    Fruit needs to be cut in half before most critters will try it. They go for what they know. Yeah, one squirrel went for it!

      I can offer up apples, pears, raisins, peaches, avocados, tomatoes, green beans, squash etc, cut up into different sizes, but I never actually see squirrels eating anything I put out there other than peanuts! It's possible they eat some of it much later on, because it'll eventually disappear. But it could also be eaten by other animals!

    This is a really cute Video. I love to feed Squirrels as well. And the Chipmunks. I have one in particular I like very much. I named Him "Half-tail". Thus, half a tail. He does come on the deck(upper) and walk past the sliding door and looks for me. ~ I think you are a good person to love squirrels. ~ I can't tell you how many bags after bags of Peanuts they have enjoyed. I could have a Peanut Plantation!! :)

      Need a good video on mixing up feed they will eat. I bought Amazon’s best mix with the corn and sunflowers, and only picked out black sunflowers. I the bought 50lb of premium shelled unsalted peanuts and 25lb of unsalted shelled sunflowers (both are delicious and I have enjoyed eating them myself) but squirrels will not eat at all after mixing them together

    I enjoy feeding our wild squirrel too. I learned how to call her on UA-cam. She comes when I call, no matter where in the neighborhood she is, she comes. She eats peanuts out of my hand. For Christmas she got acorns, peanuts, almonds, walnuts (all in the shells so she can keep her teeth sharp and short). If I don't show up at the same time to feed her, she is so excited when she sees me that she reaches out to me with her hands. I'm afraid she's going to jump on my head.

      Please Can you direct me to some videos regarding how to call to squirrels, especially when one is putting out food for them. I've had several friendly visitors to my very small back garden in the past few recent years, including a frog/toad that was living in my pot plants n came out whenever I watered my pot plants, once it went indoors behind sofa without me knowing, and I had to rescue it, I've had a very clever hedgehog, that first started eating things on the ground that the birds knocked off the bird table, then I put out cat food for it every night, and it kept coming back every night for cat food, anyone reading this do not feed hedgehogs bread nor milk, these are extremely bad and dangerous for hedgehogs,and where I live there are always red kites, beautiful birds of prey, soaring around, but I've never seen one up close, if I were to put out joints of meat they might come closer, but I don't want to attract rats nor gliss gliss ( Severn sleepers to the Germans), so I've not put out meat for red kites but I know their call, several times I've had foxes both out the back and out the front, I don't have a front garden, and for about the last month I've had a squirrel in back garden, I'm just learning about squirrels, what they eat, nuts, seeds, fruit, etc, and the general sort of noises that they make, I can hear them in trees of neighbours, it's getting closer to me, I think because it knows I put out food for it, and it has quickly learnt that I am not a threat, squirrels are very intelligent animals, it would really help the squirrel if it knew some call from me signifying food.

    That's funny to me. I give my squirrels choices too. The younger ones are not to picky. Some of the older ones get picky. Just yesterday I put out some type of chips, and the younger squirrels ate them up. Rascal, one of the older ones looked at the chip, looked at me, and the look he had was, come on man, don't be holding out. I know you still have peanut butter and pistachios. So I had to dig out the nuts. I couldn't handle the looks what his looks were telling me, he knows how to get to me sometimes, but I'm slowly straightening him out using Pavlov's theory.

    On a recent hot day I had a squirrel laid out flat trying to keep cool. I threw some sliced kiwi near it and it reached over for it. I think they will go after what they need at the time. Most want the fats in peanuts. I have trouble with them accepting anything else I put out. But, they do seem to like kiwis and citrus. Apples, too.

  • @corporalturner
    @corporalturner 4 роки тому

    I think the reason they didn't take the fruit is you never put it in your hand and introduced it to them. They took the peanut because that how they remember that as something to eat when you started taming them.

    OK... my humor is getting the best of me here.
    Q. Have you ever in your life heard of anyone waking up, stretching, and, thinking of breakfast, saying, "Aaaah... I can't wait to have some loquats!"
    This is an earnest question. I mean. I have never heard of loquat cheesecake, or loquat sorbet, or ... loquat bread. Loquat Pie. Loquat Compote. (Say that ten times really fast without messing up :D).
    I have never heard of loquat flavored anything. Or loquat extract.
    But you know. "Even the smallest fruit can change the course of a compote." (Fellowsnip of the Things quote.)
    :)

  • @sandidandy72

    Never even heard of a loquat til just now! My squirrels love unsalted roasted peanuts, blackoil sunflower seeds, strawberries, apples, any nut in the shell, and as a special treat, peanut butter and micro greens. If I don’t feed them fast or often enough, they’ve learned to tear my screens and look indignant while also begging in my windowsills. I shouldn’t even bother calling them my squirrels anymore because I swear, one of them listed me as a local wildlife food pantry in the local paper and it turns out that lo and behold, I’m their human! It’s ok though. The joy I get from watching and interacting with them, the birds, and the occasional raccoon family is immense! I now where does one find a loquat? ❤️ 🐿

  • @joeschultz2

    The thing that is surprising is not so much that the squirrels preferred the peanuts to the loquat, it's that they ignored the loquat even when there was no peanut there. I thought animals in the wild had to grab for every morsel they could get. These guys were fussy as hell.

    • @MyBackyardBirding
      @MyBackyardBirding  10 років тому +4

      joeschultz2 I think its safe to say they are a bit spoiled. I see them eating loquats out of the tree and the few peanuts i give them supplement their diet - so maybe when they see me they want that peanut. The little buggers will take bites out of all my ripe Mangoes in the summer so I have to pick them green.

    I had a garden last year and I had a garden this year and each year my friendly little squirrels 5in Total eat my corn before they mature along with my sunflowers. so next year I am planting underground root veggies..
    I noticed that some of them mainly the older generation no how to eat chestnuts but the younger generation do not. I was giving them peanuts and I don't think that was doing them any justice because it was some teaching them how to take care of themselves. Right now they're buring all the peanuts and because they are territorial as soon as one buries their nuts the other one comes along and fix it up and steals it LOL these guys are quite the creatures that God gave us that's for sure
