    That first boiler is a thing of beauty. Steam engines and boilers are an art of compassionate design. They have a certain sewing machine smoothness, but also a certain satisfying thump. The smell of the fire. It's an experience! Your channel is particularly awesome in that regard.

    We used to have a big boiler in the Woodshop I worked at back in 1991 - 1996. It made the whole building Shake. It was an Old World War II weapons manufacturing building that was converted into giant wood shop. It was a really long building & would have been next to impossible to heat it any other way ! Maybe 700 feet long & 100 feet wide? I'm not sure it was big. There was only one maintenance guy that was allowed to work on it. I think he was a Old World War II veteran. That thing worked great. I remember Placing my lunch against it on break time & by 11 lunchtime it was hot & ready to eat. Sometimes it would get so hot in there we would have to open the doors! Lol

    I just want to say Keith that watching your videos I have learnt a lot about steam engines and boilers and still learn more with each video that I watch.. Thank You.

      That's good Tim - the reason why I first started making these videos was to show people how to do it in a simple & easy way.

      @@keithappleton As you would know from our past communication I do have 2 steam engines and boilers purely designed for RC model boats, but I do have a love for steam engines of all types and sizes in general.Your videos keep the interest going and your information adds to my knowledge and hones in on some practices of which I do not know or have heard of or just showing me other ways to do things. Keep up the great stuff. I hope your safe n well.

    Thank you for another fine video, the information is excellent. Will you be doing a series on controlling the engine? I would be very interested in learning about like things notching up, running in and the proper reversing in normal operating conditions. Thank you

    I was just wondering. Didn't anyone yet invent an automated water feed that keeps the water level in the boiler within safe levels?;

    • @keithappleton

      You can get them, but I prefer the manual method . . .

      As Keith says you can get them, but they are not fool proof and need constant checking, so most of us running RC Boats, fill the boiler 2/3 to 3/4 full sail until the level goes down to a safe level, bring the model in and chat with people until it is cool enough to refill then run it again. There are some who have pumps on board and they bring the boat along side the dock check the water level and A. use a hand pump to fill the boiler, B. adjust the bleed valve on an engine driven pump or turn on an electric pump, C. have sensors on the boiler that detect the water level and adjust the bleed valve or turn on an electric pump, quite often they will have pressure control on there gas feed so they can raise or lower it. Some of these systems can be quite complex and are as interesting as the steam plant itself, but non of them are completely accurate and fool proof you still need to check the boiler room once in a while.

      They’ve existed as far back as around 1910. There was a device called a flow motor regulated water and fuel for the White Steam Cars. They’ve advanced since then for large boilers for heating buildings and are computer controllers
