Generally, a sudden slap on the surface of a large body of water, such as that caused by a meteor impact or landslide will cause large tsunamis anywhere they hit. An earthquake in the middle of the ocean doesn't cause a large one initially, but one that increases in size exponentially as it approaches shore. A ship close to ground zero will hardly even notice something is going on, but as the wave approaches land, it will go up and up to a height of about 30 meters, which is huge although they can get higher depending on several factors. The Japanese tsunami reached a height of about 40 meters. The one that hit Indonesia in 2004 was only about 10 meters high (51 meters in spots) and killed over a quarter of a million people. Wave heights can get much, much higher with impact events though, approaching a couple of kilometers in height as they approach land. The Chicxulub Event, which hit in shallow water, caused a tsunami about 1500 meters high (about a mile). The landslide in Letuya Bay Alaska in 1954 caused a wave about 1700 feet high, and scoured both sides of the Bay almost completely clean. Tsunamis are neat...deadly, but neat.
