World Trilobite Kite Fly Weekend 2024 #3 Irvine Beach Park
With the decent weather holding I thought I'd get one more session with some different trilobite kites. Due to me forgetting the flying lines this resulted in only two more getting into the air.
Been a great weekend flying! See you next year!

A dull day but a reasonable wind for flying my big trilobites kites. The park was quite quiet, probably due to the weather but I had a lot of visitors. With the winds getting gusty taking down one of the big trils was an adventure and a half! Hopefully get to fly on a sunny day eventually.

    Interesting to see the bag it came in. I have kites that came in the same type of bag and I have the Trilobite 10 &16 that came in a different type of bag but that are stamped the same way as the "original ones" sold at a local vendor. Actually I have 2 kites that came in bags of the type you show here. One is a Tadpole and one is a Ladybug. But show pretty instabile behaviour similar to your new Trilobite of the modern (mosaic) type...

    Flying in these conditions was the reward of the hardworking 😀 I have a brief question as I see you flying the 10, 16 and 36 (sqm but they all don't fulfill the sqm 😉 ). My 10 and 16 have some reinforcements sewed onto the nylon but it ends in the first seam and the front of the 3 chambers. The 64 of a friend has webbing going around all the chambers. Do you know which size is the first (smallest) one to have this reinforcement? 36, 45 or 64?

      @@_plinse Hi, despite having been almost "inside" the big kite when I've been packing it away on windy days, I haven't noticed any webbing re-enforement. However as many of my trilobites have come from different factories some are definitely better made than others! All I can say for sure is none of my larger kites have any webbing on the cells.

    Bill, the aerial video is a testament to the wonderful corrective effect of a gimbal. I once sent up a video cam without stabilization and the footage would make a gull ill. I do wonder if St. Anne's is a mud, gravel or sandy beach. Which is it? Your kite choices in a rising wind were smart, even if the Bora might be a bit unpredictable and want to dive. Too bad about missing the night flight. There is a lot of money spent on each one and the display is magical. Appreciated.

    Better luck next time, Bill! I don't like the various changes that people have made to the original Trilobite design. These all seem to be unauthorized rip-offs, and some are a weird combination of the Ma Trilobite and the old Peter Lynn line laundry version, which I've always disliked. I'm glad you got this one to fly better at the end, but it certainly doesn't look like a great performer.

    • @cloudybongo
      @cloudybongo 24 дні тому

      Yes, the "teeth" and eyes are very Peter Lynn! I see on AliExpress that there are now copies of the Peter Lynn trilobite. Not a fan of this type either! I wonder if these are made under license as some of his other stuff is? There is also another very subtle difference I noticed. The rear of the three cells were partially sewn shut. On my other bigger trils there are ties that can be used to close the cells to adjust for different winds. It might have been it was really just was too windy for the thing in it's configuration. The cells will be opened up too. I'm going to re-bridle the thing as well so all bases are coverd. I'll tame it some how, even if I have to put a drouge on it! It's all good fun

    What an epic video. Thanks Bill for the fascinating aerial views of St Anne's. I didn't realise what a large event it was. Yes agree with your comment that any public viewing events have the expectation that the large show kites and sports display kites will dominate the event which is understandable for the publics enjoyment but sadly us single line traditional kite flyers are a dying breed, often left to fly in some far off corner of the field or beach. Trilobites rule the skies.

    You did a great job there, Bill, especially in those conditions. What a fantastic beach that is, with plenty of room for everyone. I was surprised by just how large the beach was myself! The "pro's" had several big areas roped off. There was even a digger to fill their enormous sand anchors. Hi, I think I was overly cautious! I was using a nylon dual braided marine type rope 5mm in diameter. Don't know the actual kg pull but it was a lot! Couldn't pull the kite down directly, had to walk it down with a strap and pulley. The rope was rated 550kg.
