Ironically I was a developer back in the days when buying the game and now am a product owner in a streaming company and am shocked how difficult and time consuming things became when multiple teams are involved. I still think they've done and are doing a lot of this wrong, but I can see now, that it might be inevitable, especially with this size of a company.

So 12 years down the line and they don't have anything close to a working prototype of static server meshing, let alone dynamic server meshing. It's a make or break feature for the PU, and probably the hardest technical problem for the game. It should have been developed from the very beginning. I haven't even seen an in-principle explanation for how servers will be dynamically be allocated variable sized chunks of space to simulate (which is how they said they'd be doing it way back when). That is a SUPER hard architecture to engineer. If they went for an easier approach of using instances, you then have the problem of figuring out what to do with conflicting persistence data. I guess they are not sharing the basic implementation details because they still have nfi what they are.

For the first time I feel like all of this is actually possible. Weirdly server meshing was never the thing I was worried about - full persistence was. The fact that they managed to get everything in the game persisting without the entire backend dying over night from the massive amount of entities being stored is a huge relief. As big as I'm sure server meshing is, I feel like the hardest part is now behind them in terms of level of difficulty and massive unknowns. God speed you wonderful nerds.

CIG never should have done this episode of ISC. We should have received a much more transparent and tactical view of where we are and how long it will take to get sever meshing v1 / Pyro live. Vague, wishy washy, veiled (unpleasant) information is no way to treat stakeholders. This left me with many more questions than satisfactions. Anyone remember 2018 or the Pyro wormhole demo years ago? A lot of time has passed since those events and if PES was completely blocking Server Meshing work, we should have been informed. My perspective: I work for a well funded start-up that for its first two years was 100% remote. I participate in remote meetings 5 days a week with 30 to 150 collogues who reside in 5 different time zones across NA, EU and Asia. We have architected and launched a highly successful platform in over 15 global markets in the span of 3 years serving well over 20 million users. I know server meshing is difficult, but even hinting that remote work is a blocker or non-starter is nonsense.

What did we learn this week: that the focus on getting a second star system into the game is probably going to lead to a 1st implementation of meshing with only 2 servers. One for Stanton and one for pyro with the link being the jump point. They didn't say it explicitly but that's the impression I got. My feedback would be that I care a lot less about pyro than I do about actually getting some density within what ever play space we have.

Think of the amount of stuff we have in the whole if Stanton but populating just a planet or a moon. Now that's the kind of gameplay density I'm talking about and I'm looking forward to it way more than pyro.

thank you for the behind the scenes on PES and server meshing. Its clear that a lot of planning and thought needed to go into each to make them possible.
I also like the enthusiasm you gave to being in these meetings at the start. they should play that at the beginning of each meeting so everyone can 'think positive thoughts' about the whole meeting experience.
