"Just good, just good," Thomas says! Thanks for publishing the in-depth version now. Great video. Best wishes.

Great review.... very good appraisal.
I've owned my Soul EV for around a month now and it's very hard to fault the overall package that Kia have created here. It's an excellent vehicle.
👍
Futher, another great review thanks for detailing all the aspects of the Soul EV@
🙏
18:14 "Find parking spot" Please Thomas, you know better than that. Yes it is not a long vehicle at 4.20 m, but Europe's most sold EV and the second most sold EV in the world the Renault Zoe is 4.08 m and would be easier to park. Same with VW E-Up (3.60 m) or Honda E (3.89 m) or Peugeot E-208 (4.06 m).
No option of 10.5KW charger as quoted
I need this beautiful car E Soul😍👍
They should have cut back on the features and uprated the plastics, fit and finish... KIA are okay for a few years and low mileage drivers.. Don't expect 10 years and 120 000 miles of trouble free driving..
Sure it's ugly but for low mileage, city drivers it is a decent choice - assuming you're happy paying a massive EV surcharge at purchase time and 10 year pay back period - also assuming the government don't increase the electricity taxes, which they will surely do.
2013 Hyundai Elantra has 1 million miles on the original engine
Whoever came up with the rotary dial selector for gears deserves to be fired. I had that in a Ford recently, wanted to change something on the entertainment system and started switching from D to R because I'm used to having these selectors for the entertainment system
I understand there will be a sporty version for sociopaths coming out. The R-Soul.
Maybe you can sell your soul to the devil then
@Fletch As a Canadian, it took me a while to get it. That's not a common expression here.
Not able to access the VW ID.3 in Canada so purchased a Soul EV Limited (64kw battery). It is fun to drive, no range anxiety and lots of room like Thomas reported. We embraced the quirkiness of the car to even get it in "Space Green". Added some matt black lines on the side and off we go. The pickup is so much fun, it is like a supercharged go-cart. Even flashing led lights at night with the stereo system. Lots of safety features standard at the limited level. Thanks for the review.
Sounds cool 😎
You made a right choice, way better than id3
Way better than the ID.3 in my opinion. I switched my choice from ID.3 to this Kia soul before buying the id3. Id.3 interior is stupid with really bad functional design choices (all is touch)
This car has a better range than the base model 3 and is rated closer to EPA numbers.
The range is highly dependent on your driving and is certainly more efficient on the lower regen levels which gives it a large advantage over tesla. 15kwh per 100km is very achievable on this car and 13kwh if you drive nicely. 16kwh if you are driving fast with stopping and going with heating. 17kwh if you are driving 30km/h over the speed limit with some high way at 130. It takes a bit of time to adjust to the car different regen levels before you can consistently get lower kwhs as a newer EV driver. Alex on Auto was also getting very good range on the same battery and motor.
Paddles are really nice to use and you can adjust on the fly depending on traffic conditions.
Getting rid of the eco tires and getting bridgestone quiet track would make the car even more quiet - very noticeably.
The car due to it's boxy shape, is very comfortable inside. Once you sit inside the vehicle you would realize why this car deserves a try. There is certainly more space than the Kona and the Niro when i comes to the feeling of space on any seat. Don't judge it's "boxy shape" have a seat inside! This is where you will be spending your time as the driver!
You can see the regen on the other menu in kW . It is certainly a very straight forward vehicle when it comes to driving and the suspension is certainly a good balance between stiffness and softness even on bad roads.
This is certainly a really practical everyday driver car that gives you really good range while at a high seating position for the comfort - yes seats and space is comfortable too and even for tall people and long legs.
450KM range is certainly achievable with this vehicle and crossing America using public chargers are not an issue at all. In fact people have crossed US in the Bolt EV. I highly recommend this car.
Here are the list of actual range for below EVs all on the same route with the same driver:
Kona EV: 254mi
Base Model 3: 192mi
Niro EV: 239mi
Soul EV: Same battery and same motor as the Kona and niro would put it a bit below the niro due to it's boxy shape. My experience line up with numbers listed.
Thank you for your time and review!
Cheers keep tuning in!
We purchased the 64kw model and have taken a number of long trips very nice vehicle in all aspects!
I think that car is the"new one" with better range, less noice becuse its have Michelin tyres instead of the bad Nexen when its introduce it on the market. Really likes your reviews!👍 You and TeslaBjörn makes the best tests of EV:s on UA-cam right now. Keep it going👍 thanks for this. Huggs from Sweden 🇸🇪
Tack!
@@autogefuehl is it so ? ... did you test the new model 2020 ?
do you know the differences ?... heard about armwrest in the backseats... and now also other tires ? ... would be great

Another great review with plenty of detail about the Soul EV. I've read that the North America release of this car has been delayed until 2021. Hopefully, Kia is able to get battery production at a high enough level to allow this car to be sold outside of California. A road trip on a CCS charging vehicle is still a challenge in the US with the limited (and problematic) charging locations.
The Soul EV will be sold initially in all states that have adopted California's air quality standards. At last count, I believe that's 19 other states.
Electric cars actually have a soul?
gas cars have one?
@@kliaklia6391 1. Its a joke
2. Most of them do
Klia Klia gas cars have plenty of recalls!
Unless we are talking Tesla Model 3 I still think this is the most appealing electric car. It shows how rugged functionality can still beat all the design in the world. And even the previous generation Soul EV made BMW i3 look bad by comparison.
Nice and easy does it every time...
Drove this recently and was very impressed. Good driving position, fun acceleration, practical space. Better handling than the Hyundai Kona and better price, and a more usable everyday experience than a Mini (sad to say). Yup, good review Thomas of a good car.
The styling reminds me a bit of the Skoda Roomster. Great little familycar, that was.
Later in the year they are introducing the ‘Sport’ model, it will be called the Kia ‘R’ Soul.
23:34 Tomas don't worry. We in Die Niederlande just lowerd our speed limit. And we haven't killed ourselfs... yet.
driving the 64 kWh Kona battery 40k km a year with less than 10 lightcharging (not 50 kW but 150+ kW chargers) in a year its so easy. But dont forget that the 2020 modell needs a 1100 euro liquid cooling service every 60 k km (not the 2019 modell).
Boxy like my Yeti, I like it!
agree, have 2 yeti's in the household. VW-group should release a new electric Yeti, would buy it at release. and now Kia fulfills my wishes :)
@@brollenius Actually i think they did undercover yeti with Skoda Kamiq. I love Yeti for the headroom.
@@veed71 sort of a new, lame version of the Yeti imo..not that impressed. more generic, less practical/funky
Great in-depth review, good info. Looks like a nice Kia.
Thomas, I know it's a long time ago....but...
Do you know if Kia has the same limitation with motor performance like VW & co?
(maximum power only > 88% battery or something like this)
i dont know why koreans make the ugliest evs but they also make some of the best. dont really like the looks but its on my shortlist. VAG offerings are terribly expensive with any worthwhile options. PSG don't have a proper timer and can't be bothered to give us a glovebox in the uk. its pretty much nissan, mg, koreans, or tesla depending on budget and kit desired.
Thanks T! Agree your points on price, to function and design package. This car will make sense for a lot of ppl.
Kia should make a smaller cheaper(barebones) version of this! A mini Soul from 20000euro
Called Kia R-Soul
When Thomas has that grin and non-stop saying good things about the Kia e-Soul, you know he's sold. Lol so cute to see the sexcitement on his face. Happy weekend Thomas 🤗
😂
Cars should be easy to drive and easy to operate. VW have lost the plot. Great review as always, Thomas!
Yes, as always an excellent review from Thomas, the trouble is I always want the car that he is reviewing at the time. Trouble is I can’t afford any of them, (old age pensioner}. Isn’t it windy, no, it’s Friday now, put the kettle on.
Nice review of an ugly car.
I love this channel! Great job 😁
Not bad at all. Makes a good second/third car to run around town for errands and school pickup/drop off. Or if single and living not too far from work, a daily driver. Nice to have more competition in the” normal priced “ EV sector. Surely, a market signal from the producers that the game played is no longer rugby, but handball.
And a 7 year warranty in the UK. I’m disappointed with reviews of ID3 so far and this looks worth a test drive if I cancel my VW order when I finally see it. Thanks again for such a comprehensive review.
thanks looks great, we have a 2016 Soul EV. Great around town car but needs more range. Great for a small family. Thank you for the extensive review :)
I hope Germany keeps their unrestricted stretches of autobahn, it forces drivers to be considerate and disciplined, not like in the UK where slow coaches sit the fast lane
IN PROFILE IT LOOKS LIKE A NISSAN AND TOO MANY OTHER CARS WITH THE C/D-PILLAR KICK-UP AND FLOATING ROOF. MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO.
Why is this car so good lol?
Nice electric Land Rover
Fantastic car, at 25k EUR nearly new these are a great buy now
My thumb went up for Thomas. It flopped quickly for the red box thing 🤦♂️
Thumbs up is always for the video performance 😎
Not to be picky, but one would think ICE car manufacturers who were/ remain under great pressure to improve the gas mileage their cars attain would make such wheels standard, and would have done so years ago, if they are so "efficient". Is there any real efficiency with aerodynamic wheels? What would one lose by removing these wheels from an EV and using standard alloys?
There is, however they are problematic to use on ICE cars since the breaks would risk overheating in some scenarios. EVs only minimally use the physical brakes so there is only minimal heat developed in the wheels
Most electric cars have aerodynamic wheels apparently to increase/ improve efficiency. If these wheels makes such a notable increase in efficiency, why don’t manufacturers of ICE cars use them, too? I dislike the look of many of these wheels and would want to replace them with normal alloys. Thoughts?
They do. Many ICE facelifts offer aero wheels now
So, this or the ID3?
Id3 has worse range at a higher price.
ID3 surely looks better tho
Thank you Tomas for not driving a Blue Kia.
ugly car :-)))
good car
Thomas loves his head-banger musik! Lol
Great review, thanks Thomas. I don't know if it is possible as maybe you don't have the cars for too long but it would be great to hear what the headlights are like at night.
Thanks! Sometimes we can do that yeah
I truely love this car, as weird as the rear end looks... It's my daily drive, and I have done already 20000km in the last 8 months with it... Including winter where the lack of heatpump (despite the e-Design trim) does hurt the range a bit (it simply isn't available in the french market, Kia considered we didn't get cold enough?🤷🏻♂️)... I turned it into the first tweeting car in the world @DarthMaulEV 🤣
Great review, Thomas! Especially appreciated here in the US since we likely won't be seeing the Soul EV until the 2021 calendar year. It's eagerly anticipated by Soul fans, an especially broad demographic here in the Seattle, WA area. In fact, KIA's success with the Soul lineup throughout the US is impressive. Even in the midst of the COVID pandemic and economic disaster of the first half of 2020 KIA managed to sell more than 34,000 Souls in the first half of 2020. That topped the sales of all subcompact cars by 14,000 over the Nissan Versa and 20,000 over the Honda Fit. And if it's considered to be a subcompact crossover, the Soul's sales were topped only by the Chevy Trax with about 40,000 (non-fleet) sales and the Honda HRV with 37,000 sold.
In the Puget Sound area around Seattle I see "Twenty Something" hipsters, young families, and downsizing senior citizens tooling around in Souls. Our local postal carrier uses hers for delivery of everything from letters to a load of large packages. Best car she's ever owned, she says. And for those who see beauty in functionality and versatility the Soul is gorgeous.
I don't own a Soul though I own my second KIA Sorento and I'm seriously interested in seeing the Soul EV when it arrives. My only complaint? KIA is sometimes challenged in naming their vehicles. The KIA luxury sedan known as the K9 in Korea was renamed the K900 in the US presumably to avoid English speakers making jokes about the car being a "dog." I love my Sorento named after a city in Italy but the city is spelled with two "r's" (Sorrento.) Not a big deal but you'd think that a Korean automaker would know how to spell "Seoul" considering it's the name of the capital of South Korea. At least they spelled Telluride (Colorado) correctly. :)
The 2020/2021 Soul EV is for sale across the border in British Columbia, and has been for over a year. They need to get this on sale in the U.S.!
@@ScrapKing73 The problem apparently is the short supply of available batteries. In the much smaller Canadian market the supply may be sufficient while the US market cannot be supplied.
Getting mine in November. So looking forward to it
Sad to hear unlimited highway might go away. Good times create weak people
Hi - yes, and also: ISAS is coming from 2022 on all new cars in the EU and UK. (ISAS - Intelligent Speed Assistance Systems). Or it's sometimes called ISA - Intelligent Speed Adaptation.
Will you guys be reviewing the Hyundai Kona Electric as well?
Hope so!
You mentioned less braking gives less strain on the brakes, yes and no maybe. For the brake pads, some former Tesla technicians that opened their own shop in Norway ( EV Services) to be a good 3rd party support to Tesla, yes support, not competitor, but they do all kinds of EV's. They said that the problem with brakes on EV's is that many EV's use normal brake pads that are meant for cars with engines, and often what happens is that there will get moist into the brake pads that don't get to dry out with the help of the heat when braking. What happens is that the brake pad will then loosen from the backplate or the pad will actually break off in small pieces because the pad is not dense enough to be used with an EV. There is another company in Canada named NRS that specialise in making EV friendly brake pads , EV Services have teamed up with NRS to nullify this issue, also EV Services coat the brake discs to prevent corrosion.
Interesting!
Yes, interesting. And corrosion on brake discs (ICE or BEV) can be a real pain to car owners (not manufacturers, who make lots of money replacing corroded discs, and don't cover them on warranties). Some modern cars, if you don't use the car much, or don't use the brakes much, suffer from corroded disc at very low mileages, and it can cost a 1000 euros to replace all four and the pads. A coating on the discs to prevent corrosion would be a great thing for the consumer but bad for the manufacturer!
@@autogefuehl I edited my answer a bit. The Company that makes the brake pads are based in Canada, called NRS. nrsbrakes.com/ and the Norwegian Ex Tesla Technicians are named EV services.
No good looks to be found here.
In germany typical cost for EV charge is about 33c per kwh. For 60 kwH cost €20 for average of 400 km. With most hybrid KIA CEED, Corolla, etc. 400 km takes 16 L in city+highway or avout €20. For size and range wise, EV is not as good as hybrid in all respects. Long term ownership is worse in EV, battery replacement in Corolla after 15y may cost €2350 total. In EV, we are lucky if it can pass 10y and will cost more than €20-40k depends on the size of battery.
In the UK, our overnight rate is 5p / kwh. I can do 400km in my Soul EV for less than £3
@@Richard-io9xe you pay it after 10y when the battery need replacement for £25k intead of £2k like in hybrid with much smaller battery, much smaller replacement cost . Toyota gives 15 y warranty in hybrid battery in UK and still only cost £16 in 400km. Ev is still a far cry for logical people. It's a cult
@@rondhole if you seriously think new batteries cost 25k then there seems little point in continuing the debate as that is nonsense. Besides, batteries will almost certainly outlive the car. And I would never have a car that long to worry about it.
@@Richard-io9xe Actually about $45k for new Tesla Battery. Statistically in the world especielly in USA, 80% of 20 years+ old Toyota, Honda, and Ford F150 are still roaming around like cockroaches. It is not sensible to get EV if your income is less than $60k per year and you can afford a new car every 10 years, unless you already have a house fully paid with garage. Most of Toyota hybrid survive beyond 200k miles/10 years benchmarks. Some may need battery replacement but it is still sub-$3k to get new that have lifespan at least another 10 years. People who had Tesla will Junk it when the battery is dead and out of warranty.
autogefuhl reviewing a korean car? what madness is this???? xD
Can you even afford the car? You’d better have a look around and update your dodgy knowledge what the world is going on...you funny punk.

Excellent review!
Excelent review Thomas!
The car instead is ugly, ugly, ugly.
Sort of a kei car (design wise ) which are highly apreciated in Japan because the streets are very small and especially the parking lots.
Cheers pal!
If only the back wasn't so ugly 😭
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Here in the Seattle area the Soul is so popular among so many different demographic groups that dealers could probably sell them by putting a vending machine in the show room.
@@stephenhendricks103 Well, a car can be popular despite its looks if the other aspects of the car are good. Not everyone cares about the design of their car that much
Hi. Great channel ! Would appreciate it if you talked this year about the available commercial solutions (if any...) and the price for replacing the electric batteries in all these EV or phev cars. Just did a Tesla Model 3 test drive in Europe and as of now, battery replacement is 20 000 EUR. Doesn't this simply rule out these cars beyond their warranty deadline or as pre-owned cars for the greatest majority of people ? As of today what guarantee is there to have a compatible commercially available and affordable solution to replace the EV / PHEV battery ? Best.
+Didier Gras. Yes! Basically, BEVs and PHEV's are expensive. And FCEV's. Comparatively. And expensive ICE cars are, err, expensive. One suggestion: buy a cheap car, or recycle an old one! All the best.
Any chance for a review of the new Honda Jazz?

It not a sure about the looks 🤔🏴🏴🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🙄
I really wish they'd eliminate the center console part in the middle of the front seats on EVs, to make the interior a bit more open. Having a gear lever there makes sense if it has to be there for mechanical reasons, but a button setup or dial to change the "gear" on EVs can be placed almost anywhere.
The front end just looks like a really crap range rover, and that C pillar reminds me of a discovery
In America this car is like BigFoot people have claimed to see it but there are no comfermed sightings.
Extremely ugly car! Is it a joke or what? Wartburg was more stylish car.
Would you buy a car purely based on looks? I wouldn't!
Truly awful design.
7:50 Laggy infotainment in 2020 is unacceptable.
God it is ugly. How can anybody find this design attractive?
Michael Blue De gustibus non discutandum est 😉
Micheal, Sit inside it is very roomy and comfortable. Functionally it is a very good car. If you care about looks and showing off, go for an Audi, Porshe or Mercedes. There are tons that are better in the category of looks than the vast majority of EVs for less.
If they shape the back like a Porsche it would be great. Light from this EV though during nighttime driving is very good! Boxy shapes certainly means more space.
The face looks a lot like a Range Rover
Do they deliberately doing electric vehicles such ugly, so that no one buys it? Electric vehicle designs are today very ugly. Lets hope it will change when giants of this industry will change to all electric in 10 years.
Seen a lot of people have it in my area. Do you want to know why? Functionality , changing driving style on the fly, adjust regen on the fly to suit your driving style and current conditions.
So you have the tesla fish, kona, niro polestar 2 etc all EVs that arn't so stylish.
Maybe the Nio EP 9 or the Nio ES6 is more for you. Not available in NA though. But certainly looks great and destroys many in the western market today. Also they have battery swaps that actually work and you can swap to a larger battery on road trips. It's done and swapped in 5 minutes. Much cheaper than the model X has more features looks better and far better looks and seating. You get "theater seats" for the wife too and built in shade and a large working sunroof that the tesla Model X doesn't have.
Absolutely love the ES 6 when I was driving it in China.
@@AFlyingCookieLOL What I like about the Porsche EV, is that they took Panamera, made it EV, made some veeeery small changes and vuala! new excellent model Porsche Taycan. I really like the cars design/style that we have today. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Mazda, Hyundai, Toyota and so on, all these cars have excellent design appropriate for today's design/style. But look at BMW 5 series and look at sh1tty BMW i8. I don't understand the strategy companies have towards electric cars. Why not to have normal looking, normal size cars WITH electric engine...
Whatta hideous car🤭
nice review but this car its ugly ...
