  • When the book "Daughters of Copperwomen" came out in 1981, a copy made its way to me and I was stunned. So well-written, but the content! It's a "book about female empowerment," and "is a wonderful retelling of myths and history through the voices of elderly First Nations women from the American Northwest. The author Anne Cameron is of Celtic descent, but lived close to the reservation on Vancouver Island and chronicled their tales in this book ..."
Simultaneously, I started silent meditation retreats with Ruth Denison down by Joshua Tree in S CA - just a bit higher, in high desert - which has its own special flavor and special kind of silence and stillness. When I emerged, I got up early (5:30 AM!) for a few weeks, to continue the experience, and it's in that period that this song was born. And when I say "born," I mean I saw it arise. That's what happens in meditation, as part of the process you see thoughts arise, until they abate and the goal is to notice them stop, at least for small moments. It's a tricky slope, but in my opinion you must try. Be a spirit warrior!
Anyway! Out came his song, which means so much to me. It also meant a lot to every band I played it with, in which Jean was always the bass player - when she lowered the bottom string to "D", we knew we were in business. At least three drummers have played this with her: Leo Adamian, Janelle Burdell, and Lee John Madeloni (her son). You gotta know what it's about, and be in the vibe. It's not just a groove, it's an experience. So you're passing something on.
The video is in part a conceptualization, and we (Ann and I) did the best we could. I think our camera had a bit of a problem focusing on my white hair, which I don't have much of right now -- but it's there! Anyway, doing the live take (from the middle on) was fun. One take, and I got a chance to really get with the song and groove. So fun.
So please enjoy to the max. I hope it gives you some courage (and strength) to face the days ahead. Actually, those days are already here! So may it be of good use to you. May we walk the good Path, in Peace. xx

Oh - my treasured diety is Guan Yin, so I began with her. After that, Ammachi (I attended her first gathering in the US, in a house in SF, and believe me that was a revelation. Then again, next year I believe at a college in Oakland, and after that she was off to the races - her message and heavenly hug (for lack of better words, but believe me so needed) made it seem impossible to get next to her ~ but people attend and wait patiently while she gives everyone that hug! Sometimes it takes days, and she does not sleep - she is The Mother. I assure you, a blessing.
Then there is a statue from the Peace Pagoda in Shutesbury, MA (which I had a very small part in building, and was at it inauguration), and finally some Mongolian female shamans, whom I've been vey touched by, though I've never been in their presence. You don't have to be.
So please, enjoy and take in in every positive way possible. Om Ah Hung!
    xx

A Velvety Smooth take as is every song on the original vinyl. Like a summer mist or morning dew drops on a petal. Every vocal note chases the other and the melody. Simply Magnificent June is this ghost of summer. Almost an imitative madrigal. These are the things magic are made of. 'Le Conco D'oro' That beautiful ridge of gold is yours. Bravo ❤
