Thanks for the kind words, Andy and you're absolutely correct. Some of the build was a bit challenging. I didn't even show where I squeezed my truck inside the opening use as a ladder to drill/stake the upper layers. The triple digit heat almost stopped the build. To say the least, I was mighty glad when I finally got the last level in place. I surely could have used one or two able bodied hands to make things go more easily. Excellent job. Don! That should serve you well. The tractor and forks are very helpful. I've noticed recently that things are being made much heavier than when I was a young man! :-) Darn UA-cam never sent me the notification for this video. Had to look for it. Glad I found it!
Hey there my friend. I too am glad that you found the backstop-build video. Yep, the tractor with forks were a back-saver. I'm not as strong as I was back in my 50's and 60's. Since I had a stroke, life completely changed how and how long I can do things. Thanks much for your support and I hope you enjoyed the build. Curious question: is there anything I could do in my vids to make them more interesting to view? November will mark 44 yrs that my bride and I were united; of course my wife would say 46 yrs b/c of when we started our relationship. I seem to never get it right but I'm still learning 😁. Don that's quite a project that would be reel tough without the power equipment.....How did you manage such good lookin' ties.....Mine never looked that good.....LOL!!😎🦾👀
Great question, Wes. I traveled to another part of NC to get those Grade 1 RR Ties. It cost a pretty penny but well worth it. The ties normally sold at Lowe's were oddly enough, more expensive than each of these and the ones at Lowe's were all full of splits. The ties at Lowe's are Grade 3's or Grade 4's which normally are so split that they are almost not worth using. So I did some research to locate a fella who actually runs a business excavating RR ties from train tracks and sells Grade 1, 2, and 3's. These Grade 1 RR Ties are heavy as hell-o and I can drag/shift them around but they're just too dang heavy to handle w/o a tractor or some type of HE. Thanks much for watching and commenting, Wes. Hello Joe, you're correct. My right arm did get a pretty good workout pounding stakes. I too think the backstop will last a long time providing a tree doesn't fall on it 😁. I would not be worried about a tree falling on it. It will survive that no problem!!! The remaining thing on the wife's list is only a complete kitchen remodel... That's for 2023 though, so I have some time to rest until then! Lol!

Hey Ray, so happy you could stop by. I enjoyed your detailed 3-way light switch replacement. I need to do some electrical work and as stated in my comment to your vid, that I am NOT an electrician but for the fixes I want to do, it shouldn't require an electrician. Of course, I guess I'll know if I unintentionally zap out the power in the house. Yes Sir, the backstop was a project that I'd have to get in the "build" zone and remain there until completion and now I can officially say.....DONE! Thanks for the LIKE and if I remember correctly, you and Miss Demeanor were contemplating a small pistol range on your beautiful piece of land. Do you still have the wild hogs traversing your back field? That was funny how they'd sneak in, munch on grass, then high-tail it outta there when you'd take notice of them. Those boars can be a nasty handful if you ever approach them on a bad day. I watched a YT video where some folks were actually aggressively attacked during a stampede of boars. Hello Martin. You're correct, the large circular saw was the right tool for the job. It made quick work cutting those RR ties. I had no idea there was such a large circular saw until I did a bit of internet searching. It is a bit heavy but effective. A vewer commented that he was building his backstop using RR ties however, his walls collapsed. That prompted me to replace the root-filled dirt foundation with rock/gravel, then level things off. So far the interconnected walls seem quite sturdy. Thank you for watching and your positive comment. Appreciate the congratulatory remark on subscribers but that seems to roller coaster at times. As you're familiar w/ YT, my channel will gain 2 then lose 3 (roller coaster affect), however, I am very thankful for subscribers like you who have shown support throughout. Cool use of the railroad ties there. I have never used a chainsaw before but definitely can imagine it wouldn't be as precise. The handsaw one that would take ages! Glad you opted for circular saw. Its such a thick piece of wood. Such an exciting project :) really enjoying seeing all this come together ❤️

Joey, it sure was a lot of pounding but my arms did not show signs of soreness or weakness after the last rebar was pounded. In fact, I was almost disappointed b/c I was in such a zone that not cutting or pounding threw off my whole psyche. I worked on some safety mods for the backstop today and will feature tham once I get it edited. Thanks for the support and hope you enjoyed seeing the main backstop structure erected. This looks awesome. I have a question, did you put Rebar through every last one or just the first few railroad ties?
Hello AJ-sb8qk. EVERY railroad tie has four (4) rebar stakes attaching it to the RR tie directly beneath it. My RR ties were 6 inches deep so I pre-drilled four 12.5" deep holes down through the top RR tie and through the underlying RR tie. I then cut four rebar stakes 12.5 inches long to drive down through the top RR tie down into the RR tie that it sat on. This made the sides and back very sturdy. The key thing is to make sure that the original base (ground) layer is flush and level. I hope this answered your qestion and didn't mke things more confusing than it should be. Could you use #2 Ground Contact Wood Pressure Treated Lumber instead of ties considering sand stopping projectile. Ties here expensive and not great condition ?? Please advise
I definitely hear ya, JL. You're right, the cost of the RR ties are quite pricey and the quality of the RR ties from Lowe's and other places like that are crappy. Lowe's sells grade 3 RR ties which are all split and pretty much only good for landscaping. Yes, you could use 6x6 or 8x8 treated lumber but they are super costly. I purchased forty grade 1 RR ties that are of excellent quality directly from a man who gets them from the RR tracks. I had to travel about 70 minutes away to buy them. B/C I bought so many and got a military discount, they cost less than the price that Lowe's charges plus the ones I bought are hardly cracked and are heavy since they're saturated with creosote. I hope you can find someone who sells them in bulk and I hope you can get grade 1 RR ties since they're top-notch quality with few cracks and not punky from interior rot. Good luck finding some. I was down at the backstop range today making some slight sasfety modifications. It has gotten quite cooler than when I constructed the backstop and now's the time for some fun. Wondering how your setup is working a year later? Would you change anything? I have thought of doing one similar but had the thought of putting down one or 2 layers on the front to hold the sand in.
@Mtbambeno, so far the range has held up quite well. I don't throw as much lead down range as I thought I would but I made a few mods to the backstop to satisfy a few querks just for my liking. I did put 1 RR tie across the front to hold the clay-sand inside if it started to slide forward, however, it never-ever slid forward. Even with rain, the rain did not make the clay-sand break down and wash out. Overall, the build was a success and is still holding up. I need to do an update on many different projects to show viewers how several different builds I've done are still holding up well. Thanks much for asking and have a great week. 👍🏽🤠 04/16/24

Hey there Gary. I purchased 43 grade 1 railroad ties which had little-to-no splits. Nothing like the RR ties sold at Lowes. I purchased them from a guy who extracts them from the railroad lines and resells the good ties. I hope you don't do like I did and attempt to build while the weather is blisterin. I'd wait until it cools down a bit. Best to you on your build. Wear steel toe'd boots. You'll see why. 👍🏽🤠 7/28/23
@@houndsmanone4563 thank you for your response and No in the heat. I live in Florida and the heat index is over 100 with 100% humidity. I want real ties not the Lowe’s one. I’ll try this in the winter when it’s 70 and I don’t have steel toes for sure. I’m old so I’ll be slow at it.
Gary, that's a smart move to wait until it's much cooler outside. We're having extremely hot, humid, weather at this very moment and have been enduring this weather for several weeks now. I'm beyond tired of this miserable weather but you just gotta deal with what comes our way. I know what you mean when you mention being old. My wife and I are in our 70's and even the simplest of things is quite demanding on one's body. The steel toes are not a necessity but once a tie slips and crunches on your toes, your whole outlook will change. If you live near Miami, Florida try contacting Peltons' Nursery. They claim to have Grade 1 RR ties. I have no clue what they're selling a RR tie for but they should be in much better quality than the rotten ties sold at Lowe's stores. If you have a Sunbelt Rentals near you, you should be able to rent a 20foot dump trailer and even the large 16" Makita circular saw to cut the RR ries to length. You can even rent a lift, to help you raise the heavy RR ties into position. There are over 72 SunBelt Rentals in Florida and I guarantee they'll have what you need. Best to you, Gary. 👍🏽🤠 7/28/23

He said this would be easy, but equipment would be required and he has an account with Lowe’s, HD and Sunbelt. He said he would help and get the rentals too. I have a heavy duty trailer already. If you get a chance, check out Sun Belt Rentals in Brunswick, GA. They have lifts, tractors, and all kinds ofstuff to use. That's where I rented a 20 foot trailer to go buy my RR ties and I rented the big Makita circular saw to cut through my railroad ties. Best wishes to you in building your backstop. It sure would be nice if you could get an extra hand at building your backstop. Oh BTW, if you can buy a set of timber tongs, that will realy help you when lifting or dragging RR ties around.
