    One of my favorite chapters from the manga. It showcases a lot of themes in regards to Norse societies view on men and violence. It also presents a moral dilemma and has a lot of the new Farmland characters, interacting with the dilemma. It really does a great job of characterizing the cast. We also somewhat answer Einar's question, "does Arnheid have a similar deal?". Ketil doesn't seem to want to let her go. Poor Arnheid :(
    The dub was hit and miss this episode, I loved the Einar Thorfinn dub but a lot of the Ketil and Thorgil line delivery/ lines themselves felt a bit off. Overall the dub is sometimes really good, other times not so good. It is growing on me a bit, I still really prefer the sub but for the most part the dub is pretty good.

    Interesting aspect of Ketil so far - get the sense that he's like Thors but more motivated by a fear of violence and guilt than any firm sense of principles. Still seems like a far better guy than most other people though. Interested to see how his arc might end.

    • @feetovertits9597
      @feetovertits9597 Місяць тому +2

      Thors was motivated by guilt as well, certainly more than Ketil given the amount of people he killed. Also I do think Ketil has his own principles too, given the fact that he gives the opportunity for his slaves to buy their own freedom, which isn’t common for most slave owners.

    • @ArynBacklogDragon
      @ArynBacklogDragon Місяць тому +16

      @@feetovertits9597 yeah, I see A LOT people take *that moment* as a showing that Ketil "was always bad" but I think this episode really shows that he was indeed a good person, man had his flaws and eventually the situation led him to spiral embrace his worst aspects. but from his inner monologue about not wanting to hurt the kids, the fact that despite his wealth, he was still working the fields himself, and the respect everyone around had for him (down to former slaves like Pater choosing to remain by his side after earning their freedom) shows that he was a better person than most around him at the time.

    • @hm02fly75
      @hm02fly75 Місяць тому +7

      @@ArynBacklogDragon I interpret his actions completely differently. I think Ketil's entire character shows how cowardice can often be disguised as kindness. Without going into specifics since this is an earlier episode, I will just say that his actions as a whole are that of an emotionally weak coward. We see that much better later on, but even here if he really didn't want to beat these kids up because of their circumstances then he could have stood up for them as the leader of his farm and family. In a roundabout way I think a lot of this goes back to what his father said about acquiring too much wealth instills a sense of fear over losing it. He is so scared to lose the respect of his workers and guards and jeopardize the state of the farm that he'd rather beat kids that he didn't want to than stand up for what he actually believes in. It can seem like kindness on the surface because he didn't desire to hurt them like Thorgil does, but it does expose his true nature if you look at what is driving him.

    I really appreciate the way Arnheid is animated/drawn at the end. Because in other contexts it could have been a loving scene: she is in bed with Ketil, stroking his face, speaking soothing words. But her blank expression really says it all. Even as Ketil says she is the only one he can be himself around, and begs her to stay...she has no choice but to be those things for him. No choice but to stay. Because even if Ketil hates violence, he isn't unwilling to enact it. And being Ketil's "favorite" helps Arnheid stay safe and alive, no matter how else she feels about it or whatever she might actually want. Ketil may be nicer than other slavemasters, but he is still her slavemaster, and that final hanging shot of her blank expression as she says comforting words truly underlines it all.

    • @rikudou947
      @rikudou947 Місяць тому +17

      Completely disagree with this take. Arnheid didn't have a choice in her marraige either, as it was an arranged marriage, feminism didn't exsit back then lol. So this actually isn't very different, as Arnheid is treated more like a mistress than a slave (and she would've leveled up even more after giving birth to his child). She has duties to fullfill in exchange for Ketil potecting and providing for her, *the same way it was with Gardar* . It's not like he was making her do manual labor like Thorfinn and Einer, Ketil was treating her better than his own wife !
      So this whole "she has no choice but to be those things for him." completely falls a part once you take that into consideration and actually read the story with the intended historical lens and context instead of using 2024 morality.
      Plus Arnheid herself said that she was looking forward to her future with Ketil and *THEIR* child, as that was a chance for her to restart her life and be a mother again, which is all she ever wanted. This time it's with someone who was the opposite of her previous husband Gardar who was the typical Viking known to fight for the sake of glory, she's with someone who’d rather properly protect his family by being by their side while also providing a peaceful and safe environment for their child.

      @@rikudou947 That’s a wild way to interpret this. She is literally his slave. That means she had no choice. By definition. There is no way around that, and you trying to argue otherwise is outright bizarre. Furthermore, the story doesn’t say anything about her marriage being arranged. Everything we see indicates she was very happy with Gardar. She also is seen doing manual labor around the property, even if it’s not the same labor as Thorfinn and Einar. Again, she has no choice in any of this. Her trying to find happiness in the event that she becomes a mother again is literally her trying to find hope and joy in a terrible situation, because she doesn’t think there is any other option for her.

      @@rikudou947 I have to assume you haven't seen the whole season because like wtf dude. Like the other comment said she was quite literally stolen from her home having her husband and child taken from her and was sold to Ketil and impregnated by Him. She says she's looking forward to her future with Ketil because she has no choice my guy, not because Katil is her ideal man and Gardar was just a wild viking. Very weird, sus, and downright alarming take you have here bud.

    • @rikudou947
      @rikudou947 Місяць тому +10

      @@Lady_Yunalesca “Furthermore, the story doesn’t say anything about her marriage being arranged.”
      Arnheid literally says that her marriage with Gardar was arranged (rewatch ep 14 and try to pay attention to the dialogue more than your agenda this time).
      If you’r gonna harp about how big of a deal her not choosing to be with Ketil then at least be consistent, she was given to Gardar as a wife in a political arrangement to strengthen their alliance. This practice was common in medieval Scandinavia, where marriages were often strategic alliances between families or clans. She never had a choice to begin with, so using the “she didn’t choose to be with Ketil” argument is simply irrelevant and disingenuous as she didn’t choose to be with Gardar either, you’re being wilfully ignorant of the nuance, culture and traditions of the era.
      Was she happy with Gardar despite their marriage being arranged ? Yes. Was she happy with Ketil and wanted to be the mother of his child, also yes. Arnheid choosing her partner is completely irrelevant to this conversation given the context of this story, it’s all about her quality of life and safety as a wife and a mother for her child. She wanted to move on from Gardar when he came back for her, and it was only her guilt that made her go and see him again after he was caught, which led to him escaping and forced her into that entire situation with him that ultimately led to her death.

    No, Eric. I don't think a nose will still smell when it's cut off.
    Jokes aside, we're getting to the real meat now. How this season is more drama, not action. The different morals of all these different people displayed while dealing with slaves. And so far, Ketil looks like the nicest one there (apart from the old master). Pater also seems nice but is more logical about this. He came up with a punishment that satisfied all parties present (relatively speaking). I feel like it's been mentioned already but it makes sense since Pater was also just a slave that bought his life back.
