Can't believe that Allister thorn and Jorah Mormont were oil drillers

Tsunamis are not huge out in the ocean. They are underwater waves that only get huge when they come up on shore.
Relatively close to the shore. Waves made by your hand break close to the sand, normal beach waves a few meters out, big surfing waves a couple dozen meters out. A tsunami might build height and start breaking a hundred or so meters out. The movie hints at a possible extinction level event which a tsunami that big would start building and break a few kilometers out and sink the entire city and further which is what we are led to believe happened at the end.
"If Spider-Man actually got bit by a spider, he'd just have a spider bite"
That's you
Ever heard of rouge waves?
HOLY GUACAMOLE! THOSE SPORES MUST BE A THING IN REAL LIFE AS WELL!
Correct, but also no
Waves get exponentially big when they reach the shore, meaning those waves you saw would get even bigger.
An earthquake of 10 on the Richter scale could actually cause something like this, and since the movie is talking about world ending events, seems fair
"He drinks rubbing alcohol... no one knows what killed him."
lol
*burns most of internal organs*
"How did he die its so mysterious"

I guess everyone has a different “metabolism” because I've known some who have died from ingesting that, and it's a very well known 'carcinogenic'. Only meant for topical use.
@@maximomorales9563 You mean the liquid that has a freaking skull label in it isn't meant to be ingested? Who would have thought?
Generally, a sudden slap on the surface of a large body of water, such as that caused by a meteor impact or landslide will cause large tsunamis anywhere they hit. An earthquake in the middle of the ocean doesn't cause a large one initially, but one that increases in size exponentially as it approaches shore. A ship close to ground zero will hardly even notice something is going on, but as the wave approaches land, it will go up and up to a height of about 30 meters, which is huge although they can get higher depending on several factors. The Japanese tsunami reached a height of about 40 meters. The one that hit Indonesia in 2004 was only about 10 meters high (51 meters in spots) and killed over a quarter of a million people. Wave heights can get much, much higher with impact events though, approaching a couple of kilometers in height as they approach land. The Chicxulub Event, which hit in shallow water, caused a tsunami about 1500 meters high (about a mile). The landslide in Letuya Bay Alaska in 1954 caused a wave about 1700 feet high, and scoured both sides of the Bay almost completely clean. Tsunamis are neat...deadly, but neat.
The one that hit Indonesia killed nearly a quarter million people in all the affected areas!
@@marktwain2053 you are right! I don't know where I got the 100,000 plus! I'm going to edit it....thanks! Wow, just goes to show how powerful water is!
It's a pretty interesting effect on the resonance frequency of the wave. The large wave pushed on to the edge of the shore gains amplitude as it gets forced in to a smaller area.
As a Acehnese that lived -1km from the sea , I lost both my grandparents (grandpa still not found) from mom side, a cousin, an aunt and ofc countless friends and distance relatives in 2004, it still amazes me how some survived even though they can't swim, truly miracles. Luckily my family always visited my grandparents from dad side for the weekends in higher land else I reckon wouldn't have typed this comments. 😅
What's even more remarkable is how much we seems to "forget" about it, and suffer no trauma at all except the sadness for losing the loved one, I guess our brains got overloaded to process it all at once.
TL:DR 80% of my village died and some still missing caused by Tsunami.
@@SirZeck you've got a point. Saying tsunamis are 'neat' was insensitive and I apologize. I sincerely didn't mean it the way it sounded. I just wasn't paying attention when I wrote it. I should've said 'interesting', not 'neat', because that is definitely the wrong word. Sorry about that!!
I always hated the trope of “worker wants to shut it down but company rep says no because they’d be behind quota” firstly, the big wig would WANT to shut it down so they don’t blow up the rig and have to build millions of dollars worth of a new rig and be WAY behind, and two, the production manager would be more worried about falling behind most of the time. “We shut down the ones over pressure so we don’t fall TOO far behind” basically
Correct, the amount of extra oil you can extract in a few days is nothing compared to the cost of the rig itself.
As someone who works in the energy sector, it’s almost a universally adopted policy that any worker can shut work down if they spot something wrong or work not being done safely. All these tropes are just painful to watch.

You know, every time i see a plot about a group of people drilling a hole into the ground and unleashing some ancient creature or starting the apocalypse, it just reminds me of that hilarious bit in that South Park episode where the Oil company unleashed Cthulu on the moon and the apology video that followed XD

Just finished watching this. It's pretty cool. But I think they relied too heavily on the cliffhanger. They should have answered more questions and leave implied that something would happen to the coastline. It might not even get a second season and we'll be left with half a story.
But it's still quite entertaining. It felt like a Doctor Who episode without the Doctor. New life form that seems hostile but actually tries to protect the world. Good potential

Other poster's criticism of the Tsunami at the end is misleading: I have seen much bigger waves on the deep ocean when on a US Navy ship trying to outrun a typhoon. So you can have waves that size on the ocean without needing the drag of shallow water to make the wave effect. What I saw were more aptly described as 30 ft. walls of water coming over the bow.
I was on. board the USS Coral Sea CV-43 and we steamed thru hurricane Hugo, and I watched as waves crashed over the flight deck...
Those are storm swells, far different from a tsunami.
Terrifying!
@@OldNavyAirdale I was on a WWII era LST, the USS Tuscaloosa. It was sunk as target practice for Navy aviators in the early 1990s.
@@marktwain2053 Yes and no. What I saw in the review near the rig looked like a storm swell. And yes, a tsunami did hit land and killed Cat's wife. I think the movie conflated the two or at least the review did. And they are not entirely separated because there is this third thing called a storm surge.
The crew made me think the Night King was the threat.
