More Context from LCDR Charlie, about the way the crews operate:
Another takeaway is always prepare for the worst. We carry everything we need for survival on our body during flights in our vests. In a true ditching scenario there isn't time to grab a bag from the back of the aircraft with your gear. Often times it won't be there after the impact of the crash. You will need to survive with just what you have on you. For any remote or over water flying having a vest with some basic survival gear and communications equipment will save your life.

    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

It was so awesome getting to meet and become friends with these guys over the past year. Made every long night of editing in my UA-cam career worth it. I owe it to them to fly them out to the Bahamas in the Caravan to show them my side of aviation and as a thank you for everything they did for us.

Really great video collaboration Steve. As I said above, no matter what service SAR crews are from, it's amazing what they do. When I was in the Navy, I worked on UH-1N's in a SAR squadron. These men & women are dedicated to saving peoples lives and do a great job. Makes me want to go join the Coast Guard and jump out of helicopters! Thanks again for this video and all your videos.

This is definitely boots on the (water) life or death. Jumping in the water (ocean) to save someone takes enormous amount of courage and skill and only .5% of the population has that skill. Thank god for the coast guard. RESPECT...

Steve, I do not understand why this video does not have like 150,000+ views? Anyone who flies should be watching this one, especially if they fly over bodies of water! This was insane man! Incredible video yet again!!!

Thanks! And yeah, I think this Coast Guard series is some of our best work - I am super proud of it! We shared the stories of these amazing heroes in a way I thought pilots would really relate to - those that saw it really liked it and retention is super high... But UA-cam really failed it. I have no idea why there was so little traction, it was a real heart breaker to be honest... In it's first weekend this episode got less than 10K views - the channel had nearly 100K subs at the time... UA-cam simply didn't send out the subscriber notifications or suggest it anywhere. The algorithm is a real enigma - I don't understand why some videos totally hit, and others don't.

As a retired USCG LCDR, it was great to watch this vlog. Though I was a ship-driver and not a pilot, was like old hometown week watching the crew work together. Was an Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and completed my quals on the flight deck while on an Arctic Deployment so can definitely empathize with Flight Chops on the cold. Thanks for providing the videos, make me being a patron even more meaningful.

As. Former Coast Guard officer, the most important thing one must remember about any water survival situation, hyperthermia is not just a winter weather concern. While the hypothermia charts fir 75degree water goes from 3 hours to indefinite, it doesn' mean forever. 70 degree water will kill given a few hours immersion withou protective suits.

Wow! The first part has 91k views and this second half has only 29k. Those people who skipped part 2 missed the best part!!!!
Excellent, Excellent work documenting your rescue drill. The in-water cameraman produced some amazing footage. Better than any I've seen of the rescue swimmer and chopper from the survivors vantage point.
    Thanks.

I’m disappointed that more people haven’t seen this. The first one should have millions of views, and so should this one. UA-cam really failed this series. What a shame...

    • @FlightChops

Yup. My team and I consider this series some of our best work - and the viewers that have seen it love it too - but the way the algorithm handled sharing this, truly broke my heart. This was an inflection point in how I feel about publishing on UA-cam.

Watching this while researching a new novel to get an understanding of how this works. Thanks for doing it. Very educational. I was surprised to see that I found it actually somewhat emotionally moving-- just seeing that these Coast Guard boys are always ready to save people, it's really awesome. My grandfather was in the CG during WWII and I have a new respect for the stuff he did (ironically he couldn't swim) Thanks Steve!

You guys both do great videos, but this by far was the best collaboration. It gave an awesome insight into what the USCG Helo crews do everyday. My brother was a flight mechanic at air station Atlantic City NJ and he would tell stories of the training and actual rescues he performed. So this was very familiar for me, but still interesting and exciting to watch. Keep bringing us great videos. Thanks guys!!!!

Being an ex Coast Guard boat Coxswain this was an amazing video. i had the opportunity to be lifted off my boat (41ft utb) in a basket (HH-52A) Late 70's and fly around NYC and be lowered back down to my boat. Helo ops we used to call it. Such an amazing experience.
Of course when we were out on a SAR call looking for people in the water and the Airdales would come on scene and they were there with their spot lights searching for an hour or two and then had to leave because of fuel and the boat crews had to stay out all night, not so amazing!! lol

Always be thinking ahead, playing what if scenarios and train as much as you can, even if that only means watching videos at least
