    It’s sad not to see Honeybear anymore, but these two are wonderful additions! Adopting animals is so important. There are so many shelters, rescues, breed-specific rescues, just lots of options to rescue a new family member and find a good fit!

    As someone heavily involved in animal rescue, I FULLY support the message of foster before you adopt. I volunteer at a rescue that mostly handles Rabbits, and people don't realise how much work they are or what a niche pet they can be. I always recommend fostering over going straight into adopting so you get the full experience of having an animal with the support of an organisation behind you. We give you all the supplies you need, advice and pay for the vet care while they are in foster, as well as answer any questions you might have while the animal is in your care. If it turns out the animal your fostering isn't a good fit, you don't have to adopt. If you fall in love and can't live without this cute creature, you're then the first in line to adopt them as a forever pet. You're also helping out a rescue by fostering. I foster and it's a really rewarding experience even if you don't end up adopting the animal.

      rabbit fostering and adopting is very overlooked and an absolute joy if you have the right set up! Quite literally everyone I've talked to about rabbits think they're dull pets and have short life spans- they have no idea what they're missing!

    • @SeeSarahSaw
      @SeeSarahSaw Рік тому +5

      The rescue I got my dog from requires a trial period of at least two weeks in your home with all the necessary supplies provided (the time can be extended to a month if you choose) before making the adoption official and that's why I got her; The person in line ahead of me decided during their trial period that they actually weren't ready to adopt a dog so she went back to the rescue and they contacted me asking if I was still interested in doing a trial period. That was one year ago and she is currently curled up next to me, my official "dogter". ^_^ I think all rescues should require trial/foster periods tbh! We didn't connect when we first met but over those two weeks we quickly bonded and I realized she was the perfect doggie for me.

    Around the time Honeybear was diagnosed, my cat was also diagnosed with cancer, and he died from veterinary malpractice related to his care plan around the same time as Honeybear's passing. I feel the pain of doing EVERYTHING for your pet and it not being enough. I'm glad you were able to find the lovely Betty and give her a forever home; I got to do that for my Gidget, too, soon after my previous cat's passing. It feels good to keep passing on the love our animals give us by welcoming in a new critter when the time is right!
    ALSO: Dustin is the best scrungly boi.

      I'm so, so sorry to hear about your cat's passing. A year and a half ago, our cat died unexpectedly after a surgery to remove ear polyps, and it still feels like a giant hand is reaching into my chest and squeezing when I think about it. Losing a pet is always hard, but I never realized the additional pain that comes with a loss that happens in/after surgery. I'm so glad that Gidget has a new forever home with you 💜

    Couple things you should note in this video
    1. Do NOT think just because your dog is an emotional support dog that it is a service animal, it is NOT!! It does not have the same rights as a service animal. Do not try to take it to restaurants, airplanes, sporting venues, and anywhere else it is not allowed and try to sneak it in as a service animal. this actually hurts people who actually have, use, and need service animals.
    2. Rita is an amazing human!!

    • @kitchenandjorn
      @kitchenandjorn  Рік тому +86

      Yes! We mention emotional support animals and NOT service dogs for a very specific reason! Not the same thing! Legally and procedurally opposites! Night and day different! Tens of thousands of dollars in training different! We kinda trust our audience to listen to us when we use the specific words we do, but it's a good reminder.

    • @littleredbender
      @littleredbender Рік тому +24

      Also..."emotional support animal" isn't just a label for a pet you want to live with. It's a real thing that requires a mental health evaluation and typically a diagnosed condition that would benefit from the presence/emotional support of an animal. (written as both a mental health professional who writes ESA letters and as someone who has an ESA myself)

    • @kitchenandjorn
      @kitchenandjorn  Рік тому +23

      @@littleredbender yup, hence talking to your psychiatrist, as I mentioned in the video

    • @littleredbender
      @littleredbender Рік тому +13

      @@kitchenandjorn Yep :) I wasn't trying to imply you said anything incorrect. I just wanted to explain the process a bit more since myself and other therapists tend to run into situations where people thought a quick chat would guarantee them a letter for their pet. I've had people get really upset because they are under the impression ESA letters are just an on-demand thing that doesn't require an actual eval or that it's just a way to get out of paying pet rent and it's so much more than that. (Fun fact: people have tried to apply ESA letters to wild animals (such as bobcats) and that also doesn't fly lol)

    • @kitchenandjorn
      @kitchenandjorn  Рік тому +39

      @@littleredbenderyeah like TBH I actually have very strong opinions on gatekeeping any solutions (big or small, and this one is obviously small) that help dismantle racist and classist housing regulations like breed restrictions (which were created to target people of color and lower income people - ie people who can't afford expensive dogs) but I didn't get into that in this video and that's on me. But yeah: if you follow the procedure and your doctor agrees, I do think EVERYONE who qualifies and has a well-behaved animal should benefit from this and as many people should take advantage of this as possible. Like the idea that "some people might abuse the system" is a dog whistle (no pun intended) that is used to justify restrictions of aid and welfare across the board so when I hear it just kinda seems like a cop mentality to me (especially because most of the people I hear that phrasing from are... white) And that is today's opinion dump from Kristin which you didn't ask for but you are being reasonable and not a weirdo so here it is 😂

    thank you for bringing awareness to pitbulls. i have 3 dogs, one of which is my pitbull-lab. his name is nix and he is my emotional support animal. he's the sweetest and most emotionally intellegent dogs i have ever met. when i raise my voice, cry, or sound upset, he will jump on my lap and cuddle me. he doesn't leave my side when he knows i'm upset. pitbulls are amazing dogs. their breed is part of the nanny dog category of dogs, and i wish more people knew how truly amazing they are. he isn't a vocal dog at all and will never do anything to harm anyone, unless they are harming our family. i'm getting him registered as an actual support dog. so again, thank you so much. i plan on rescuing a cat soon, and i couldn't be prouder to say that almost every animal i've had is a rescue.

    I think it must be really hard to be a public figure with an animal. People get understandably emotional about animals and their care. I imagine it was hard enough to introduce honey bear and then have to find out she was ill, but how to handle that in a public lens must have been overwhelming.

    As a disabled 54 yr old we decided we aren't adopting anymore animals but when we move we will be fostering senior critters that are needing their Ohana until they meet the rainbow Bridge, I can't justify the commitment of getting a critter, in case something happens to me,and it end up in the system, we want to be part of the solution in the last half of our life. Thank you for your kindness. Rest in paradise. And please don't over abuse using emotional support animals, for those of us that use service animals, when people started using the emotional support loophole it made my life and those of a lot of truly disabled people life very difficult

    OMG, Betty and Dustin are the *cutest!* I'm so sorry to hear about Honeybear - losing a pet is always heartbreaking, and I completely understand why you didn't share the news here earlier. I'm really glad that you both found ways to welcome in new pets that worked for you, and I want to give both of your puppies all of the belly rubs and ear skritches in the world.
    Also, Jen, I completely feel you on being smitten with an animal at the shelter regardless of the health stuff. Our previous cat Sasha was an 8 year old tomcat with ear mites, an infected eye scratch, injuries from being attacked by a dog where they weren't sure how well they'd heal, and he'd only recently been neutered (which meant that he might have issues peeing indoors). None of it mattered to me, because I fell in love with him instantly, and I told my partner we needed to sign the adoption papers that day, so that no one else would adopt him over the weekend. The shelter folks humored us and gave us a 2-for-1 adoption special, since we were also adopting a cat who'd been there for over a year. (She didn't really like people; my partner loved the fact that she was independent.) We're not the most rational humans, but we enjoyed 12 fantastic years with those beautiful kitties.

I saw this 2-3 yo dog with broken teeth and heartworm, but my heart melted. We didn't get those puppies, but Fudge changed the minds of all of my and my husband's families about bully breeds. He was a goofy sweetheart, but he quickly developed a brain tumor that had him from being totally normal to quickly losing the use of him limbs and bowels in less than 2 weeks. Foster foster foster. Because even if a foster isn't a good fit for your family the information gained from that animal living in your home can help them find their forever home.
    The way an animal acts in a shelter environment is usually very different from how they're going to act at home. So getting that opportunity to live in a home environment with someone who was taking good care of them and showing them love can really bring out their personality and then if you decide that animal isn't a good fit for you, you can still give that information to the shelter so that they can better match that animal to another family. I typically specialize in neonates and critical care kittens and puppies which seems overwhelming to a lot of people but fosters are needed at every skill level and care level and animal type you can think of. Thank you so much Kristen and Jen for shouting out fostering!

    P.s. It's so awesome that Betty and Dustin are pals and willing to play with each other! Little cuties.

    Thank you SO much using your platform to advocate for adopting and fostering rescue animals! Shelter pets are so loving and resilient, even when the worst harm imaginable has happened to them. I have two rescue kitties and would never get a pet any other way.
    Also, Betty and Dustin are such good doggos. Pitties have the sweetest little faces, and it’s unfortunate that they still get such a negative stigma.

    Also, I'm so sorry about Honeybear. She seemed like such a big soft sweetie. I hope there is comfort in knowing that you provided her with a loving home and that she had humans that cared deeply about her. I'm sure it made a world of difference to her quality of life even if it didn't feel long enough.

    We adopted a little guy from a hoarding case. He had had mange and skin infections and just a crappy situation up until then. He and many of his sibling/cousin/parent? dogs were bald. I went and met him and he was a little stand-offish, my partner said that just means he needs us more than the outgoing dogs, so we got him. He promptly pooped in my car. Thanks little boy! We couldn't wait to see what he looked like when his fur grew back. Well, it never did, he has alopecia and is bald to this day but he is the sweetest, cutest, most neurotic dog you ever met and we are in love with him. If you are on the fence about getting a dog, just do it, your life will be richer for it.

    I recently rescued a dog as well. I live in the desert in a rural area, and found a puppy running around in my (very large) yard. So instead of putting her in a shelter, I kept her. Took her to the vet recently to start her vaccines and I got her chipped as well. Raising a puppy is kinda ruff, but we're getting there.

    I'll never forget the day we adopted one of our dogs. Back in 2021, my family had been looking into getting another dog for a few months, and there were a lot of arguments around the household. My siblings wanted to get a purebred golden retriever, and I was steadfast that we should adopt a rescue. They would say "it's a 75% chance the dog will be crazy from a shelter and a 25% chance it'll be crazy from a breeder" which made no sense to me, especially since we all grew up having adopted dogs in the first place and they've all been wonderful.
    Eventually, my mother agreed that it would be a better idea to adopt from the shelter, and we started looking. We checked websites daily, visited a few shelters, and my siblings were still wanting a dog that looked good or had no pittie in them. Meanwhile, my mom and I went into it with only a few goals: A) find a dog that does well with other dogs and cats, B) A dog that isn't a puppy, and C) A dog we connect with. And after a couple weeks of searching, we decided to check out a shelter while in town. The dog we were originally going to see had already been adopted, so we went out to check the other dogs and we saw this 9 month old hound/pittie mix named "Woozle" wiggling her butt at us through the kennel gate. We took her for a walk in the shelter yard and decided "yeah, this is the one" and "Woozle" became our lovely Darcy. My siblings still, sadly, favor our pure-bred dog, but my mom and I adore her (and spoil her rotten).

    They're both adorable! Also, thanks for sharing the different ways you got them. A lot of people don't know that fostering is a great way to see if a certain dog is the right fit for you/your family's situation & personalities, & if it isn't a good fit you've at least helped make a temporary space for another animal to be helped at the rescue & then you can switch to fostering a different one. Also since Jen already had a history with terriers growing up, she knew that breed was a good choice for her, so even though it was a more impulsive adoption she wasn't going in totally blind. ❤

One of them has turned out to be a pit mix and he is the sweetest, chonkiest baby and he has really opened our eyes to how precious bully breeds are. So glad Dustin and Betty are happy and healthy and in good homes now! 🩷

      Also want to add that while there are lots of dogs at shelters and rescues who are “easy” and already great with people and other dogs, there are also dogs who have more “issues” or behavioral challenges, but those dogs need homes too, and they’re extremely rewarding and loving and amazing in their own right! Always find a great trainer who both you and your dog vibe with ❤

    It's always hard to lose a beloved friend, even if you're prepared and know it's the best choice.
    Having been there a few times, I can testify that finding a new friend helps, not to mention giving them a home. Only three of my buddies were officially from a shelter but every one has been a rescue or born from a rescue mom. My current youngest was from a feral mom and born under my friends garden shed.

    Thank you SO much for sharing your doggo stories with us!!! I LOVE DOGS THEY ARE THE BEST. And also just fyi, Arizona has the same law about service dogs. If you have a letter from a doctor that your dog is needed for support reasons then they can't say no to your doggo. My husband is a real estate agent so I know for super sure, lol. Adopt and foster those perfect little shelter babies!! 🥰

    Never thought I'd find myself crying at a Kitchen&Jorn episode. I understand your pain with Honey Bear. My Mr. Moose had cancer. We went to Cornell several times after our own vets and even they could do nothing.The cancer spread too far too fast. He was almost 14. The money never mattered. Traumatic doesn't begin to describe the experience and loss. It's been 3 years and we still cry.

Also, pitties forever - my pup is a pitmix (staffy + also 25% american bulldog!) and she's the sweetest, gentlest, most loving baby in the world, as are literally every other pitt I've met.
