Thanks... great breakdown. I found it very interesting @ the 5:35 mark that when James Gibson says "extend your neck, extend your neck" that what he is physically doing to extend his neck is extending his spine (versus flexing his spine) and extending his hips (he actually gets a little taller because of this -- extending versus flexing the hips). To my way of thinking, it is spinal extension coupled with hip extension that gets the freestyler up on top of the water (including dry shoulders and dry armpits.

That exact process is broken down to "extend your neck" so it can be thought in a millisecond.

Do you think a good start is genetics/natural ability? I mean I’ve seen some great sprinters who’ve just not got the best start. We’ve heard Peaty say it’s something he’s working on/has worked on for years & not seen a great deal of start improvement.

I do think it is. A lot of sprint swimmers have fast twitch muscles, which is key to an explosive start. Maybe some are more developed lower body.

      No.
The absolute best in the world at starts worked their tails off developing it.
From the technique itself to the physical work they put in to generate the explosive jump etc.
Nah. It's not just natural and genetics etc. It's countless hours of hard physical work and the technical side.

@@albundy06 I swam for 12 years and practiced weekly, progressed into lifting to help generate more power etc. with very little change on my start. Which is why I made my comment about genetics. If peaty can pick up everything else at rapid speed why hasn’t his dive massively improved?

It does have a little of the athletic genetics to it but most of it is in the hard work you put to develop the correct start technic and angle of landing plus the smoothness of the stream line

@@kabes1776this is sorta true, a great dive (besides technique) comes from how explosive you can be. That is something that can be trained and improved.
How do you think people have a 30, 35, or even 40 inch vertical? Part of it is genetics but no one wakes up one day and suddenly can jump three feet in the air. They train explosiveness and power. Squats, Plyometrics, and the Clean and Jerk are some of the greatest ways to improve explosiveness.
These movements are proven to increase vertical jump height, therefore improving your start.
Caeleb dressel has a 40 inch vertical, why do you think he has one of the greatest starts in swimming?
