I think the punishment should fit the intent, which was to injure the 1st baseman enough that he could be out for the season. Suspend the batter for the remainder of the season.

Manny Machado did this. Old school baseball had runner's step on the 1bman's foot if they had it on the bag instead of the side. There was an attitude that it didn't belong there as it was dangerous for the runner so they punished 1bmen to remind them.
No different than runner's sliding into fielder's who block a base with their foot or leg on a steal or play at that bag.

When I was 13, I had someone intentionally run over me when I played 1st base. I had my arm stretched out to catch the ball and the runner ran out of the baseline right into my arm. I had my arm shattered and to make things worse the ball hit me in the mouth and knocked out 6 teeth, busted my nose. I had to have a rod and screws put in my arm and a mouthful of fake teeth. The ump did call the runner out for leaving the baseline. He knew he was going to get out so he caused all of that to me for no reason. People like this should be suspended by the league for the rest of the season minimum. There is no reason for this stuff in kids baseball. It can change people lives for no reason whatsoever.

When I was in High School (waaaaaaaay back in the 70's) one of our players did that to the opposing 1st baseman on the last out of a game we lost by like 12 runs. This was about the fourth game of the season and the coach expelled him from the team for the rest of the season. No argument from administration, no push back from the dude's parents, no social outcry about "teachable moment". Different times.

Similar thing happened to me in little league but the umpires let it get way out of hand. I was playing 1st, kid was out by a mile, my foot was on the edge of the base... and the kid for some reason decided to plow into me and knocked me over, all the parents were yelling and screaming because of it. Umpire for some reason didn't throw the kid out of the game or even issue a warning. Later in the game, I'm pitching and of course I throw straight at the kid and hit him in the back. I also didn't get tossed from the game. Coaches, players, and parents start yelling at each other even more. Everyone calms down and we won game.

This is why I taught my 1st basemen to push of the bag as soon as you got the out. Much like the same way a pitcher explodes off the rubber. Doing so allows you to get out of harm's way quickly. Additionally some times you can steal an out on a bang bang play by pushing off slightly early if the ump isn't paying. All attention. All the ump really sees is your leg push off the bag as the runner is coming to it. So in his mind's eye you must have caught the ball prior.

    • @tcbowen12

I umpire and I listen for the ball to hit the glove while watching the runner's foot. I've caught FB trying to steal an out by pulling off too soon and costing themselves an out. If I see the FB pull off before I hear the ball hit the glove, I call the runner safe.

You knew (or should have known) when you started punching dude that you were going to at least, at the very least get thrown out of the game. I got in a fight at school and got no punishment at all because one of the staff members had seen what had happened (the other guy do something horrible to provoke me). And he got suspended.
So I'm not saying he's telling the truth or lying either, but if you go back 20+ years in the US a lot of this zero tolerance, punish everyone involved even if they were just defending themselves, BS didn't exist and at their discretion people could decide to not punish it lightly punish for things that today would be severely punished.
But I do agree with you, I was more a basketball player not a baseball player and if I had ever thrown down I would have expected at least a tech and more likely an ejection so I'd go in knowing that's probably what would happen.

This is beyond unsportsmanlike conduct! Brawl or retaliation, exactly what Antonelli said. This is one that makes the player, coach, parents, school, and town/city, look bad? When something like this occurs, the ejection should be the least of the punishment! He should be expelled from the team and ordered to attend anger management counciling.
He could have started an all out brawl, the coaches throwing blows, and a lot of unnecessary chaos.
If this would have been college, or professional level baseball, I can almost guarantee that this would have gotten messy. I've seen it a couple times, with intent, but this has to be the worse, blatant, and premeditated case that I have ever seen, in my 40 years of being involved with the game on evert level, except MLB. I would like to think, and believe the coach had no involvement in this isolated case, but he's the coach and he's ultimately in charge, and under his responsibility? I really don't think the coach new that he was going to do what he did? However, it all runs downhill.
    A great breakdown and explanation!

I was coaching a softball team called the Cardinals. We were suppose to be the under dogs. No one wanted this time because of that. Well I stepped up and said I’ll do it. Never coaching before but I had played and my oldest daughter is playing. I watched a lot of you tube softball drills about coaching, skills, and other important softball stuff. Well when a few ppl seen my team actually has what it takes to be a great team it was a fight to keep my team. Because then I became the underdog because I was on unfamiliar territory with people that had been together before I was kicked off the team for no reason my softball team cared about me so much as their coach. They stood up in the dugout and told everyone in front of their parents that they wanted me back as their head coach, I didn’t even mind not even being the head coach. I just wanted to be there to coach my girls because of jealousy and whatever else they decided that it was best not to have me as a coach. They said that because I was a new coach I possibly would not be able to get my team ready for games, I taught myself how to fast pitch at 40 years old. After that I taught three other girls how to fast pitch. I told the girls how to throw a ball as far as a man from outfield. I taught them a great way to field the ball into their glove and go straight into a step and throw. Now that there are three coaches on that one team when there was only one coach, those three coaches have ran my team into the ground. They continue to let a pitcher pitch that walks every player I’m not just saying that she literally has walked every player. The first game was 17 to 4. They finally switched out to one of the players that I taught how to pitch the last two innings that is win. The other team did not score again and we were able to score 4 points. I hate it for the team that I started they will forever be my Cardinals . But I’m stuck in a situation. I don’t know what to do because I feel if I could take this team back we still have a chance or do I do whatever what else has told me just give up you’re not getting paid for it. It wasn’t about getting paid for it. It was about the passion for the game and a passion for the team and the desire to give those players the passion as well. If they lose all season long, these girls are not going to feel like they are winners. I don’t know if you’ll answer me back or not should I let it go or should I go over the rec coordinators head and start getting answers on why the team was taken away from me to begin with? Also, it was a lot of your videos that I watched to teach my girls the skills that they know but the other coaches tried to tell them that that was the wrong way. I said I literally watched a pro baseball player do these things and coach these things and you’re gonna say he’s wrong they rolled her eyes at me

The injured player can legally win in civil court for medical and quality of life damages if a baseball player intentionally injures another player during a league game.
In general, intentional torts are civil wrongs that are committed intentionally and without legal justification. In the context of sports, an intentional tort can occur when a player intentionally injures another player. This type of injury can result in significant medical expenses and a loss of quality of life.
To win a civil case for intentional tort, the injured player must prove that the other player acted intentionally, that the other player's actions were the proximate cause of the injury, and that the injured player suffered actual damages. In the context of sports, it can be difficult to prove that a player acted intentionally. However, if there is clear evidence that the player intended to injure the other player, such as video footage or eyewitness testimony, then the injured player is more likely to succeed in their case.
If the injured player is successful in their case, they may be awarded damages to cover their medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. In some cases, the injured player may also be awarded punitive damages, which are designed to punish the other player for their reckless or malicious behavior.
It is important to note that the rules of each league may vary, so it is always best to consult with an attorney to determine if you have a case.

First of all, you cannot see if the 1b's leg is against the base or across it. 2nd of all, the runner isn't looking at the fielder's foot. 1bmen are taught to catch and then leave the bag immediately for this reason. Runners are focused on running through the bag. You can't read
minds. I'll trust that the Umpires had a clean look and judged that the runner should have avoided stepping where he did whether intentional or not.
