Thank you! This worked perfectly with my 1935 Seth Thomas Plymouth mantle clock. I accidentally let the chime spring run down and when I wound it, the clock struck the hour on the half hour and the half hour on the hour, as well as being several hours out of sync. Your process resolved it, and now my clock is chiming correctly.
Bill, this was perfect, thank you! We have an early 1900's Seth Thomas clock from my Mom's grandmother, and this gets out of sync every time we forget to wind the coil that powers the chime. I was removing the hands from the clock to adjust, this is much less intrusive and worked like a charm. :-)
we have had one of these in my family since the 20's and always loved this clock as a kid. I haven't wound it in about 15 years and couldn't remember how it worked. thanks for your help
Thank you so much for this video. I bought a 1932 Seth Thomas mantle clock for my mother and didn't know a thing about it. Thanks to you it is now running perfectly!
We have a old clock similar to this that we don't use, never wind it at all. When my sister was dying she told us that when she passes she'll come back and give us a sign that she was on the other side. Well shortly after she died this clock "Gonged" like I said the clock hasn't been used in years, I truly believe my sister was saying Hi to us.
If the minute hand has a brass bushing in the center, the bushing can be rotated in the hand to correct the chime release time. Otherwise, it is not easy to adjust.
You can do it that way but to me it it seems more complicated...What I do is I just simply count the number of strikes and move the little hand to the correct hour and then it is back in sync.
There is also another way to synchronize it. Move the hour hand back 2 hrs if the strike is few hours away from it or any hour forward. If possible to move the hour hand.
On this clock it is OK to turn the hand back as long as you don't go back past the hour or half-hour. In this case we are moving the minute hand backward from 2 minutes beore the half-hour.
Thank you. I have a clock like this one, only it has three winders. My mother’s family is from Plymouth, Conn., just near the Thomaston line. Also my great grandfather worked for Sessions in Bristol.
There is another way to synchronize, a clock repair shop showed me how. You do it without touching the hands at all. What you do is in the back, open the door and watch the clock chime, the lever that moves when it chimes is the key.You just lift it up with some kind of probe to go through the cycle till it is where you want it. NOTE: You do not want to use your hand inside the clock to do this
Thanks for this easy to follow video! I have a very similar Plymouth Clock that is off by one half hour. (ex. it strikes 8 at 7.30). How does one correct in half hour increments? Thanks again!
My grandmother left me a clock which is very close to this one. The clock face has no name and looks identical to this one. So some Seth Thomas mantel clocks did not have their name stamped on the white facing of the clock?
Hi Bill, I inherited a Seth Thomas #6 mantle clock. I loved the sound of the ticking and chimes so much growing up. However, the clock has not been used in a number of years. It was not broken and excellent condition. It was just replaced with a newer clock when my Dad retired. Any advice you could give me to get it working again? I would very much appreciate it any info. you could suggest. The key does not want to turn..but I don't believe its wound too tight. Thank you so much!!
There is no such thing as winding a clock to tight, you might need to oil it put the pendulum and let it do its job, if it doesn’t work, than it might need to be professionally cleaned and oiled
I have a Seth Thomas Adamantine Westminster chime clock, and it's chiming one hour ahead of the clock time. Will I have to do this procedure 11 times to get back 1 hour of sync for the hour bell? Thank you!
I have a Seth Thomas Tambour type mantle clock with a 69 movement that I bought at a flea market for $30. It only ran for about 5 minutes each try, after adjusting the beat. I then cleaned the pivot points with contact cleaner spray solvent, blew them out with compressed air, oiled with synthetic clock oil, swabbing up excess. Now the clock works fine even though a couple bushings have noticeable play in them. But I find that the half hour and hourly chimes are 2 minutes too fast. The clock hour was out of sync with the chime hour but I got that fixed by moving the hour hand to match the chime time, then advancing the minute hand all around until I reached the actual time. But how can I sync the minute hand to chime at the hour and half hour, not 2 minutes early?
I have a Seth Thomas Westminster Chime 8-day key wound mantel clock. Your instructions tell how to synchronize the striking of the chimes by advancing it, My clock is doing the opposite. It is chiming one more hour than the hands show. Example: if the clock shows 3:00 then the chimes will strike 4 times on the hour. It's always an extra bong than the actual time I've tried your instructions and it hasn't helped. The 15 min. chime and the half hour chime seem to be fine. Thanks for your advice.
Will this work on my Seth Thomas cymbal #4 bim bam clock? I’m very nervous and keep reading conflicting information about moving hands counter clockwise. I don’t want to break this precious clock. And is it just the minute hand that can be moved or is it also OK to adjust the hour hand? Thank you for your help!
Bill! I had to remove hands in order to get 89 movement out for cleaning. How to properly re-install hands, especially hour hand that has no flats, so they are synchronized?
This is neat. I have a (I think it is called Beehive) Seth Thomas Clock that has the two dials at the top one to turn on or off striking and the other to move the pedulum to adjust the speed. it has a Westminster chime but it chines a minute late - if the hands say 12:16 it chimes the quarter hour and it is that way with every chime - is there an easy way to adjust that?
How to set a Mauthe mantel clock.? Mine strikes the hour time at the 30 minute time. How do I correct this. Example 1.00 am is the chime 1.30 am is the hour chime for 2.00 am.
I have a Seth Thomas mantle clock. When i was out of town it ran down and got off sink. Now it is chiming on the half hour. How do i get it to chime on the hour again? thanks
No. If the hour strike is wrong, grasp the HOUR hand (short hand) at the center and turn it to the hour that the clocks strikes, then use the MINUTE hand (long hand) to set the clock to the current time.
Thanks for this vid, I have the same clock, its identical....mine has a plate on the back that says "Beld Christmas 1918". Perhaps from the store it was purchased from? Now i know my minute hand was replaced at some point, because it is spade like the hour hand in a slightly different metal. I used your video last time I set it, thanks for posting.
HI i have a mantel clock like this with no the last round part of the pentalum WHAT IS THE WEIGHT OF THE LAST PART OF THE PENTALUM OF THIS KIND OF CLOCK?
What kind of clock do you have? It depends on the type of clock and if it chimes the quarters, strikes the half our, or only strikes the hour. I will hopefully be able to help you.
@@thomasparrott2599 Move the minute forward to a few minutes before the hour and back to quarter to; or move the minute hand forward to 28 past the hour and back to quarter past. Each time you do this, the clock will strike the next hour or half-hour, in sequence.
I have a Seth Thomas Westminster Chime clock that is off the hour strike by two. But it also strikes on the quarter hour, is there a similar easy way to synchronize it?
It depends on the type of movement it has. The easiest way is to grasp the hour hand at the center and turn it to point to the hour that the clock strikes (the hour hand is a friction fit on the shaft and will turn unless it is on too tight. Be careful not to bend the hand). Then use the minute hand to set the clock to the correct time, moving it forward, letting it strike each quarter hour.
I've tried to adjust the chimes for 3 days. The chimes are 3 hours behind (eg at 8 pm, chimes 5 times). At first, I was hopefully in that the chimes were 2 hours behind. (Moved the minute hand to close to 27, then to 10, twice) But when I've tried it again, it went back to 3 hours behind. Bill, if you're still answering questions, any other suggestions?
Grasp the hour hand at the center and turn it to point to the hour that the clock is striking (turn it in either direction, which ever way is closer). Then set the clock to the current time using the minute hand, turning the hand forward. If the hour hand is too hard to turn, have a clock shop do it.
Hello- how could I turn the chiming off for the hours of sleep? It's a Seth Th tambour type, don't know any name or date, Westminster quarter-hour chime. Precious to me.
I have a Seth Thomas Mantel clock circa 1920, I had it cleaned and time set. The "horologist" kept for months and still the clock runs slow. I noticed a little hole with s and f on it. Is that for slowing and making it run faster? Need some help. Your tutorial on synchronizing the chime helped. Thanks
George Z Felan Yes, the small square with the F and S is for regulating the timekeeping. Turn the regulator clockwise to speed up the clock. Don't force it, if it gets hard to turn, it is at the end of its range.
thanks so very much i was beginning to give up on my clock,,sometimes it strikes 4 on the half hour or sometimes 5 have been working on it over 3 weeks so going to try whats on your video thanks again

my clock is striking on half hour and just one strike on the hour. how do I change it to the cooresponding strikes on the hour?

Prob the barrel that lifts the hammers is in the wrong place. The last time it got repaired

Around 3 to 5 ounces. The weight is not critical, it is the length that controls the timekeeping. This part is called the "bob".

how much to turn to slow it down one minute a day? Quarter turn, half turn?

If the procedure in the video doesn't work, you'll need to take off the minute hand, turn it by 180 degrees, and put it back on the clock.
OK will give it a try. Thanks !
