Hi owen, im new to pole lathes and was just wondering what is that tool? You are using to spin the bowl it looks like the pole lathe version of a chuck

It's called a mandrel. There are different types of them. Some have a tenon which fits into a hole drilled into the bowl blank. Others have spikes which hammer in
