British comedy is brutal. Only Ricky's humour is also savaging the reality of the industry to people who know what goes on but can't or won't acknowledge it . The faces in the audience are priceless.
We Brits like to keep quiet, for a while, then unleash an uncompromising assault on accepted wisdom.
Gervais does it especially well, which is why we're quite proud of him.
However, Gervais also despises anti-American chauvinism - common in Britain, and embraces an international, genuinely egalitarian outlook.
All comedy around the world is "brutal", except "American" comedy.

Ricky is an international superstar, a British national treasure and a genuinely nice guy who, be it human or animal charity, puts his money where his mouth is and doesn't just ask other people to do so.

His earlier Golden Globes appearances were much funnier than this, especially the 2016 monologue.
But the "rant" in this was epic.

The Hollywood Foreign Press has him back because ratings are all that matter.
