There needs to be serious regulations placed on NIL. Calhoun announced he was staying at Utah 2 days ago. Last night a donor from another school offered way more money than what we could. That’s like tampering. Free agency is every year for this athletes. It’s madness
Not sure what can be done between universities and NIL collectives but there needs to be contracts for at least 2 years to avoid this issue of bigger money teams picking off the best players from teams with less money.
NIL and the transfer portal are absolutely destroying college football. There needs to be a limit on how many times you can transfer, as well as a cap on NIL. How do you even get excited about players coming in anymore? They could leave at the next portal opening if they want. This is getting ridiculous!
I think Utah historically just does way better with dynamic qbs like dampier. Miller moss is great but he’s like a refined Isaac Wilson. Pocket passers don’t do well at the U
I hope you’re kidding. BYU is a top Academic institution with numerous graduates who are billionaires. We can’t compete in this NIL space with those guys. Depressing times, but… GO UTES‼️
@@theoptimist9605now you know how byu felt when Utah was part of the pac-12 and had absolutely every single recruiting advantage. As a byu fan it’s nice to be on a level playing field again.
@theoptimist9605 "More like byu fans" How? Maybe like going into the youtube comment section and pretending to be a fan of our rival team. Does that idea resonate with you?
I’ve noticed a few times when you compare the NIL between BYU and Utah, you make it a blanket statement. It appears the BYU nil funds are going strictly into the MBB program. As most of it is coming from Danny Ainge and Ryan smith who seem to think it will help the Jazz. Will we fall behind in basketball while Young is there? Probably. But football wise, I do not see it as an issue.
I hope you’re kidding. BYU is a top Academic institution with numerous graduates who are billionaires. 73 millionaires are currently donating to their school. Sadly, we’re a junior college renting space to our state’s medical school. Our graduates don’t make Big money like BYU graduates. Depressing times, but…GO UTES‼️
Imagine going to college and playing a sport and getting paid good money to play college sports. This is crazy! They are making money as a college student. You can play 8 years and make a million dollars or more.
Cam Calhoun is gone. It's been reported he was offered double what Utah was offering him. He went back to Utah and Utah said it wasn't going to match. All this while he was still officially with Utah. Sounds like agents were out floating offers for him trying to increase his NIL offer for him by out bidding one school against another. It's ugly, slimly and unseemly. NCAA should come up with a new rule that when a player transfers the school has to pay a buyout of the player's NIL as a way of giving pause for players doing some of this. Everyone compares player movement to coaches, well then, let's put buyouts as part of the rules like with coaching contracts.
Doesn't surprise me about byu landing the MBB kid - Ryan Smith is pumping that NIL full of steroids, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's dropping hints about if a players goes to byu then the Jazz will look at him. BYU has the billionaire Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club owner as their main MBB booster. There's no competing.
As long as the conversation revolves exclusively around NIL, regardless of how important a factor it is, it'll miss an important point. Almost all of BYU's MBB staff is from the NBA. Kevin Young literally had Chris Paul call AJ to let him know what a good coach he is. BYU's NIL philosophy has definitely evolved, and the donor base is big enough to match any other university in the country, and the importance of that shouldn't be understated. But it's a mistake to assume that money is the only thing that matters. Players want to get paid, but they also want to be developed as athletes, win, and get drafted.
As a BYU fan just here to enjoy JTs take, im not sure why Dampier feels like such a win. Kid put up big numbers on a bad NM team. Not sure why but he feels like a good get.
As a Utah fan, I kind of understand what you're saying. But you got to realize Utah doesn't need someone who's really good. We just need someone who's competent cuz if we get a competent offense going then we basically have what we had at 21 and 22. Utah will most likely still have a fantastic defense when you pair Utah's fantastic defense and special teams up with competent offense. That was exactly our team makeup when we won the two conference championships in a row.
@connornielsen6790 I think BYU and Utah fans can relate. It feels like BYUs offense prevented them from reaching their peak this season. And that was certainly the case for Utah.
If Utah does get Dampier let's not forget he's one injury away from playing. I hope not, but we need to get 1 or 2 QBs to go behind him. The QB coach has got his work cut out for him.
I think that BYU is going to have some unique optics issues with NIL money. Did AJ just become the highest paid employee of the LDS Church? How is alumni donating millions to fund recruits going to sit with LDS church members who still volunteer to clean ward buildings to avoid janitorial costs? I have always respected BYU's "working-class" sort of frugal ambience as a religious institution. This sort of money, however, is more extravagant than they typically exhibit. Seems out of character. This will be interesting to see how this sits with LDS Church 'higher-ups' who I think are more interested in BYU preparing LDS kids to do good in the world, rather than run a farm-league sports endeavor.
DEPRESSING‼️ Sadly, BYU is a REAL University with high academic standards and many wealthy billionaire graduates. We’re basically just a junior college that provides land to our states medical school. That is why we don’t have ANY money. Depressing, but 💯 percent true….Anyway, GO UTES‼️
You think Utah can win the Big 12 if we get Dampier? I just wonder where your delusion comes from sometimes. Have you done critical analysis on what the other Big 12 teams will be running back with? No wonder the whole conference thinks we’re arrogant. Prior to this season you were saying we were tops in all position groups, and look how that turned out! Not to mention the whole team is jumping ship.
Yes because everyone predicted BYU to be a contender with a Riverside City College Transfer or ASU who was picked to finish dead last. Utah is still really good at several positions and the right QB can make a huge difference.
Not sure what can be done between universities and NIL collectives but there needs to be contracts for at least 2 years to avoid this issue of bigger money teams picking off the best players from teams with less money.

I think there should be a 2 year contract signed when utilizing transfer portals. Then If that is breached a player gives up 1 year of eligibility
As a BYU fan, I agree the portal is out of control.
If we are unable to land a QB from a really bad G5 program, we are in serious problems.
Not sure what can be done between universities and NIL collectives but there needs to be contracts for at least 2 years to avoid this issue of bigger money teams picking off the best players from teams with less money.
agreed. If a player wants to break out of that 2 year deal, they give up 1 year of eligibility.

schools and NCAA have exploited athletes for years. same for AAU in track. nice to see athletes getting the treatment they have earned .
Now that NIL is legit BYU has the upper hand on Utah. Utah always had the upper hand the last 15 plus years on BYU with the conference disparity.
Damnit Utah pay Calhoun to stay and Ryan. Get some big SEC Guards, some good receivers and RB's of course some QB's.
You pitching in, Zach?
Are there any ways to bring in something like a salary cap for college football and a threshhold number to access the transfer portal?
They said AJ signed with BYU 3 weeks ago... Makes me wonder if some of the rivaly outrage was they new deep down that AJ was signing with BYU?
Utah gonna win the national championship next year. Also gonna get that cold fusion thing figured out.
LoL hahaha hehehe! And Utah was going to dominate the big 12! National champion!? You are a comedian! Utah is not going to win the big 12 either!
And Whit is going to let the OC do his job.

That was true in Ludwig’s offense but not sure that will be the case with Beck’s offense.

At least Cam had the courtesy--or sense--to let Utah match. He's also showing that Utah doesn't have top-tier coffers.
