@Mark Five What I meant by heavy metal was stuff like judas priest, iron maiden, ozzy osbourne, deep purple, etc. Just the standard heavy metal stuff.
@Mark Five let's agree to disagree
1) Thrash Metal
2) Traditional Heavy Metal
3) Death Metal
4) Speed Metal
5) NWOBHM
6) Doom Metal
7) Progressive Metal
8) Groove Metal
9) Power Metal
10) Black Metal
1. Progressive Metal
Prog has some of the best songwriting in all of metal and is overall a lot more interesting and diverse than any other genre to me. I honestly don't know why I enjoy it so much.
My favorites are Dream Theater, Haken, Gojira, Devin Townsend and BTBAM.
2. Death metal
I'm not a huge fan of traditional death metal, such as Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel (With exceptions, of course) However, Melodic Death Metal which I'm including in this, is fantastic and has a lot of great bands.
My favorites are Death, Opeth, Ne Obliviscaris, Insomnium, and Amon Amarth.
3. Black metal
This is a genre that's grown on me a lot for the past few months and I've been getting into more and more bands throughout, with more to come, hopefully. It's a very interesting genre which manages to create an atmosphere like no other.
My favorites are Emperor, Behemoth, Mayhem, Deafheaven and Alcest.
4. Thrash metal
While not my go-to for listening, I still enjoy it a lot and respect its influence on metal as a whole.
My favorites are Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Sodom.
5. Power Metal
I don't listen to it as much as I once used to, but it played a big part in introducing me to metal as a whole, which I am very grateful for.
My favorites are Sabaton, Powerwolf and Sonata Arctica.
My list,
1-death metal
2-thrash metal
3-black metal
4-doom metal
5-folk/Viking metal
6-heavy metal
7-death doom
8-prog metal

Viking metal is so underrated!
@@jabrane1564 Word. It can include Folk, Death and Black Metal into it's songwriting. 👍

Those are the only subgenres of metal imo. Everything else can fit under one of these.
Groove metal?
@@spamsingles5948 yeah groove metal could fit under any of these genres. Groove metal is essentially slower thrash metal with groovier riffs. There are also many death metal and black metal bands who have groovy af albums/songs
And Groove tends to incorporate many of the genres listed into their songs.

Lol! Every record store (remember those?) should have a "Good Metal" section. xD

Uh... no. Slam has its roots in early 90s DM like Suffocation and Devourment.
your interpretation is a bit uncharitable. sure, his choice of words is wrong, but i think he's saying that metalcore and deathcore led to the creation of new bands and helped popularize the use of slam riffs, not that it "gave birth" to it.

I was really expecting traditional heavy metal to be at the top, but with it essentially being broken down into Doom and NWBHO, this was a really respectable list. I definitely knew thrash would be in your top 2 as it is for me.

You need experimental and avant-garde metal in your life
@@MoSweiti666 shit like deathspell omega can go under prog I think
I see you're a Core hater. Metalcore is great, you just got the wrong taste of it. If you like Death, Thrash, Prog and Power then you just can't dislike Metalcore. Give it a little attention, avoid the Crabcore bands (scene stuff, edgy teenager stuff) and you might find yourself a Metalcore fan. I'm a Death and Black Metal guy but I recommend you give Metalcore a deeper try.
The Metalcore starter pack goes like this... (at least in my opinion):
Parkway Drive - Very clear Death Metal influences, heavy stuff.
As I Lay Dying - Melodic Death influences, pretty heavy too.
Killswitch Engage - Melodic, Emotional stuff (not lovey dovey necessarily).
Hatebreed - Straight up Hardcore Punk with Metal elements.
Trivium - First albums are pretty Thrash Influenced
Dive even deeper? Try Deathcore. That's where the real heavy shit kicks in. Very Black, Doom, and Death Metal influenced sub genre of Metalcore.
Keep in mind that I'm not even close of being a Metalcore genius, even worse, I'm as average as it gets. In fact, all the shit I listed above you probably already know/heard of already so yeah. But give it a try. VERY important thing... do not compare it to Extreme Metal because you'll find yourself under the... "why would I listen to this when Death is way heavier... why would I listen to this when Black is more evil or atmospheric... etc" and you'll miss the essence of it.
1. Traditional Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin)
2. New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Saxon, Diamond Head)
3. Thrash Metal (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament)
4. Power Metal (Manowar, Blind Guardian, Angra)
5. Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche)
6. Symphonic Metal (Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica)
7. Doom Metal (Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Candlemass)
8. Death Metal (Death, Possessed, Morbid Angel)
9. Metalcore (Killswitch Engage, Bullet for my Valentine, Trivium)
10. Nu Metal (Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park)
1) Sludge
2) Doom
3) Stoner
4) Prog
5) Death
6) Grindcore
7) Thrash
8) Metalcore
9) Hardcore
10) Deathcore
Interesting take. In terms of importance, you really have to go by historical progression, since one genre generally leads to another. Also the earlier genres tended to have way more scope and variety in their sounds. There have been periods that seem to have been filled with copycat bands that all sounded much the same...although that has changed over the last 10-15 years, as bands have got more experimental again. My personal list would look something like:
1. Classic / NWOBHM
2. Thrash
3. Progressive
4. Symphonic
5. Power
6. Doom / Stoner
7. Nu
8. Death

(2) Black Metal : This and Death Metal switch places on a frequent basis depending on the mood. (3) Death-Doom : Disembowelment, Swallow the Sun, Katatonia (early), Asphyx, My Dying Bride (early), Anathema (early), Amorphis (early), Forgotten Tomb, Draconian, etc.
(4) Progressive Metal : Opeth, Agalloch, Wilderun (first record), and Edge of Sanity
(5) Thrash Metal : Annihilator, Overkill, and Celtic Frost. I dig a handful of songs from other bands too.
(6) Melodic Death Metal : Be'Lakor, Insomnium, Kalmah, Dark Tranquillity (early), Wintersun, Ensiferum, Unanimated, etc.
(7) Power Metal : I haven't explored the genre much, but have listened to multifarious records from it, and still listen to them occasionally. Somewhere Far Beyond (Blind Guardian), Theatre of Salvation (Edguy), Episode (Stratovarius), Heading for Tomorrow (Gamma Ray). The aforementioned records have lasted in my memory for a longer period of time.

This is just my personal taste, no regard for objectivity whatsoever. And I tried to narrow it down to ten by combing some together. The first ones, seperated by an "&", are different in my opinion, but similar enough in several instances to be put together. The rest, with the "/", I would put as just a sub-genre of metal with another includable subgenre on its own which I want to mention.
