- Just a quick video showing a Cheap and pretty easy way a guy can change out old leaf spring bushing without a huge press or a bunch of hammering. The faithful ball joint press is pretty cheap and is a reliable way to make it happen.

Elizabeth is definitely a great assistant and a great life partner. God bless you both 🙏
I love the ‘Elizabeth Edition’ rider! Very funny. There’s an old saying; “Behind every great man is a great woman”. It’s very true. Ask my wife! 🤭🤣🤣
What a nice surprise to see you again this week! If we don't see you before, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.
ASSISTANT? I thought Elizabeth was the Shop Boss. Good work!
Rich people have designer tags on their clothes. Happy people have pet hair on theirs. I guess this also includes Collie hair! I really enjoy seeing you interact with your dogs. I was a two German Shepherd dog owner for many years, but I’m now owned by two little cats.
A great way to start the day two days in a row with Steve and the square body getting squared away
What a simply charming channel this is! Greetings from Dorset, UK!
Any assistant that's willing to handle Never-Seized coated hardware with bare hands is worth keeping! Hell, you should def consider a huge raise or at the very least a nice Christmas bonus! Really cool seeing Elizabeth helping you! Thanks for sharing and keep it up, you're making great progress!
I second that
Never seize is the greatest invention ever!
Chloe is a beautiful dog
Thanks to you and your charming assistant for the education and the unexpected Sunday treat.
Merry Christmas guys! Peace
She is a keeper for sure.
A rare Sunday Steve! Nice!
Hi Steve and Elizabeth! My dad liked cars a lot and he would be proud of me for watching this video! I just have to say that you two are a perfect couple!
Merry Christmas Steve and Elizabeth and the rest of your family. Two legged and Four legged
What's better than having a dog? Having 2 dogs hehe.Love them,you are happy :)
It's good to see two videos this week
Happy Sunday Steve and Elizabeth!
Thanks Steve! Great video as always. Love your dogs, Chloe is GORGEOUS.
Excited for the second video thanks
By far my favorite build so far. Thanks for sharing
A collie will have long hair, yet you can brush a Shelty twice a day and collect enough fur to make another dog each time. …and they shed constantly…..good thing I love my babies
Steve , after using polyurethan bushings for many years, you will find they will indeed always squeak no matter how much lube you install them with. I switched over to polygraphie bushing to help stop some of the squeaking from SPF as there the only company that sell them. Almost twice the money and even they sometimes squeak as well, but no ways near as bad as the standard polyurethan bushings. To be honest, I think next time I do a bushing job, I am going back to the old faithful rubber bushings for a street application. P/S glade you were out of the path of that tornado, was VERY worried about you in that mess.
I've been in the off road parts industry for 25 years. Rubber bushings are a pain to deal with but.. They do work the best. At least for a truck like this. Poly always squeaks. Always.
@@65BAJA my experience is the rubber lasts more miles than the poly and has a little better ride. Bronze bushings and grease fittings if you want to get fancy last the best. 🤠
I see that gallon of fluid fluid in the background, good choice!😎
Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed.🛻🛻🛻🛻🛻
Hi Steve, nice to see the old girl coming back to life, the truck that is 👍😬
If you stick a thick chisel in between the loop and the leaf it will spread the end loop and release the bushing such that the bushing can be tapped out and the new one can be also tapped in
Glad to see you guys are ok!!!!! Great video as usual!
Thanks Steve and Elizabeth for this 12 min bonus, stay healthy best wishes
Elizabeth is going to want her own shop one of these days, including tools, etc.
Next thing you know she'll start her own UA-cam channel!
Even the dawgs helped!
Marry that girl! Oh wait - you did. You're a lucky man!
Her name is Elizabeth not Mary lol
If you're planning on hauling with that truck a bag kit for that rear suspension would be a great upgrade. One of those things you wonder why you didn't do sooner in my case.
I pressed out bushings from a pair of link-arms using a welded-up square frame and a 5-ton jack. It worked, but was very dangerous as the frame was of high-tension steel from road-railings. Spring-hardened. The welding was not up to a decent standard at all.
It held up and did the job, but this was a bad proposition in hindsight.
Would a weld failed, I might had a deadly blow to my head in the doing, for the steel springed and got a lot of energy into it, before the bushings moved.
A good tip: When you tighten the spindle as hard as you dare, not damaging it, get it som blows from the hammer and check if the tension got lowered. Now re-tension the spindle and go further from this point. Just tensioning harder and harder might not work without some blows.
The shock from the blows often makes things moving without damageing the tool, witch on the other hand, over-tightening might do.
Morning Steve and Merry Christmas 🎅
Lol thanks for the early Christmas gift two in one weekend just made my Sunday
Really enjoyable series man,its nice to see somone not butcher this truck, your body work skills are impeccable..Plus you have the most soothing voice💯😎
You two are a great team. Merry Christmas to you an yours.
Thanks for the surprise showing with your assistant. Looking good. And the truck to. 😆.
Assistant? I saw the Chief Engineer, but no assistant Steve! Merry Christmas to you all.
Dean in Oxfordshire, UK.
Double feature for Christmas! Lol. Merry Christmas 🎄
Good
🇬🇧🙂
I wish Merry Christmas
Its going to be close to Brand new.
So Awesome.
Hiya Steve
Another Day in the Heaven $hop !!!
I’ve seen a video where you take a drill bit the diameter of the rubber and drill through in afew spots looked like it worked well too
Thanks Steve and Elizabeth for the "extra" video this week. It was great to see Chloe again. She may be a hair factory, but she sure is pretty! Happy Solstice from Thailand!
Hi Steve I enjoy your videos so much. Thanks for sharing you knowledge. I have a '76 K10 square body waiting for me in my workshop and your videos are absolutely the best training I could ask for. Best wishes for Christmas to you and yours. Hein Vosloo in Johannesburg South Africa.
What a treat to see you again my friend. The best part of doing this bad natured job is the end of it eh. You will be surprised at how much better the truck holds a line in the grove through the corners and the straights too. Good job done fella.
thanks for the info 👍
Great how to video Steve !!
Great content
Love the dogs, and the video Merry Christmas to you both...
Oh yes, you have to make sure you use the grease with them. Otherwise they WILL squeak. Don't ask me how I know that fact... Dogs are the best. You can see how, regardless of size, they both wanted your attention and love... But they make your lives so much more complete.
GOODTEAM WORK MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILY KIMBER
good video steve..merry christmas
Looks like Elizabeth may have pinched you just as you started the side by side scene. I noticed a little smile and a look on your face. Good stuff !
hola steve muy bueno quedaron los bujes . feliz navidad y año nuvo le deseo lo mejor saludos ariel de T.M.P
I wore out bushings like those on a Honda civic.
If I can remember, POR is the company that made coatings for the military back then. I do know it is expensive.
Steve, sorry sir, but anytime I see a youtube video title that includes "Cheap" or "Easy" I always pass it up because I am looking for the professional way of doing things. However, as a long time subscriber and fan, I can't miss your video. But again, not a fan of Cheap and Easy, but since its about leaf spring bushing removal, OK. Plus a second video in the same weekend! Yes. Your machinist fans are perfectionists down to the .0005". We don't do Cheap and Easy. Merry Christmas to you, Elizabeth and the family. God Bless.
Back in the day we used to burn them out. Then punch out the sleeve.
Spring cartridges can be a real pain. I'll need to do this on my FJ40 sometime in the future. The arch on the springs looks like new, but the bushings don't. I'll be using polyurethane on my as well. I bought some 20 years ago, or so, and they still look great.
Another super easy way is to drill out the rubber with a series of holes from a 3/16"-ish bit. Drill 4-8 holes and tap out the bushing. The outer sleeve will easily peel out with an air hammer or chisel.
Fire and an air chisel works too. The rubber is self removing with proper temps. 😎
@@bcbloc02 Yep😁 probably 75% of the ones I have removed have been that way. Its definitely a outdoor operation. I am always amazed at the amount of smoke.
👍
Unless they have improved the material on those Hazard Fraught ball joint presses, don't expect them to be successful every time. When I went to use mine it just spread that c-clamp like it was made of pewter.
Here we are again, pushing the envelope on spouse labor laws! 🤣🤣
Another enjoyable time at your shop, but what is that music track playing out? It took me ages to get it out of my head when you played it while out and about on your compressor video back at January 30, and now its stuck in again!
👍🇺🇲
Since this truck is gonna be doing some hard work for a long time, have you thought about boxing some/all of the frame? Even some light sheet to close it up (which you have proved you can handle well) would really boost the strength and durability, especially with some heavy paint/coating. More work, yes, but since you're into it already, maybe a path to take!
Boxed frames are very prone to rust out from the inside because they hold debris and trap water. I would not recommend it.
Steve it will ride like night and day with those polybushes they are great things! I'm a bit curious as to why you have put both bolts in before rolling the axle in place? Do your springs fit on top of the axle and not the other way around? I'm curious as the only 4x4 's I'm familiar with are Land Rovers and the axles sit on the springs normally. Cheers from the UK have a great Christmas ( I hate saying happy holidays as it's a Christian festival after all) and a Happy New Year we seen to be heading into yet another lock down in the next couple of weeks. So stay safe and keep well you all?
What brand are the boots ur assistant is wearing ?
Definitely not New York rust, here you would be lucky to save the spring.....Dave

Did any of those _magic words_ rhyme with *firetruck?* 🤷♂
Bushings?
The best paint for rusty metal is POR-15. That spray bomb doesn't compare.
its even worse if you have added a leaf or two.. then you have to compress them to get the holes to line up.
For those of us in the UK, Rustoleum, I think is the US equivalent of Hammerite (for some finihes)
Different products..but similar i guess..
Hammerite is awful stuff. Reacts with everything, including itself. I use Agco tractor paint on many things, professional product and works well.
@@retromechanicalengineer
i've looked at it..but never bothered to try it....hammerite....
I think most guys just go full cave man with a big hammer to remove bushings.
