Once you buy your Tesla, you don't need a contactless card to open the doors. It detects your phone as you approach and unlocks. The regenerative braking takes about a day to get used to but when you take your foot off the accelerator, yes the brake lights do come on.

As someone who started driving at the end of the 1970’s when cars were rusty, slow and unreliable, BUT could be mended and kept running with a few tools and a bit of common sense, we could drive, we could open our own doors, stay on the road by using our skills, drift the back end, change a flat tyre fix an exhaust with gum gum and a coat hanger.
I would love to go back to the cars of the 1970’s again and regain the shear enjoyment of driving and the simplicity of cars which made life so good. Back then we knew how to look after ourselves without all these so called driver aids, or government controls as we call them.

Thanks for a great video. Really interesting stuff. The scary amount of connectivity with an obscure HQ is worrying. I have noticed that Tesla drivers are often looking anywhere but the road, now I know why. As you say, those tablet displays should be illegal or inoperable while on the move, and basic controls like fan, door opening etc. should be manually done.

@@djtaylorutube if you need to navigate menus to change anything while driving that's got to be the same or worse than using a phone. @@johnlladron735 Set climate to auto, i've hardly touched it in the last year and if the passenger wants something different, they can do it themselves! :)
This is my question though and it's what is it that is expected to be changed? I don't need to navigate menus while driving, there's nothing to do. Specific examples of something would be helpful and i'll try to explain the options available.
Arguably it's not cheaper to have manual parts and buttons, they have a design cost, a manufacturing cost, shipping cost, inventory cost, stock management cost. If you've not watched Sandy Munro's breakdown of vehicles, they're quite a good perspective on this. Looking at something like the Ioniq centre console alone is absolutely nuts.

Door handles (exterior) are so easy - use the thumb to press the right side, and the other fingers to pull the handle. The 'emergency' indoor handles don't slightly lower the windows to avoid glass/rubber damage. Remember how it beeped when you used it, if you had looked at the screen, it would have warned about its use. While you're driving, most of the things you might need to change (climate control, navigation) are easily changed by voice control. As regards the key card, haven't used mine in ages, the phone app (which you wouldn't have) unlocks the car via bluetooth when you're close enough, so just walk up and open the door (see first comment)

My Honda Jazz has features you've talked about. I press a button on the steering wheel where my thumb is naturally placed and the output is directly in front of me. The screen thing puzzles me too. I can't legitimately turn my Google map off while driving yet you can mess with a screen to do internal temperature legally. Good on you for giving it a go. A couple of points:
The brakes do light up when you take your foot off the gas if your slowing down down at a pace similar to a car breaking. Atnight you can see the brake lights lighting up but not during the day. Unlike other EVs, it can't be disabled, but you get used to it.
    2) the electric door button drops the window below the seal before it releases the door latch, this is to stop the seal getting worn. The energy release, whuch scts like a traditional lever doesn't drop the window, so Tesla don't recommend using it. For the door handles use your thumb to press the outer door lever open and then use your fingers on the lever.
    4) You link your phone's Bluetooth to use as a key, it unlocks as you open the door and locks when you walk away.
Like you say, there's a lot to learn, but that applies to most modern cars.

My 2016 BMW 330 will cost me £520 with 12 years NCD. A long range Model 3 is (cheapest) £1425 with the same details. To make it worse just last month I was getting quotes of about £1100. So that’s a 20+% increase in quotes in a single month 😳.
Even if I had free electricity all year round the BMW would still be cheaper to run. Then there is the current depreciation of EV’s BECAUSE of insurance situation.
Seen a Model 3 on AutoTrader up for sale since October and has had about 4k worth of price cuts. Obvious that the insurance trend is causing havoc in the used market.

I'm in Australia. About 12 months ago, I ran the costs on a Model 3 Long Range. Yes, the insurance was expensive. But the biggest problem here is resale value.
The depreciation is not only frightening, some of the used model 3's available had been advertised for months, with several having being advertised for over 6 months!
The other troubling issue that I found was just how many ultra low mileage vehicles were up for sale. Why?

    • @15bit62

@@davidbrayshaw3529 Depreciation is very region specific i have noticed. I grew up in the UK, where depreciation on a typical car is around 50% in 3 years. Now i live in Norway, where the typical depreciation is 50% in 5 years. That's a very different number. With specific reference to my Model 3, looking at the used prices here i would estimate that it is still worth about 70% of what i paid for it 3 years ago. That reflects a market where company cars are not so prominent, and EVs are the norm rather than the exception.

Hi Geoff, absolutely agree with "too much technology", which most, if not all of us, will never fully utilise. However, much more relevant is the distraction while driving with a touch screen. You're absolutely spot-on with; what's the difference between that and a mobile phone! If I had the time and inclination, I'd count how many times you took your eyes off the road looking at the screen to your left.
The whole motor industry needs to address vehicle control ergonomics, if we're to drive safely to the best of our ability.
It's "eaten the range up" because you've got the lights and the heated seats on. So, apart from not accelerating too fast, you shouldn't drive at night or in the cold weather. Great these EV's aren't they? Can't wait to be forced to get one.

      @TB-up4xi 5 місяців тому +1

No child-mined cobalt is used in any Tesla and the LFP batteries don't use any at cobalt at all. Refining of petrol and diesel only uses a fraction of the amount used in batteries, it's a catalyst and most of it is recaptured from the recation - the vast majority of child-mined cobalt is used in mobile device batteries (phones and laptops).

Use voice commands to easily control settings and preferences without using the touchscreen. Voice commands are designed to understand natural requests.
    Use them to:
    Adjust climate preferences.
Tweak the windshield wiper speed and frequency.
Control various aspects of your vehicle.
    Navigate to a location.
    Call a contact.
    Interact with apps and settings.
To initiate a voice command, fully press the microphone button on the right side of the steering wheel. When a chime sounds, make your request, then Model 3 provides onscreen responses.

What we need to remember is these vehicles are going to be the potential basis for Mars (same with Elon's rockets, brain-tech, AI etc). Not earth. That's why they're weirdly not compatible with the roads designed for ICE vehicles. It seems Elon doesn't want to listen to the petrol heads for the simplicity is that he likes to engineer with 1st principles (that includes deleting things). Although I reckon Tesla might be forced to build ICE cars in the future if EVs get pushed out of the market. Or they remain the only EV car maker alongside niche EV makers.

EV range is everything currently and less bumps on the overall form = more range. the wheels also add to the equation, different size and make-up (normal/winter tires) also affect the range

Thanks for a great video Geoff. What strikes me about the Tesla is how complicated it is so there's a lot that can go wrong, plus it seems like you have to learn to drive in a completely different way than normal. Does the speed you drive at affect your range I wonder? I'll stick to my petrol car as it's much less complicated and I have a proper key for it. 😀

Hahaha, that was the best video you’ve produced to date…….you really struggled to find faults! By the way, the brake lights do come on when you decelerate and the one pedal driving gives you total control when you get used to it, stops brake wear and charges the battery too!
However, the technology is a lot to take on so quickly for an ‘old boy’ haha.

    • @gimble447
      @gimble447 5 місяців тому

@@andypicken7848 I’m led to believe that regen is more abrupt than down shifting unless they possibly skip 2 or more gears and if that’s done at a high enough speed to cause rapid deceleration ( ie comparable to regen braking) would obviously cause damage to the vehicle. Modern driving practice is not to use gears at all for reducing speed due to recent decades seeing vast improvements in brake efficiency “ brakes to slow, gears to go” but I understand there are many drivers out there who don’t do that. But like I said I don’t think it’s really comparable to most electrics with regen, I do see your logic though but it’s really not in the same sphere in my “own” opinion bud. Also in your comment you said that you “ see it as an extension of not having to change gears” again if we compare that to an automatic combustion engines car , they will slow very gradually compared to a regen electric auto, needing brakes more which in turn gives a signal, as opposed to what you like about needing, by your own words, to use brakes less, which is exactly my point I was making and responding to :)

I followed my neighbour for about 12 km a while back. He was in his Tesla, the road was 80 km limit and his brake lights kept coming on. So I would back off a little bit and the car behind me would back off and so on all down the line. Very annoying and potentially quite unsafe. I caught up with him a couple of days later and mentioned to him that I think he’s unconsciously resting his left foot on the brake pedal. He then explained the regenerative braking thing to me and that he really hated that function. So the brake lights do come on with regenerative braking, I would never have known that.
