- A gentle, optimistic waltz song. Words and music by Septimus Winner under the pseudonym of “Alice Hawthorne.” Published by Lee & Walker
Lyrics
1. Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word
Wait, till the darkness is over
Wait, till the tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow
After the shower is gone
Chorus:
Whispering Hope
Oh how welcome thy voice
Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice
Whispering Hope
Oh how welcome thy voice
Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice
2. If in the dusk of the twilight
Dim be the region afar
Will not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star?
Then when the night is upon us
Why should the heart sink away
When the dark midnight is over
Watch for the breaking of day
This parlor song found its way into the church and gospel songbooks. It is at the same time Victorian and semi-classical.

Great, well sung rendition of this wonderful old song! It’s amazing how you can perfectly overdub the two voices with one singer. Many thanks.
I love to heard this original version.
Whispering Hope my best music God will bless those voices that sang it
Very beautiful and very beautifully done!!💕👏👍🌹✝️🕎💓💗🛐❤️☦️🇺🇸✋🔯🎆✡️☸️💞☮️
AMEN❤❤❤
Thank you for documenting this song with sheet music and all the lyrics. You are a treasured resource for me.
Charming! Love the piano, too. One of my fondest memories is harmonizing with a cousin when we were kids, "You Are My Sunshine." It's awesome.
What a neat feature! Well done SMSinger!
Ha ha ha joyous!
The return of the unerring One buoys me to be Holy
What a beautiful song

Amei essa música, uma melodia muito linda
The song is written in 3/4 time and is meant to be a duet presented in a parlor around a piano or a music hall on stage. Since it was in waltz tempo it was also meant to be danced to. This was the same time Johann Strauss11 was writing his waltzes in Vienna.
The words, with their joyful and optimistic vision, indicate Winner was not writing "sacred" music for hypocrites that would pretend some sky fairy would be accepting of the song and he did not slow it to a dirge to make it "more holy"..
This presentation is perfectly synchronised with the time and rhythm of the original dance tune as Winner wrote it.

Ain't cognitive dissonance great. As the poet says "Hope springs eternal in the human breast. Man never is, but always "to be' blessed. " While we live we waste so much time pretending that Pandora did not really empty the jar.
Who knows what Hawthorne was feeling when he wrote this outlier song but he can be forgiven, certainly, for one minor flaw in an otherwise rational life.
@@seanamuigean96 wow ur really sophiticated. smart man. big brain.
There is only one big brain, and it is attached to a heart, and we all own a very small piece of it, thank you both for your comments, my brothers.

Well done! Wish you could sing 3rd verse, too.

Dad, please kiss me in my sleep tonight.
The front paper kinda looks like an Ames lettering guide.
