Jim, consider me a virtual friend from Chicago, who fell into this rabbit hole for a few years ago and came out the other side crushing on IU, where I found you… I’m going to give you some songs with varied styles you can enjoy… slightly outside the lane of what PK folks will recommend, both from Coke Studio ( featuring established artists) and Nescafé Basement - featuring underground and young artists mentored by Xulfi, the genius music producer who now heads Coke Studio. Get use to longer songs, with unconventional structures, which I haven’t seen since my youth in late 60s and 70s.
I agree, previous 13 seasons were amazing with contributions from so many amazing artists, but season 14 basically broke away from the past and carved out a new path for Coke Studio, even the visuals are not the same anymore.
Atiif singing in Urdu (older guy with beard) is a living legend, there maybe no other singer loved more in South Asia than Atif and that makes for more than billions fans. His vocal tone is just amazing but man he can stretch on every tone you should listen to some more of his songs I would recommend Tajdar-e-Haram. Abdullah who is still v young (21 has bright future ahead as he is young, creative, good vocals and great producer too, he was co producer on multiple CS14 songs.

Hey Jim, wow! I’m so touched that you have decided to venture into the whole season of Coke Studio’s 14th season. This is another favourite of mine as I mentioned earlier. I had no idea that you had a musical inclination yourself. No wonder I felt so connected with your reactions on Pakistani music. I didn’t know about your channel earlier but I keep looking out for more knowledge and how Pakistani music is perceived by others especially those who do not belong to this culture. For that part alone, you are doing a fantastic job👍😊. So the first guy whose voice you liked is Abdullah Siddiqui (pronounced uhb-duh-luh s-ih-dee-key) and he’s (I believe) 21 or 22 years old here. He was first discovered by Season 14’s musical genius producer Xulfi in another show, Nescafé Basement, when he was 18 years old. He sung his first all-original, English song there called Resistance. It is a pretty dope song if you ask me. He was born in Pakistan. I mention this because a lot of audience think that he must have been raised in States or something since he doesn’t have the typical Indian accent when he sings or speaks in English. But that’s just because he’s known English growing up as he started dwelling in creating and learning electronic pop music at the age of 11. So that’s just about it. Fun fact: he’s also the associate producer behind all songs of Season 14. He’s done an outstanding job with Xulfi to be honest. There’s another good song of his called “Kingdom” (for Cricket - the sport- lovers). He wanted this song to combine Urdu and English languages as a step forward with a techno twist because he understands how younger generations in Pakistan now have both English and Urdu spoken and understood as their main language. Urdu by the way is the national language of Pakistan. But you will also notice another predominant regional language in Coke Studio songs, which is Punjabi. It’s spoken both in Pakistan and India just with different dialects and script. Anyhow, the second guy is actually a seasoned and older singer. Atif Aslam is a household name in South Asia because of his vast body of work both in Pakistan and India. He has sung in many Bollywood (Indian) movies as well. So he’s loved universally. He has a unique voice too and he’s been around for decades now. I enjoyed how you got a huge smile on your face when the bridge came. You were like us initially like I don’t know where this will go but then you were like oh I get it now; this is how a song is done hehe. I was thoroughly amused by your expressions there. Yes, you are correct about the song preaching to be optimistic in life and to not give up. U show up every day to your job or whatever you are doing despite the obstacles because you are not weak… you work at it and take it one day at a time. That’s the essence of the song according to me. The pad/instrument that you had asked about is called an octapad. I am not sure how it is programmed but it’s pretty obvious in almost all the songs of this season. It’s pretty neat. The big guitar there that you saw is called Sitar and then initially when the camera enters into the musicians’ realm, you see the eastern instrument Sarangi. I am sure you must have witnessed the tabla there too along with other electronic drums. And a cello was visible towards the end too. I’m sorry I ramble a lot but this is how much I enjoy shedding light into our culture and to show the world that Pakistanis are not what news media portray them to be… I’m sure you will catch my drift there. Thanks again. I will wait for more reactions for sure. If you don’t know how to pronounce these names, don’t worry about it. But google is your best friend. Just type in the name one by one like say Abdullah pronunciation and you will find an audio clip for phonetics as well. All the best 😊👏 P.S. the most famous song of this season that went viral was Pasoori. A great song but I personally loved Ye Dunya, Phir Milenge, Go, Mehram and Kana Yaari more. I think Pasoori has like 200M+ views but I still gravitate towards other gems of the season over it. Kana Yaari is in Balochi language (another regional language of Pakistan from Balochistan province) but I’m sure you will dig it’s beat. Can’t wait to see your reaction on it too. P.S.S. U probably didn’t notice but the drummer from Karakoram band (Ye Dunya) was also the drummer in this song and in Peeche Hutt song. Similarly, the main lead singer of Karakoram band with that awesome growl towards the end of Ye Dunya song, Sherry Khattak, was also on the audio team with Xulfi and Abdullah and helped create the gems of this season. It’s like they all worked together with a greater purpose of making this season an invincible one and they sure did succeed in doing so 🤘

That touch pad like instrument is a LinnStrument, an expressive MIDI controller for musical performance. Unlike a standard MIDI keyboard, LinnStrument senses your fingers' subtle movements in five dimensions, enabling musical expression rivaling that of fine acoustic instruments. The instrument was devoped by Roger Linn who is an American designer of electronic musical instruments and equipment. He is the designer of the LM-1, the first drum machine to use samples, and the MPC sampler, which had a major influence on the development of hip hop. In late 2014, after several years of development, Linn released the LinnStrument

This song is surprising to you as do your reaction
this music is designed by Abdullah him self, the singer in song!
Nice reaction. The other noteworthy song from season 14 is Mehram. Please react to that, and my request Titliyan, Wohi Khuda Hai and Kadi Ao Ni. (You'll be able to see both singers you're now familiar with in these: Faisal Kapadia from Phir Milenge and Atif Aslam from this one Go. Both are in a class of their own here in Pakistan 👌🏼)
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Nice reaction bro
