- The full guide to lithium leisure batteries! 🔋 I visited the AWS award-winning Bristol Caravans to get the down-low on this new and increasingly popular technology.
Many are deciding to replace their more traditional wet lead acid batteries in their motorhomes and campervans with lithium batteries, but with such a big investment, are they worth the costs involved?
Oakleigh breaks down the reasons you may choose lithium and all the steps involved, including replacing old batteries, solar charging, installation and the full costs involved.

Absolutely brilliant, very informative as well as easy to understand, well done thank you. Also, not a million miles away from me in Filton, so I'll be popping there soon.
Thank you very much, that's very kind. You certainly should! Oakleigh and the team are fantastic at what they do. You're also not far from us either, That Leisure Shop is in Hewish, on the A370 so pop in and say hi anytime.
6.5k you are having a laugh more like 2k
Really good explainer Matt 👍
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
Well explained but where they get £6.5k from god knows.
Hello, I also want to replace the batteries of my motorhome for a 300ah lithium. I bought the victron smart dc-dc 12v 30 amps. Can I connect the victron changer with the wires coming to my auxiliary batteries (by adding 60 amp fuse protection at the input to the output) now to my new lithium without modifying the old installation
I found that useful, thanks. Lithium batteries have a fire risk so something you don't want to mess with ?
Thank you for watching and commenting. Glad you found it useful. Are you going for a lithium upgrade?
Not sure yet just started looking into it as I need a new caravan battery apart from cost it's probably the future for all vans thanks
I think you might be right. Certainly wen costs come down further and no doubt the tech will improve too
if you had fitted victron kit you can login any where in the world
Thanks for a great explanation. It's becoming a but clearer for me. When you say lithium ion battery do you the Lifepo4 lithium iron phosphate battery? Thanks again.
They are indeed different sub types of battery. Lots of info on the differences and benefits of both online
Could you use an air fryer and a coffee machine off a large portable power bank like eco flow for the times the campsite has no electric hook ups? How long would a bank give you for an appliance like that?
We use our Power Oak to run a small Nespresso machine. Or we just plug the van into it! Ohms law will indicate how much time you can run for. Ours is a constant 2000w output and will happily make a dozen cups of coffee over a weekend easily! We are off to the outer Hebrides in the van and will take it with us. I’ll report back for sure
@@MotorhomeMatt look forward to hearing of your trip. We enjoyed our time there. Great gin at the distillery. They dive for seaweed right outside to give it its unique flavour.
@@LB-W wow! We will be visiting plus the whisky distillery! Looking forward to it
Matt how does this factor for habitation checks? Is lithium systems part of the checks? Are people that do habitation checks qualified to check lithium systems or is this something we should be getting an expert to look over if we have purchased a van that has not been converted by a big van brand.
I would definitely be doing some research prior to choosing a habitation check engineer or garage. Specialists should be aware of lithium checks to be carried out. A great starting place is the NCC Approved Workshop Scheme. They have over 500 service centres and mobile engineers registered with them
@@MotorhomeMatt a fantastic tip thank you. I did not know that.
How does something on a 13amp plug top use 150 amps when running? That makes no sense to me
Great report no lithium for me then cant justify when a solar battery is under a grand
Does solar work well for you? What difficulties have you found with it?
@@MotorhomeMatt ive a normal 105ah battery on moho never use ehu never run low.
I do have a bluetti eb70 as back up and ive plugged that direct to van once in winter to top up van battery.
People waste a lot of money on kit they dont need.
Love the channel
Purchased a 100ah lithium battery on ebay 179 euro. Renogy 50 amp dc to dc charger, solar charger in one about 239 euro , 430w domestic solar panel 120 euro . Another 30 euro for wire and fuses
Sorted
We already have charging from alternator to van battery and leisure batteries, I’m struggling to understand why a b2b charger is required?
I'm guessing you are currently charging your leisure batteries via either a split charge relay or a voltage sensing relay. If you have a Euro 6 engined van, (typically from 2015 onwards in the UK), then there is a possibility you will need a B2B charger, especially if your van has regenerative braking.
I have a 2012 Peugeot Boxer van. I can use a standard split charge or voltage sensing relay to recharge my leisure battery. However, my van's alternator only charges at 13.9v where my maintenance free leisure battery needs 14.2v. (A flooded leisure battery needs to be charged at 14.6v to fully charge it.)
I have a Sterling BB1260 b2b charger which boosts the charging voltage to 14.2v.
Different batteries require different charging profiles, which my Sterling b2b charger, as does the Victron b2b charger and others, allows me to set the charging profile to the leisure battery requirements. A SCR (split charge relay) or VSR (voltage sensing relay) can only charge the leisure battery with what the alternator puts out.
Charging Lithium needs a different charging profile yet again. A b2b charger with the ability to charge lithium can be set to accommodate its charging profile.
Do you need a b2b charger? No, as long as you don't draw much power from the battery before you are able to recharge it at home on your driveway with a 230v charger.
I use around 20 amps of power a day maximum. If I converted to lithium, then I would probably just use a 230v battery charger.
Lithium battery can take charge a lot faster than lead acid battery so it can burn out an alternator
Silly money. The sad thing is some people pay it
£760? for 100ah? Can get a 608ah for £1250 😂
Prices have certainly come down. I’m revisiting this topic very soon! Stay tuned
