My 70 DUSTER had a plow mount also.. rare option from DIRECT CONNECTION back in the 70's also had the salt spreader that hooked to bumper.. true story.
They are still out there! You never know what is hiding in basements and under tarps, just enough out of sight to stay a secret. Here in Georgia, there is plenty of treasures hiding in plain sight. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous rough gem!
If you can get past the greedy asses, people let stuff sit and rot suddenly it’s so valuable 😆 when you ask about it. They are out there though, me and a buddy are wanting to build a 70’s granny sleeper and smoke some posers.
I owned the 71 GY3 Sunroof Challenger R/T (from 1985-2017) that you mentioned at the end of this video that Tim Wellborn owned for a couple of years and that Mooars5150 bought earlier this year. I’m the guy in the pictures of that car’s photo resto album pointed out by Troy in the 5150 video. I had the restoration done on the car. It was a rust bucket when I first laid eyes on it in 1983. My friend bought it in Dekalb, IL in 1978. It belonged to a NIU student who lived in Glen Ellyn, IL. It had about 81,000 miles on it. The interior was in super nice condition and the car still has most of its original interior parts and pieces it was born with. The body not so much. John’s Body Shop in Nicollet, MN (near Mankato) restored the body and did the most extensive body resto done to a Mopar muscle car that had ever been done when it was finished in 1990. It was acid dipped, rebuilt on a body jig and had about half its sheet metal replaced. I used some primo used metal and some NOS pieces. The grill on it was NOS. I had the argent stripped off the grill and repainted it black. The way the back end of your subject R/T car is correct, but the tail light panel should be black. The way the black is painted under the tail lights and into the trunk is correct. It’s how I did mine myself. My sunroof car was loaded. It was ordered as a dealer demonstrator. It didn’t have the rare louvers or a wing, but it had lots of other options like 6 way, PW, PDB, AM/FM, cassette, wide grill surround molding, SE style trim that was part of the Challenger molding package. My car was a383, auto, A/C, 3:23 SG. It had its original drivetrain. The block was mis-stamped at the factory. One digit of the sequence number was wrong. The car had its BS and both tags. It had the hood blackout decal, but I decided to put on the white version because it looks better imo. My car was featured twice in Mopar Coll. Guide in about 2006 and late 2019. I love this 71 you featured. It’s going to need all the metal replaced except maybe the roof and cowl and radiator support. It won’t be cheap, but it will be a rare and very cool Challenger when it’s done. Love the way it is equipped!
Money wasn’t a object. She’s mine . Father had the one in front or rear on the production line . 340/4 speed to a GSD 451/4 speed . Moms was pregnant with me and I got to feel the monsters fury. His had the shaker hood option 6 pack
Another early build oddity, notice the 1970 only style trunk floor with the rear shock nut access hole located on the top. The mid 1971 and all later Challengers had the access holes coming in from the side/rear. My wife's December built 71 R/T Challenger has the 1970 style and my June built 1971 R/T Challenger has the later style.
I think this car was owned by my friend who lived in Chicago . Originally came from a car auction in detroit.if it is I drove it from Miami FL. To st louis.mo. in about 1973.. the car I drove had the 349 and rear aluminum window treatment. Also mark was a cb nut. Also the car had a cassette deck .maybe a booster. Marks father bought cars at auctions and resold them. He went to college in terre haute and moved to Chicago about 1972. Originally lived in Southfield Michigan. Mark used floor wax on the dash and door side panels which explains their condition. The car was in mint condition when I drive it from Florida. Super fast.thanks for your great article. Mike Retz .
Yeah it does suck that it was left outside to deteriorate, what a great car though. Found a 68 GT Mustang Fastback in the same condition. All original 390-4 speed car with everything in place just weathered away… tried to buy it but he didn’t want to entertain any offers. He was going to “fix” it up… same for a 69 Hemi GTX 4 speed car in my same town… rusted away and the owner wasn’t about to let it go. Great find 👍🏼
Love the color, I had a 1971 Duster in Curious Yellow (the Plymouth equivalent of Citron Yella). Sadly it was also a Chicago area car that rusted away.
When we were young and buying these cars and trucks for three grand. We had no idea they would be worth six figures today. Do you leave your new car outside parked in the driveway on the street. As a young man in the sixties and seventies. They were everywhere. Usually banged or jacked up. But they were driven and driven hard. It's amazing we survived. Big power, small brakes. Tube tires and Armstrong steering. It's amazing any of them survived. Rust for cars. Cancer for humans. Nothing last forever.
That's a cool one! Lots of nice options there. A bit interesting on the 70/71 fenders, I found a 70 Challenger that has a 730 last day of production SPD with one of each fender opposite of what you see here. I can't say for sure it was built that way but it is a pretty honest car and they appear original to it.
Rough for sure but thanks for amd everything can be saved, is it that rare/desirable that its woth it probably not but im sure there are some one who will love this car enough. This could be also the one i could afford and do by my self as project :)
A friend of mine has one('71 R/T) sitting under a lean too beside his shed, complete with same rear window louvres... it's in waaaay better shape than that one(no rust)..... but alas, he is "gonna do something with it one day" ? He asked me about redoing the Engine as that's my business Machining/Rebuilding Assembling and then Dyno'ing Engines... when I gave him a price he promptly put it back under the shed..... I guess he thinks he should still be able to do an Engine for the same $1200. as when he parked it in the 80's ?
There is a sweet 1970 Challenger R/T Top Banana 383/auto that the owner drives daily & parks on the street in front of his house, about a mile from my house here in Washington State. It is in far better condition than this one. I have not had the chance to meet the owner, not to try to buy it but just to talk about it. Even if it was for sale it would guaranteed be out of my price range.
G'day Ryan, What's going on buddy, I can't believe 1 mile from your place & you didn't know about it, that is unlike you. If you crunch the number's a full restoration would be awesome, but a full resto cost double to triple what the car will be worth. But it needs to be saved so what will you do if this was yours. Cheers Louis Kats 👍
@AutoArchaeology I'm curious to know how much your friend may be looking to get for the Challenger. The frame rails you said are rough shape. In his opinion would he say they are rebuildable or need to be replaced. Thank you for getting back to me
They are looking for 22k. The best course of action would be to replace them. They are readily available and easier in time/effort jut to replace then patch.
Not realistically or economically saveable- replace the hood, fenders, quarters, trunk lid and most of, or not the whole floor pan and trunk, what do you have left ??
There are people out there that make more money in a minute than you or I will in our entire life’s. Who cares how much a restoration cost- it’s about saving these cars because they don’t make them anymore.

I thought the 340 wasn't available in a 71 RT? Thought the 383 was the base engine? 🤔 cool car
340 was available in 71 R/T, and was actually more expensive then the 383
The cover saved the dash but trashed the rest of it. Would have been better off sitting with no tarp on it.
Yeah, pretty much
Love the color, I had a 1971 Duster in Curious Yellow (the Plymouth equivalent of Citron Yella). Sadly it was also a Chicago area car that rusted away.
I know of a Curious Yellow 71 340 Demon sitting north of here. Good looking color on those cars.
Boy gonna need some deep pockets to save that
There used to be a white rt at arnold motors in ames in the 90s. Really cool cars.
Beautiful car. I love Yellow And Black. Just. Why people leave car like this outside for 30 years?
We really don't know.

Will be cool to see this one get Restored. 😊
Fingers crossed!
22k ! Come on that leaves no room left to make it worth it !
Beautiful car! Looks like lemon twist paint? Listening at 04:17 am. A great vid to spontaneously wake up to.
It citron yellow, only for 1971 Models, I have a ‘71 GTX in this same color. As Plymouth was curious yellow.
I hope it gets a first class restoration. I'm a Shelby guy but always a soft spot for the Mopars old and also new.@@bigolow641
Tow bar brackets for the win!
Labor of love resto. My wife would give our 1st born for this car. 😂

You travel to Canada often ?
I do not, I need to get my passport.
If he would have put it inside a barn or building. Back in the day not many people could have imagine how these car would jump in value
Oh yeah, a little preventative maintenance would have done wonders for the car.
That's a beautiful car. That being said, the tarp has killed more cars than road salt.
Cool car. But, the metal work will be extensive.

Wow! Cool guy!
No R/T after 1971. Found a numbers matching 1972 340 Challenger. Would this be a Challenger Rallye?
Yes, that would be a Challenger Rallye in 72.
Повезло так повезло. С покупкой. А вот со сгнившей правой передней стойкой не повезло...
Thats a rebody at best. Does not look like the sheet metal is salvageable.
Nah, it can be saved.
Cool beans hope someone restores
Can you send information about the sale of this Challenger!
Owners info is in the description
Pretty highly optioned car, were the rear window louvers a pretty rare option for the 1971 Challengers?
They were
i hate when people have cars like this and they sit outside and rust away if you have a garage put the fuckin car inside tostay out of the weather k
I would've parked that car in my living room to protect it !
Looks like a c b radio slide mount under the dash
Yup, antenna mount in the trunk

If this was mine I would Joe dirt the hell out of this. Make it a daily driver just as it is.
7:26 - 70 and 71 fenders - how the hell can you tell? I see a notch over the inner headlight on the drivers side fender, is that it?
There are other small tells, but the notch is the big one.
Wondered the same thing
God it's rusted to s**t! I sort of doubt it's any kind of salvageable I'm sorry to say buddy.
Tarp is what sped up the rust process what a shame absolutely criminal
It would cost more to restore it than it would be worth restored?
No, such a rare car would still be worth restoring.
The near twin at the Elmer's Mecum auction in 2022 went for just under 70.
@@AutoArchaeology
It would cost that or more to restore this car.
Eh, I don't think that much. But it would be significant.
The car would never be worth the cost of a proper restoration

You said that it was an early built in November '71, then flashed "of 1969" across the screen. How was a '71 built in '69?
He probably meant '70.
Yeah, I meant 70 for 71
@@AutoArchaeology We got you. 😎
The door tag clearly says: 11/70.
@@AutoArchaeology I figured, just wanted to check.
AM I crazy or does that say 11 -72 I thought I heard it was a 71 Challenger?
Nope, definitely says 11-70 with the zero and a slash through it showing it isn't a letter 'O'
It must be a different door,11/72 would make it an early door off a 73 car.

What's next for the car???
next week is a 69 Charger R/T
I know where a blue r/t black rally stripe car 70-71 big block still won’t sell original owner just rotting away.
Ugh! What's the story on it?
Goofy wonder who put the led strips under dash and the led high beam lights those arent that old . must have been driven not that long ago..
What LEDs?
November 1970, not 69 I hope. Unless 1970 got deleted and passed over somehow.
No, I put the wrong date. It is Nov 70.
No logical way to fix this one. Good parts car though.
Huh
It's not rare it doesn't have the original motor it's a rust bucket Ford 340
Pull the 3:40 the rest of the car is junk it's people like you that keep driving the prices up
It does have the original engine, and it is a Dodge.
You said in the video the motor engine is out of a 70 Cuda so which is it original engine or out of a 70 Cuda it's in your video it's junk
I show the original engine to the car on the dolly at the end.
Time to restore to its former glory
Buy it for $10K and put $120k into it.
