I was taught to always allow an engine to idle for at least 1 minute after initial startup. To allow the oil to reach all bearing surfaces and stabilise. Same prior to switch off as this then allows turbos to slow down so its not running at high rpm with no lubricating oil going round the bearings.

The second lever is an acceleration lever besides to fuel pedal
