More Than This, Same Old Scene, Love is the Drug, Oh Yeah!, Slave to Love, Jealous Guy... just the tip of the iceberg.
This whole album, Avalon, is a vibe unto itself. Recognized for years as one of the best 'make out" albums ever. With those sounds, that sax amd Bryan's voice it is easy to see why.
Slave to Love is a Bryan Ferry solo song.
I can attest to the “make out” potential of this album! 🙄😏. And here I thought it was just us. 😉
@@79BlackRose Yes it is. Still on the list... it is a very good song.
Hi Scott! I added your suggestions to my list. Ah, a makeout album, I can see that. Really nice chill grooves here...thanks for watching!
🤭
Hello Brandon! Avalon is a beautiful and haunting song. Roxy has an amazing group of talented musicians.
Good evening Pommie!! Really pleased with their sound. Guess I've just dug my millionth rabbit hole LOL....Thanks for tuning in 🙂
Oo yeah! Gotta do "To Turn You On" from Avalon.
On with the show, this is it...enjoy!
Hi there! Thanks for being first on this one 🥇 Really enjoyed this band, I will add TTYO to the list!
@@retroreactions.... You won't be disappointed, I guarantee. Best on album, imo, plus very seductive. Very NYC in the rain with your new lover kinda song.
Next level artists. SOS, Love is the Drug or a Dylan cover or two (done brilliantly). Bryan is legend.
Hi Dawn! Thanks for the late night watch 🙂 Glad you love. I will add your votes for SOS and LITD.
Love this Roxy Music album and songs!
Great! Thanks for tuning in..
Many babies were born 9 months after couples discovered this album.
Ha nice...would be proud to call myself a Roxy baby!
Avalon is an excellent album, “More Than This” is really good. You should also check out the big hit they had from 1975 - “Love is the Drug”; more upbeat and funky!
They’ve always given me a European club vibe.
Thanks Dave. Added your votes for those 2 songs. Appreciate you stopping by as always!
More Than This is fantastic. Been in so many movies. ❤❤
Vote added!
@@retroreactions.... I hope to see more votes for Virginia Plain with Brian Eno going insane on an early synth! 😂🎶
My "Take 1 album to the island" album! And side B track 1 "Main Thing" is "The one"!
Avalon - original chill... that voice and sax !
Really great discovery for me today, thanks!
This whole album is lovely. When my husband and I were just beginning to be a couple, we played this cassette in the car constantly. We couldn’t get enough of it. I would suggest you do the whole album…it’s SUCH a vibe!
Hello! I cheated and saw months ago that you loved this album! 😁 Great memories for you no doubt. Ah, this rabbit hole life I'm living haha....
Then they must have made "Oh Yeah" (from the previous album "Flesh + Blood") specially for you! The song describes exactly your experience: "There's a band playing on the radio with the rhythm of rhyming guitars..."
Great band man! I am surprised Bryan Ferry (solo) and Roxy Music passed you by Brandon.
Bryan Ferry invited David Gilmour to be in his band for his performance at Live Aid in 1985!
I agree! Not sure why, I do know of course Ferry's Slave to Love and Don't Stop the Dance from the radio. Awesome vibes there as well. Oh wow, so Gilmour was in Live Aid? Been meaning to react to some Live Aid performances, as no reactor does for some reason (other than Queen of course)..
@@retroreactions.... They are both fantastic song from the Boys and Girls album. Many of the album tracks are of the same high quality. My favourite Roxy Music song is Love is the Drug. It has a totally different vibe to the 80s songs. If you want Roxy Music featuring synths, go with Virginia Plain. That is another banger! 💥
I only recently found out that LITD is the song that Depeche Mode's lead singer is singing in 1 of their old concert films. Yet I still haven't listened to the original! Will add your vote for that and VP to the list..
@@retroreactions...., you can count one more vote for "Virginia Plain". It's so unusual in many ways, yet it's so delightful to listen!
Done!
Great music from Bryan Ferry and the rest in Roxy Music. Roxy Music was played a lot at the car stereo at that time going on the road trips.
Thanks!
Avalon is a sublime work of art.
Ferry is always so millimetric in every production, I'm always left breathless.
Roxy Music goes way back to the early 70's ....check out 'Love is the Drug' I believe that was their first big hit !
In fact, their first three singles released in 1972 and 1973 were all big hits reaching the UK top ten.
Adding your vote, thanks!
ROXY MUSIC sold over 5,891,080 albums, including 1,000,000 in the United States and 3,380,000 in the United Kingdom. Roxy Music are an English rock band formed in 1970 by lead vocalist and principal songwriter Bryan Ferry and bassist Graham Simpson. By the time the band recorded their first album in 1972, Ferry and Simpson were joined by saxophonist and oboist Andy Mackay, guitarist Phil Manzanera, drummer Paul Thompson and synthesizer player Brian Eno. Other members over the years include keyboardist and violinist Eddie Jobson and bassist John Gustafson. The band split in 1976, reformed in 1978 and split again in 1983. In 2001, Ferry, Mackay, Manzanera and Thompson reunited for a concert tour and have toured together intermittently ever since, most recently in 2022 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first album. Ferry has also frequently enlisted band members as backing musicians during his solo career. Peace out
Nice, thanks for all that great and educational info. Can't wait to hear more from this great band! Thanks for watching..
Bryan Ferry would continue and expand upon this vibe into his solo career with the song "Slave To Love". A dreamy and exotic take on romance (especially the 12" version) - that unfortunately took on an unintended meaning when it was used on the soundtrack to a movie about a kinky relationship. The song deserved better.
Ah yes, I've heard Slave, great song!
Back in the UK we had a show "Desert Island Disks " The premise was "you are stranded on a desert island, you will only have 10 albums that you will ever be able to listen to" Avalon, is one of my ten.
Awesome, can't wait to hear more!
After The Beatles Roxy Music are the most influential band Britain has produced, give "Out of the Blue" or "Editions of You" a listen from their early seventies catalogue.
Wow! I will add those to my list, thanks!
So great! Awesome band ♥️
Hello Rhonda! Glad you love em! Nice seeing you here as always...🙂
@@retroreactions.... Depeche Mode! 🤗
My all time fave band since 1987, in case you didn't hear me gush during my Memento Mori reaction video, or hear my "I Want You Now" cover 😊
@@retroreactions.... 🤩👌♥️🎶
So excited to see them yet again next month (my 1st time was in 1990), and SOOO happy they have added 4 new classics to the setlist on some nights!
Roxy Music works well in the mythical genre "Yacht Rock", along with Steely Dan, Robert Palmer, modern Genesis. Prince and more... 😊
Gorgeous vocals, with musicianship off the charts, and something a bit unexpected? Must be Roxy Music. On their first two albums, you could call them glam prog(IMHO)
Yes, those smooth flowing effortless vocals! Do they go darker? Hopefully lots of keys were used throughout their discography. Thanks for watchin!
Love Roxy Music. The Super Smooth Bryan Ferry. Who has had a great Solo Career too, of course.
Interestingly for you Brandon, one of Roxy Music’s members, Phil Manzanera, also later played with David Gilmour for a number of years, performing Pink Floyd music and then working with David Gilmour on some of his Solo work. Also Manzanera co-produced David Gilmour's album ‘On an Island’. He’s back with Roxy now of course, since last year.
Going back to Roxy Music, ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘More Than This’, ‘Jealous Guy’, (By John Lennon), ‘Love Is The Drug’, ‘Angel Eyes’ and ‘Dance Away’, are my own favourites. 🎶❤️🎶
Great to hear! Yes, I heard about the Phil/David crossover... so cool! I will add your votes for those songs! Thanks
Roxy were great in all incarnations.
Phil Manzanera from Roxy also played with Dave Gilmour on solo live shows and albums (possibly AMLOR too).
Gilmour performed on Roxy singer Bryan Ferry’s solo material eg Slave to Love, and played with him at Live Aid.
Early songs when Brian Eno was with them worth a listen: Virginia Plain, Do the Strand. Later: anything from the Flesh & Blood LP. “Oh Yeah,” “8 Miles High” (a cover, along with “Midnight Hour”), and “Flesh and Blood” do it for me).
All of it lovely ❤
Loving all the crossovers! Thanks for the suggs, added them to my list...
Beautiful, atmospheric sound. Ferry's voice and instrumentals. At 45 years old, the music has held up and seems modern.
Just subscribed, like the vibe. Another one is "Take a Chance With Me".
Never reviewed on any channel. Think you'll like it.
There you go Brandon….another rabbit hole 🐇 !!! I didn’t listen to a lot of Roxy Music, but am familiar with more popular songs like “Love is the Drug”, “Dance Away” and “More Than This”. A not so familiar song that has a great vibe is “Rain, Rain, Rain” from 1980. I get an island, reggae type feel from it…. It’s a cool song.
I'm demanding free carrots at all grocery stores and restaurants at this point!! 🐰 Added your suggs to my list (which is now at least 3,500 songs lol 😬)
I do like new artist alerts. There’s a couple of new artists I’ve recommended that I’ll probably hear sooner or later. We did get back home from our little vacation. It was MUCH needed! Lol Floyd Friday…. woohoo!
Very good picks señor, Roxy has many good songs and also Bryan as solo, if you didn't listen yet, add the Lennon's "Jealous Guy" cover to your big request list, it's fantastic.
Ah, glad you like em! I changed my mind at least 3 times, so happy with which band I decided on. Added to the list 🙂
@@retroreactions.... I am very happy with your choice this morning. Maybe we almost heard Ultravox? 😉
One of these days....choosing is SO hard...I really need to clone myself!
Thank you so much for starting to explore Roxy Music. As a fan of Depeche Mode yourself, I think you’ll find a lot to enjoy with this band. They’re very talented and Brian Ferry is just an iconic singer. Some great songs you should check out like Same Old Scene, Jealous Guy, More than This and many more including some from Ferry’s solos like Slave to Love.
Your reactions are always genuine and relevant with accurate details about the music and the lyrics which make all the difference. Congratulations for a great job!
One of the best, most classy bands ever. I love their connection with Pink Floyd as well. Inter playing on each others solo albums. Both epic bands providing much food for thought
Wow, I must learn more about these crossovers! Happy I chose this band today at the last minute and thanks for watching!
@@retroreactions....Try Bryan Ferry’s Slave to Love. Gilmour on rhythm and lead guitar. Here they both are at Live Aid. ua-cam.com/video/FxXw8gZIfc4/v-deo.htmlsi=3rWalUu8VL67udkY
Muy buena Banda la escucho mucho
Gracias amigo!

Great Music!!
For sure, love the vibes! Thanks for the late night watch, hope you're staying warm...😊
I am. Thank you. Have a good night.😃💟☮
At last! 😃 Roxy Music was definitely missing from your reactions! It's a unique band that crosses over many sub-genres of rock and pop, is vaguely defined as "art rock" or "glam rock" (though I find them very different from other artists and bands included in that classification), but they tend to make "cool" music (even when there is a harder rock or dancing beat) with highly sophisticated undertones. "Sophisticated" is really the word, and in more than one sense, meaning both that they use elaborate arrangements and that it evokes an atmosphere of sophistication. Roxy Music is meant to be listened at the poshest bar in town sipping a glass of vintage wine and wearing your best designer clothes. They're definitely as CHIC as it can get. Just for a start, all band members are alumni from fine arts schools - which reflects on their album covers, not one of which is banal, though most are considered sexist by today's standards ("Country Life" had the cover censored in many countries because it features poorly covered female breasts).
And unlike most bands, which at some point get tired, lose their thing, and start making bland or frankly bad records until they eventually split or just fade away, in my opinion Roxy Music only kept getting better and better, and my three favorite records are their three final ones: "Manifesto", "Flesh + Blood", and "Avalon". Critics disagree, panning especially "Manifesto" a lot, but I think they didn't get the message ("Manifesto" was made during the disco era and features some audible disco influences, but starting from the cover - again, a work of art, made with shop-window dummies dressed for a night at the disco - it's a *caricature* of disco, they were *making fun* of it in their usual highly refined way, but apparently they were too subtle for many to get that).
But this is not to say that their previous albums were not great in their own ways, starting from the very first one, titled just with the name of the band and still featuring Brian Eno as a band member, starting his career as one of those names most common people never heard about, but musicians definitely have, and with his many groundbreaking innovations as a musician and producer (from ambient music to sampling and much more) he changed the face of popular music deeply and irreversibly. But the band was too small for two Brians, both geniuses, and Eno left after the second album, "For Your Pleasure". Along the way there was "Siren", which many consider their masterpiece album and contains their second greatest success, "Love Is the Drug", which has had countless covers, including a very famous one by diva Grace Jones. Their greatest hit ever was made in 1981, months after John Lennon's death, as a tribute to him, and it's a cover of "Jealous Guy" that many (including me) consider better than the original version.
Roxy Music only released eight studio albums in their career of just 10 years, but there's a wealth of things to discover in them, and I'm sure you'll say a lot of "this reminds me of band X or singer Y". Rest assured, though, that Roxy Music did it first and the others then reused their idea and tried to approximate their sound. They're the kind of band that makes other musicians think "this is so simple and obvious, yet so effective, why didn't I think of that first?" They're widely regarded as one of the most influential British bands of all time, and in a country that gave rise to the Beatles, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Sex Pistols, Depeche Mode, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, and so many fabulous bands of many genres, that's saying something!
As for "Avalon", I count it among my "addiction" songs, those that make me sick if I go too long without listening to them (other examples include Pink Floyd's "Echoes", the Beatles' "Hey Jude", "Here Comes the Sun", and "A Day in the Life", Camel's "Drafted", and King Crimson's "I Talk to the Wind"). Now you must watch the beautiful music video, which perfectly captures the elegance of the song. My only pet peeve is the line "when you bossa nova there's no holding", which, me being Brazilian, sounds ignorant and complete BS to me because bossa nova is meant to be just quietly listened to and has never been a dance genre (samba is, though, and it can definitely "take" you). And don't forget Bryan Ferry's delicious "Slave to Love" single, which was such a big hit back in the day that you had to be deep in a cave on Mars not to know it.
I knew you liked them! Thanks for all the history and insight per usual. Glad I was spot on with the sophistication feel I mentioned. I also love hearing that they have art backgrounds. Art was my major in college, so definitely biased there. Addiction song haha, I like that concept, never thought of it that way. Slave I've heard many times on the radio, as well as the amazing Don't Stop the Dance. Thanks bud!!
David Gilmour plays on Bryan Ferry's first solo album.Great stuff, every bit as good as Roxy!
In fact, the first time David Gilmour played on a Bryan Ferry solo album was on the sixth.
Yes, Bryan solo is on my list too...
Smooth band... Another from that era when I had fixed Ideas and 'heard but did not listen.' That intro got me thinking of Queen's 'We will Rock you!'
This is very sublime.
This song and band is amazing. If you take suggestions, I recommend a song from Landmarq called "Ta' Jiang." It contains an extremely deep and depressing story but it's a beautiful prog-rock song. Landmarq were actually one of the leading bands in the neo-prog-rock movement and were an outfit that came directly from another band important in the genre called "Quasar." It's one of my favorite tracks of all time, no matter the genre
Hi there. Thanks for watching. I've never heard of Landmarq, they sound great. Unfortunately the song you mentioned is outside the channel year window, but I can definitely listen on my own and let you know what I thought..
I enjoy the format of your reaction -- non-stop music and then delivery of the whole evaluation -- good job. thanks.
Thank you so much for watching!
"Kiss & Tell" is probably my fav.
That is a Bryan Ferry solo song.
Cool, will add it to my list under Bryan Ferry solo...thanks for stopping by!
@@retroreactions....that is a COOL song. And Slave to Love…. Youza..yo mama! 😜
Really surprised this one slipped through the cracks for 😮you, Brandon. It seems perfectly suited to your taste. One of my favorite “smooth vibe out” albums.
I do know STL from the radio...
Brandon buddy, you're playing many of my favs!! This album is so essential to one's collection. Definitely going to go through your playlists to dig for more gems! 🪷
I'm so happy to hear that you are enjoying many of my song picks! 😊
Your channel is well balanced. Thanks for all your great efforts. ✨️
Bryan Ferry has a great voice. Older Roxy Music featured Brian Eno who has famously worked with, Bowie, Talking Heads, Robert Fripp, David Byrne and more. Good choice. 😊 you
Hi Adam! Love his voice. Oh I def have heard the name Brian Eno. Was he actually in the band? Thanks for watching!
Being the concert going bum I was throughout 80s, Roxy is the one big fish I just missed. Got into them just as they were calling it quits. You'd be hard-pressed to find a lead singer more suave and sophisticated than Brian Ferry. The band and sound totally supports the image.
Ironically my two favorite songs of theirs are covers that they made their own... John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and Neil Young's hard rocker "Like a Hurricane" which they totally transformed into a Roxy Music classic. Would highly recommend you check out the live versions of both of these. Total vibes each of them. And you get to see those classy backup singers doing their thing.
Hi. Yea I should watch him in action, I'm sure he's quite the performer too! Will add to list...any specific live performance/date?

Thanks
This was thinking mans pop music from the 70s. I would probably tag it ART Rock as lounge rock sounds way too derogatory for the quality of their output. Their first big hit was ‘Virginia Plain’ 1972 and was like nothing else around at the time. They were huge in the UK for just over 10 years having a number of single hits and a series of great albums up to around 83/84. Would recommend ‘Love is the drug’, ‘In every dream home a heartache’, ‘Eight miles High’ ,’Both ends Burning’……………the list goes on……. Oh and also check out the cover of Elvis’s ‘Jealous Guy’ which they had a major hit with. Great version. Along with 10cc and ELO these guys lit up the pop/rock scene for me in the 70s providing some serious music amongst all the Glam rock and a lighter alternative to the amazing progressive albums that were being produced in the decade.
Hello and thanks for all the info and suggestions! 10CC has been on my list for a while...
@@retroreactions.... Btw Jealous Guy was written and recorded by John Lennon, not Elvis. 10cc were a fantastic band with four super talented songwriters and musicians and vocalists. They had their own recording studio and did some really off the wall and effective things in the 1970s. One of the best examples of this was "I'm Not In Love". This was one of three UK number ones, each sung by a different lead singer!
@@79BlackRose sorry Simon, you are correct, brain fade on my part!
@@scifimonkey3 No problem, it happens to me too sometimes lol.
I love I'm Not In Love. Do they have other music that sounds similar?
I bought this album back in the day for the chill sophisto-pop sound. Enjoyed it until it began to sound just too glossy and cocktail party phony for my taste. Rubs counter to my blues rock soul. An occasional listen these days still reveals its catchy side though, I must admit. Temporarily.
Hi there. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Song suggestion: Slave To Love
Band/Artist: Brian Ferry
Album: Boys and Girls
Brian's first solo effort.
His first solo effort was over ten years before this. Boys and Girls was his sixth solo album.
Thanks.. I've heard STL and Don't Stop the Dance many times though.. any other Bryan solo favorites?
bryan ferry , martha ladley
Roxy Music has always been a pretty interesting band. But there are much better albums by the band than "Avalon". Especially the first two where Brian Eno played the keyboards. “Chance Meeting”, “Do The Strand” and “The Bogus Man” are my favorites from the band. Glam rock, prog rock and pop, always with an ironic wink, were the trademarks of Roxy Music.
Hello! Glad you like this band. I added your suggestions to my list, thanks!
I prefer edgy Roxy to slower. Hey Brandon, keep going, you won't be disappointed, I promise.
Yes, based on these and Don't Stop the Dance (which I just refreshed myself on), this will be an amazing journey..
