Even if the pick is traded there is a difference of what do you get for them. Draft is the biggest tool that changes relative strength between teams. If you draft badly you can't get good trades for those rookies and if you draft well you not only get a chance to score a dynasty tier player like Steph or Joker but can trade the good rookies even if they are not a fit for you at a good value. If you are anywhere but the absolute top the draft is the biggest tool to go up the power ranking.
it's been five years since i started following americans sports like nfl and nba and i still dont get the point of the draft system when someone finish high does he go to the outside world and be like okay world you chose and just wait until someone pick him for a random job ?
American sports in general operate in an environment that puts equity above ability to pay for stars. The draft system allows a team which labored at the bottom of the NBA for years, to use their draft position to develop a strong roster.
It’s to keep the league competitive. If it wasn’t for the draft, we’ll start to see an aristocracy in teams. We still have this problem, ei the lakers, but it’s mitigated bc of the draft. We (I’m Canadian) don’t want the chip to be revolving around the same 4-6 teams each year. Even though the teams I am a fan of (raptors and Knicks) are big market teams that theoretically would be in on the aristocracy, it’s much more interesting to see others compete. Bc now the players, coaching and now even front office has an “equal footing” when competing. The lakers front office doesn’t have much more of an advantage than the grizzles. This ofc is not 100% bc for example lebron probably would have nvr joined the lakers if it wasn’t in LA.
but that happens anyway the competition stay strong for the same 5 to 6 teams each year and the rest cant do anything about it if organization management is bad you can give it the 1st draft pick for the next 10 years and they still would not do anything with it ... if you got a company that you keep spending and losing more and more money each year for the past 10 years do you still keep it or just allow newer better companies take it's place
I only looked at the starters from each team; otherwise, you would have random rookies who didn't play a minute being shown in the graphic. Ginobili was on the bench in each of these years.

why does the graphic not have ginobili at the spurs for 2003, 2007 and 2014?
