This isn't the average ATLA fight. It seemed otherworldly. It was the fire nation at war with itself. Zuko representing the good inside the fire nation while azula represents the bitterness. Brother vs sister for the throne. Very very otherworldly and spectacular in every sense of the word
This is the most amazing music that could be possibly made for this scene. It's not your typical battle music. It's soft and quite, but in a way that makes it even more dramatic. Pure amazingness. Avatar: TLA will always be my favorite show.
There are two types of battle music...the ones that focus on the fighting itself (the faster ones) and those that focus on the meaning of the battle and the people involved (like this)
they could have easily put a high tempo, action-movie battle scene song. But they didn't. And I appreciate that so much. they know that if anything, this entire battle is heartbreaking. It's the culmination of hated, pity, anger, resentment, and so much more, brother against sister. this is honestly so incredible.
Now this fucking piece of music right here.... Did you know it was originally meant to be much more epic ? And by epic I mean louder and chaotic. But here, the way the sound is distributed makes from a really better track. I see it like this, the violin represents the conflict between Zuko and Azula, and the beats are their hearts/minds/souls. The higher pitched one is Azula's which goes for the attack and the lower one is Zuko's which is protecting Katara, because if you notice after 1:13, when Zuko is hit, that lower-pitch beat is no longer there. kinda odd to respond to 8 month old comment but i will do it anyways :D something terribile happend, a women broke, azula got insane. She lost controlled and she broke under the weight of herself. That once so controlled and intelligent women, that strong women broke and thats a tragedy, yes she was "evil" kinda, but her intelligence and strenght must be respected. I also like to see it not so black and white, yes she was evil but why, seems like because her mother left, she never has been loved, but mostly it seemed like she doesnt cared about it, or did she? maybe she did, maybe not, even the comcis dont deliver a clear answer.
I do have to agree with @Zombyyy !!! on this. She wasn't through and through evil, not like her dad was. She just wasn't able to receive and understand the love others had and gave so freely. Her own mother was unable to completely, truly love her and raise her right, even going so far [in Azula's mind] as loving Zuko "more" than her and just up and leaving them. Ozai never seemed to truly care either. He only wanted her to be his "perfect" firebending daughter, the one who was "worthy" to succeed him instead of Zuko. She was judged, critiqued every second of the day. She had to present the ideal image and, coupled with the lack of affection from her own family, she was left in a position where she had to be a "perfect", intelligent, always in control young woman. Which meant a degree of sociopathy, to put it mildly. But as we hear from others, she always was a bit scary. All of that, wrapped up into one person like it was, the pressures and betrayals of her choices, the "friends" she caused to turn away from her, her own father getting mad at her for her failures while demanding perfection, led to Azula having been warped and eventually breaking. I won't say that there wasn't already something in her that tended toward madness as it was implied in the show that there was but with a homelife like hers, no ******ing wonder.
Zombyyy !!! I agree with you completely, except that Azula was hardly a woman... She was only 14, which adds a whole other layer of emotion to her tragic downfall.
+Lukas Rivers But it's the showdown that was always meant to be! Still I agree and disagree with ya. I got the sad and terrible aspect, but not so much something that was never meant to happen. I got more that it was sad and terrible because it had to happen, there is no other path, this is something that has been building and has to be done.
This song feels the way Azula did during her descent into madness. It's calm at first then there's a building tension that gets blown out like a candle. To me this represents her psychopathic tendencies and incredible control. Then it gets loving in a very sad way before being immediately hit with a tinge of white rage. Like losing her mother. After that the song plays a more demented tune. She's a broken girl. That shrieking end is just the realization of that. That she was able to keep it together as long as she did is a testment to her incredible strength as a person.
I love the strings at 3:25. It conveys Azula's sanity slipping away in a way that's just so perfectly terrifying. To me, Azula going crazy parallels exactly what's happening to the Fire Nation as a whole. Sozin started the war with good, albeit warped, intentions, but in the end, Ozai's final solution was just pure madness. In this way, I think the whole story is a warning of how pursuing altruism through war and violence will only lead to destruction, and the good intentions you started with will end up being forgotten and corrupted.
K7 Lol fair point. Well I was referring to the flashbacks with Roku when he talks about wanting to “share” the Fire Nation’s greatness with the rest of the world. He started the war by first expanding into Earth Kingdom territory, then attacked the air nomads after Roku died to remove the threat of the Avatar. So that’s kind of my point, he starts off with the sincere belief he’s making the world better, but becomes so obsessed with it he ends up committing genocide.
@@DaBroski100 Yeah man, generational curses & sins of the father type stuff. So much deeper than I anticipated for what seemed like a cute little kids show in the very beginning. This is probably my favorite animated series of all time. And I didn't watch it until I was in college. The depth of the characters and storyline is incredible. I love layers. Builds authenticity and integrity to what's being told. Big fan.
Wow... you can even hear Azula's sanity slipping away in the background... That part was always a tearjerker for me. Sometimes, I question if my mother even actually cares for me...
Nickolie-psn Newell And yet, you don't even notice that I compared the attention (or lack thereof) I get from my mother to that of Azula's relationship with her mother.
Definitely one of my favorite scenes of the series. The music perfectly described the awesome emotion in that battle. Plus badass firebending is always good.
"I'll show you lightning!" Azula charges his energy and create lightning. Azula glare at Katara. Azula point its energy towards Katara. ~Slow motion begins~ ~best part of music~ Zuko jump out try to reach the lightning to catch it. He got zapped, and fails
One of my favourite bits of music from one of the best parts of the show. They built it up so well over the series and it had such an emotional payoff.
There is still running a cold sivher down my spine when i hear that music, the last duell between brother and sister, befor she gets totaly insane. such feels. i fucking loved both in the series, soku and azula, in the last episodes how they showed how azual gets insane is just so fucking well made, its fantastic. its so awesome and so sad. Really on the best moments of the whole series is when azula gets tied up by katara and she laughs and cries and spites fire, such an awesome moment, in some kind of way
Just watched the finale, this fight was amazing. I love the music and how it wasn't super fast-paced. I do kind of wish Zuko was the one to beat Azula, not Katara though
She was never concerned about her father's love. It was the betrayal of her "friends", realizing that she no longer had control over them that pushed her over the edge...
Azula was affirmed by her father for her talents in contrast to how Zuko was treated poorly for his lack of utility to Ozai. She quickly became the perfect instrument of warfare in hopes that her father would continually love her, namely since she was convinced her mother never loved her. Her whole entire complex is that relationships based in trust and friendship are faulty and that fear and respect are proper and reliable. Her fall into insanity starts when she realizes that even she, the child of near perfection (referencing the scene where she shoots lightning and has one hair out of place) is actually quite incapable of preparing herself for her coronation without the help of others. However, since the only relationship she can rely on is now her father she banishes all others. In the mirror she sees her mother and this quest for genuine unconditional love haunts her. Her defeat at the last Agni Kai is her lowest moment in which frustrated and saddened she is unable to act and will certainly be shamed by her father.
Duck Soup I don’t deny that the Tai Lee and Mai incident was the trigger for her trauma and insanity, but their is a huge subtle characterization to Azula and her parents. If you remember at Ember Island, the place that smoothes out your character imbalances, she replies somewhat jokingly, “My own mother thought I was a monster... she was RIGHT of course but it still hurt.” Clearly Azula has a trust issue stemming from the fickle home environment she was raised in. And to use the song in conjunction with the fights visuals and along with all the narrative and thematic backing. Azula and Zuko are parallel to one another. Zuko obviously has his complex with seeking his father’s love that was “taken” from him, rather than the “honor” which he believed to be a prerequisite for. I don’t think its far fetched to infer that similar conditions apply to Azula who was aptly named by her father to appeal to his own father Azulon to correct the “failure” that was prince Zuko. Azula can’t fail, she shouldn’t fail. She is the product of heavily militarization, and her existence is relegated to her performance. The motivation for her perfection is unconditional love in the same vein that Zuko is searching for the avatar to reclaim his right to it.
Normally fight scenes have exciting music and have witty dialogue etc. But the fight scene between Zuko and Azula was just tragic and emotional. The way you can only hear the sad but beautiful music makes it so emotional. This isn’t just any fight. This is the end. A brother and sister, now driven apart by war.
Ok i couldnt be the only one who watched this more than ones :D and not only because nickelodeon always started at the beginning after a few new episodes xD
This is just an absolute masterpiece. The almost silent tension as the fight starts. The powerful percussion. Azula's madness in the haunting vocals. Such an amazing piece of music to support such an incredible moment in the series. I can listen to this every day.
Oh my god. I love this song. It so perfectly illustrates the emotion going on between a brother and sister fighting to the death, essentially. Zuko is forced to watch her sister have a total mental breakdown and the music is perfect for it.
so solemn and epic and tense and heartrending, you can hear all the emotion in this piece even without the incredible fight scenes to go with it. ATLA is probably the best most intelligent and amazing cartoons of all time
i loved the way they portrayed zuko and azula's fight. unfortunately Iroh's insight came to be fulfilled. as he said " a brother fighting a brother to gain power". i can't imagine fighting my siblings with the intensity that they did.
This fight is so emotional. A brother and sister battling to the DEATH for the throne. The fact that it came to that was so horrible. But, going into the fight, we didn't know if either of them were going to survive. They were prepared to kill their own family.
I can just imagine that totally mesmerizing sequence of Azula and Zuko masterfully battling it out with their heightened powers. There was such ferocity there, but it was also harmonious and filled with life energy, nothing short of beautiful.
I think i must have been 11. My sisters and i were at my grandmas house. Upstairs with a bowl of poped corn and eating cookies. Watching on the edge of our seats as Avatar the Last Airbender series finalie debued in a four part special. We were all crying as it concluded. It was the first cartoon i had seen that told a story. And a damn good one at that. Avatar is the reason i love anime and my art. It started me down that path. And one day i hope to write a story like this. If it comes out half as good as avatar, ill be satisfied
I concur, truly a work for all ages. ^^ Speaking of "reflection on real world religion[s]," Iroh gave me the impression of a Zen master. He particularly seemed so when he--to paraphrase--taught Aang that it was stronger to stay in the now and live with desire than to flee from it.
Most people don't understand how much music impacts a story. Seriously, if you watched Avatar without the score, it wouldn't be nearly as incredible, at least not to me. The composer did an astounding job, and I love them.
My aunt loved this show . Because of the use of tai chi for the water benders , and Kung fu , and many others . And she also likes it for the amount of action it has .
Be decision of phoenix king ozai now i can make you fire lord.. What are you waiting for do it Sorry but you not come to be fire lord. I am Hahaha you are hilarious And you are going down Wait . You want to be fire lord fine lets lettle this . Just you and me brother the showdown that was always went to be agni kai You are on What are you doing she is play in you she know she can't us both so she tries to separate us I know . But i can take her this time But even you admitted to your uncle that you are need a help in facing azula There is something about her i can't explain it when she slipping in this way no one else has to get heart I am sorry it has to end this way brother No you are not
I'd say it's THE BEST kids' show ever made, and also one of the top animated series of all time. I recently became an anime fan and watched Fullmetal Alchemist and Code Geass one after the other, followed by The Last Airbender. I'd say TLA is on par with both FMA and CG.
even though it is a highly rated show for people who know about it, i still think that avatar is so so underrated. everything about it from the animation to the story/characters to the music makes it (in my opinion) one of the best shows of all time. and i don't mean just kids shows
when i heard this the first time i was like...."seriously? that boring thing is for the final Agni Kai?" but after watching the whole series and getting into the story, the drama and the characters including Azula......i understood and even felt it was the perfect soundtrack, and now i even like it
I'm serious, I will watch Avatar every year for the rest of my life. When this fight happens, I AM READY TO BECOME KATARA! I feel like this is one of if not the best song in one of the best series to ever come out. Last Agni Kai is very emotional and the fight scenes are cinematically amazing. When Zuko and Azula are fighting, I loved how the creators of the show blocked out the sound of the fight and numb it with the music. I also get feels when Zuko takes in the lightning and Katara has to fight Azula. When Azula started crying, that's when I knew what was going to happen. Avatar The Last Airbender is by far my most favorite, would recommend T.V. show and the series, in general, wants you to learn from it. There are many story arcs, like Zuko's Redemption and The Cycle of War through Katara and Aang, that can really let you see different views. Live long and prosper, ATLA! You deserved it for bringing out the most beloved characters in cinematic history.
Dear Mike and Bryan, or Nickelodeon, or whoever... PLEASE pleasepleaseplease release this amazingly epic soundtrack in stores. I will give you all of my money.

i loved the way they portrayed zuko and azula's fight. unfortunately Iroh's insight came to be fulfilled. as he said " a brother fighting a brother to gain power".
i can't imagine fighting my siblings with the intensity that they did.
The Music made the Series emotional and something so special for my childhood !
This fight is so emotional. A brother and sister battling to the DEATH for the throne. The fact that it came to that was so horrible. But, going into the fight, we didn't know if either of them were going to survive. They were prepared to kill their own family.
This was my favorite song in the whole series. It made me cry.
I can just imagine that totally mesmerizing sequence of Azula and Zuko masterfully battling it out with their heightened powers. There was such ferocity there, but it was also harmonious and filled with life energy, nothing short of beautiful.
I couldn't agree more. I've tried to find a show that I thought was better and I haven't. I believe it will always be my favorite.
this music gives me shivers down my spine. It is so good! The scene is my favourite in the show :D
The best show in the world. PERIOD! Music is everything. I agree with you.
I want to watch it all over again...
I concur, truly a work for all ages. ^^ Speaking of "reflection on real world religion[s]," Iroh gave me the impression of a Zen master. He particularly seemed so when he--to paraphrase--taught Aang that it was stronger to stay in the now and live with desire than to flee from it.
Brother and Sister, fighting for control over the Throne. Amazing scene. Always will be.
It gives me goosebumps every time
i love the whole series but i like book three the most. the second half of it is full of so much emotion.. will forever be my favorite show
Most people don't understand how much music impacts a story. Seriously, if you watched Avatar without the score, it wouldn't be nearly as incredible, at least not to me. The composer did an astounding job, and I love them.
I felt it! I was reading Avatar: The Promise and chills came from this theme. Very powerful, magical, and Defiant
Late but I completely agree the music made the show so much more beautiful it was so key to its whole culture.
legends say, people who didn't watch atla have a special spot on their spirit that will always stay cold
3:20 onwards gives me freaking goosebumps.
"no lightning today afraid i redirect it?"
"I SHOW YOU LIGHTNING!!!!"
Fire vs Fire. Only the strongest will win. Or will they?
Don't forget to add lightning and water. XD
God, every bit of this theme fit perfectly with the best fight in the show
My aunt loved this show . Because of the use of tai chi for the water benders , and Kung fu , and many others . And she also likes it for the amount of action it has .
Goosebumps and chillz

I'd say it's THE BEST kids' show ever made, and also one of the top animated series of all time. I recently became an anime fan and watched Fullmetal Alchemist and Code Geass one after the other, followed by The Last Airbender. I'd say TLA is on par with both FMA and CG.
-To belong. That's true and it's very sad but that's what makes the series legendary.....it goes there.
awesome that you have azula's theme from about halfway in - very menacing!
even though it is a highly rated show for people who know about it, i still think that avatar is so so underrated. everything about it from the animation to the story/characters to the music makes it (in my opinion) one of the best shows of all time. and i don't mean just kids shows
when i heard this the first time i was like...."seriously? that boring thing is for the final Agni Kai?" but after watching the whole series and getting into the story, the drama and the characters including Azula......i understood and even felt it was the perfect soundtrack, and now i even like it
Some Guy: Hello, how much fuel do you want for your blue fire blowtorch?
Azula: Yes
This show made my life what it is now
1:26 Azula’s final act of deception
I miss The Last Airbender. I am still waiting Season 4 :'(
Dude. There have been comics. There is a sequel series. Go watch and read it if you know what's good for you.
Batuhan XL
I assure you, there's never gonna be a season 4.
are you not watching Legend of Korra?
As a matter of fact, he's not.
Batuhan XL
the comics answer what happens to zuko's mom. Spoilers. It has feels.
Also korra. watch. now
So beautiful, the fight didn't even have sound effects until the end.
this track is so meaningful and so heartbreaking
