the Psalm was a solid comfort.
beautiful hymn. Praise the God
Excellent: the Scottish Psalter 1650

Scottish Psalter of 1650
In fact, most Christians worldwide are familiar with the words of this psalm, even know them by heart. And Psalm 23 is certainly one of the best-known and most popular texts in the Bible. -
Your rendition here is excellent. It made me sing along
I find I sing along with Ben when he plays familiar hymns as well. In fact, it would be wonderful if he accompanied me. ;)
So very nice, so edifying...sweet to the soul! Thank you and please keep these coming.

Wow just wonderful
Beautifully played! That organ has some terrific reeds in the pedal. Also, I like long-haired Ben.
Rather nice video. I enjoyed while listening your play. May God bless you and your service. I hope that the prince William would find the meaningful essence of christianity ⚜️✝️⚜️ by watching your videos. ☺️
Do you ever play the Goodall version of Psalm 23?
I am gladly paying this talented organist for playing so beautifully.
Bravo!
