- Some Kite Aerial Video shots of my little contribution to the "public flying" area at the St Anne's International Kite Festival, Sat 14th September 2024.
A lovely day but very windy, getting just a touch too windy with some exhibitors taking down their huge kites!
You did a great job there, Bill, especially in those conditions. What a fantastic beach that is, with plenty of room for everyone. I agree totally with you on the lack of "real" kites at most kite festivals these days. The big line laundry items appeal to non-kite people, but I'd far rather see more actual kites in the air. I guess you'll have some Trilobites in the air next weekend, weather permitting.
I was surprised by just how large the beach was myself! The "pro's" had several big areas roped off. There was even a digger to fill their enormous sand anchors.
A few fliers did take some of their kites down when the wind really picked up. Probably wise...
Indeed yes, if the weather is decent I'll be back at the Beach Park for the trilobite fly next weekend!
I meant to say... the event was scheduled to carry on to the Sunday as well. The wind was much lighter but it was pouring down with rain. All of the pro's had packed up and the only people on the beach were a few determined and hardy fliers! I thought better of it myself but did give them a round of applause for their efforts!!!
What an epic video. Thanks Bill for the fascinating aerial views of St Anne's. I didn't realise what a large event it was. Yes agree with your comment that any public viewing events have the expectation that the large show kites and sports display kites will dominate the event which is understandable for the publics enjoyment but sadly us single line traditional kite flyers are a dying breed, often left to fly in some far off corner of the field or beach. Trilobites rule the skies.
@@kiteflyingdownunder....car6272 Thanks, it was good fun. I couldn't have done it without the help of my partner, she was an essential assistant and kept a lookout whist I was flying the video rig.
It seemed pretty chaotic at times. I had a few close calls myself when kites came whizzing past us!
Bill, the aerial video is a testament to the wonderful corrective effect of a gimbal. I once sent up a video cam without stabilization and the footage would make a gull ill. I do wonder if St. Anne's is a mud, gravel or sandy beach. Which is it? Your kite choices in a rising wind were smart, even if the Bora might be a bit unpredictable and want to dive. Too bad about missing the night flight. There is a lot of money spent on each one and the display is magical. Appreciated.
Hi, The beach is a sandy one. Even though the surface was dry(ish) because of the very shallow gradient it was quite wet only a few inches down.
Bill.
Hi Bill, John here, kite flyer with disability. Too poorly to get to St. Anne's KF this year:(. However, your fab KAP brought it to me😊😊😊😀
Hi John, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video.
