  • In this heat transfer video lecture, we solve an example problem about the cooling of a steel ball. We demonstrate how to calculate the Biot number to determine if the lumped capacitance approximation will be valid. We then determine how to plot the ball's temperature as a function of time. We also demonstrate how to calculate the time required for the ball to reach a pre-determined temperature.

Is the numerator of ln term the initial of final temperature difference? The book I am using shows the numerator as the final temperature difference. Either way, thank you for this video!

What if the Biot Number is close to 1?

For one-dimensional transient conduction in flat walls, long cylinders, or spheres by surface convection, what dimensionless parameters can be used to simplify the representation of thermal conditions? How are these parameters defined? is it using biot number or theta?
