I changed my starter motor yesterday on my 2005 2.0 tdci after the solenoid gave up and it took less than an hour. All you have to do is remove the engine cover ,remove the battery and battery tray. I then had access to the starter mounting bolts. Undid them and wiggled the starter up past the coolant hose to the thermostat , disconnected the wiring to the solenoid ( the wiring has a lot of slack) and it was out. Fitting the new one was just as easy , just in reverse.

Great video mate. I did one yesterday but I did mine a slightly different way (not saying you did it wrong because everyone does things a different way) but the way I did it was without jacking the car up. I removed the battery and battery tray, undid the bracket and starter motor bolts, you can then slide the starter motor towards where the battery was, then turn it upwards (the radiator hose is slightly in the way but managed without removing it) you can them remove the 2 wire's bolted to the starter motor, there was plenty of length in the wire's to do this, then it comes quite easily out from the top. The only problem I had was, was that there was nothing wrong with the starter motor in the end lol! It's also not a bad earth to the engine or a knackered battery. Am gonna have another look tomorrow, I'm thinking maybe a fault with the ignition barrel. Fingers crossed. Great video though, keep up the good work😊

Thank you for making this video. I wanted to remove the starter from my car myself, but now I changed my mind. I'll order a tow truck, let it be done by an electrician at the service.

Thanks for the tutorial, I alsofound it easier to take out the N/S headlight, battery & tray, this gave me plenty of wiggle room to remove the old starter from the top.

+mrnatty122 It gets worse, the Dual Mass Flywheel is knackered so it's a gearbox out job. The Starter motor was just one of the symptoms as well as a knocking and rattling noise on tickover.. vids to follow.

Thank you so much - really helpful video.
Couple of additional comments. We struggled with the bolts holding the fan to the radiator - discovered that the fan housing is hung from them so they just need loosening. Access and visibility to the fan and starter motor are improved by taking out the headlights which is really easy to do.

Hi Martin whatever you do don't blow that starter motor out with the airline, maybe you know but clutch dust is one of the worst dusts get some of that in your lungs and it won't take much for you to suffer severely! Be careful with it on your hands too if you wipe your nose or something cause it's not normally this warm in Britain as you know so you'll do plenty of wiping you nose lol anyway happy birthday for the other day anyway! Have a good Christmas and new year will look forward to the future vids, great work keep it up!

+cabdriveruk Hi Jeff, i've been doing some research on this and it looks like I have a bigger problem. It looks like the Dual Mass Flywheel is shot. I have other symptoms like a grumbling sound at tickover which points to this. The starter motors fail and that's what's happened here.
Gotta think this one through as I don't have access to a ramp to get the gearbox out and it's an expensive fix. Nice just before Christmas.
      Cheers
      Martin

    • @cabdriveruk

+retrorestore Hi Martin, i have read and heard of people who had converted the dual mass flywheel to a solid flywheel and clutch plate with springs in it instead of being built into the flywheel on the dual mass one. It might be worth looking into this option as the dual mass mass flywheels are quite expensive and the next time you will only have to replace the clutch plate.
      Cheers Jeff.

    • @retrorestore

+b10xtn Haha, I've done quite a few jobs on this one but the Dual Mass Flywheel is a common problem on many cars but it's a good car as i've done quite a few of the jobs you can expect to do on a car covering 145,000 miles. It's all a learning curve as i've never had a front wheel drive gearbox out so it's a project i'm looking forward to.
