    I felt the same way when I heard that. The problem is tape showed that more often than not, playcalling wasn't the issue but the lack of execution. And Josh Allen dropped in every area across the board. Matter of fact, Josh Allen's efficiency dropped at ton going from Dorsey to Brady. Dorsey was a scapegoat for Allen's execution and McDermott's defensive playcalling.

    Honestly Q, these monologues on the media landscape are some of my favourites. As a browns fan who isn't from the US and has never been to Cleveland it's fascinating to me to better understand why the media cover the browns the way they do. I would be delighted if you did more videos on the media landscape, I learnt so much, thanks!

    As a Browns from New England (New Haven County in Connecticut to be precise) who happens to work in media (both in podcasting and radio), you're absolutely right. People underestimate the wording that is used because its factual, however it is a subtle dig at Cleveland. I feel part of is because of the stigma that surrounds the Browns and the whole "they have a good roster but will find a way to screw it up" mindset and how they're seemingly trying to keep it alive, when we can that it's no longer the case (or it at least appears to be heading in that direction). Florio has become more and more questionable as time's gone on, but it's really starting to leak out in his appearances

    I’ve also notice our local reporters have been pretty unfair in the coverage of the team (Mary K). Any time I see her post a video on Twitter it’s the one pass Watson doesn’t complete. Then a few hours later I’ll see 5 other videos from other people showing him throw a laser 40+ yards down field, but Mary K never posts those videos, so I just blocked her since she has an obvious agenda

    First and foremost I wish everyone would stop using term fired. In corporate world if you get fired you did something very bad! Like you punched a coworker, you embezzled money, you came to work high. Most the times when I " GOT FIRED" I got a letter stating my position was eliminated, department was restructured and etc. Often I got laid off because business was slowing. In both cases a change needed to be made because organization decided to go in different direction, and that the fact.

    Personal biases are something every reporter, as well as every individual, have. I think most of us understand this. The issue is.... reporters/analysts "not" ignoring personal opinions/feelings which can lead them to misinterpret and misrepresent information and facts.
    An example of this is the way many in the national media have covered the Browns ever since the acquisition of Watson. On numerous occasions over the last 2 seasons, they have portrayed the organization as some sort of joke/dumpster fire, downplayed successes, and have already declared the Watson trade a failure of historical proportion.
    However, pesky little facts show.... (drumroll please!) ... the front office and coaching staff produced a winning record in the aforementioned time span (in spite of constant influx at QB), a team which made the playoffs in '23, and a roster that placed 7 players in this year's Pro Bowl. Yes, Watson has started just 11 games so far. However, despite uneven play, he posted a record of 7-4 in those contests and played very well in his last 2 starts before his season ending injury. No one knows for sure how Watson will perform coming off from his shoulder surgery. But it's silly to call the trade an "historical failure" after only two seasons in which he played a mere 11 games. In my humble opinion (and I'm far from alone), the main reason the national media has been overwhelmingly negative against what the Browns + Watson have been doing in the front office and on the field is due to Watson's actions OFF FROM IT. That is fine when they're covering the man's personal transgressions. But it should play no role in their coverage of what Watson and the team have done from a football standpoint.

  • @mogotti3
    @mogotti3 15 днів тому

    This is the problem with media. Most "reporters" have an agenda/bias and you can't take anything they say seriously because they will frame it to fit their viewpoint (or their networks viewpoint). The perfect example of this is Herbstreit (OSU bias) vs Desmond Howard (Michigan bias). Herbstreit gives objective analysis, while Howard doesn't. It makes everything Howard says less credible. I think people are starting to realize this and are getting their information from smaller, niche creators and moving away from listening to the national media.

    I've been seeing this lately and I think this has a lot to do with sports betting. Just as referees can try to fix games illegally, I think that media can legally try to fix bets by altering a better's perception of a team or a game before it happens. They can paint one team as bad and another as good even if it is not the case.

    I think there are a lot of local journalist that feel like they are the voice of the fans. However, they use the same tactic that Florio uses. then someone that is an actual Cleveland Browns fan takes offense to it, they wonder why it doesn’t go well. A lot of the ESPN Cleveland guys are like that. I think MARY KAY tries not to do this and succeeds. I think she does the best job of keeping these lines clear, locally. I think it’s why they give her access.

    I have two main points to make. The first is about Mike Florio. I dislike him. I dislike his style. The first thing I noticed when I saw his report the other day was the aspect that you referenced regarding "crash landing." I could quibble over whether or not it was subtle. I don't think it was all that subtle. What I think it was invective by design that has been going on for some time about Cleveland. Lots of cities experience this in a variety of ways. New York versus Boston expresses old grudges and insults. New York Versus Chicago, and Los Angeles does the same in different ways. San Francisco versus L.A. has this. Etc, etc, etc. Johnny Carson used to refer to Cleveland as "the mistake on the lake." These jokes are used as currency among others to form one group, and show their separation from another. Us versus them. Florio, as you mentioned, is an East coaster. He is essentially doing that by making "Cleveland" a punching bag. What gets particularly problematic is when an institution from Cleveland attempts to grow/improve, some outsiders like Florio use whatever Cleveland does as wrong...by definition. It is an affirmation of his own superiority...and his audience. And pandering to everyone outside of Cleveland is a very large group. As large as Cleveland's devotees is, the non-Cleveland group will always be larger. This is a cheap way of Florio trying to run with the crowd...if you will. Florio's main strength is in pandering. That's why I dislike him.
    The second point is smaller, but it relates. It is possible to be unbiased. Sticking with empirical evidence is unbiased...as long as you are not making the measurements. A reported box score is unbiased. There can be no subjective intent on reporting the numbers...even if some of the numbers are arrived at subjectively. In other words, an umpire may be biased, but once it is an official statistic, reporting the stat is not biased. Once we enter into analysis, or description, we engage perspective. All have value. I only make the point because we can't abandon attempts at, and reporting of, pure facts with the notion that pure observation is not possible. While that may be true, the reporting of the observation is separate from the observation, and still possible.

  • @ryank3210
    @ryank3210 15 днів тому

    This is 100% a product of having a national audience that isn't composed of hardcore fans. The vast majority tune out after the super bowl, tune in for the draft, then tune back out until week 1 or the preseason. That's why Dorsey getting fired was brought up. It happened last season, and the new season hasn't started, so for national and casual fans, it's likely they don't even know Dorsey is here. It's no less relevant than mentioning Kevin won CotY last year.
    As to the bias against Dorsey, we have to realize the way he's seen nationally is different than in Cleveland. If he had been fired at the end of the year and signed here, I think he gets talked about just like AVP. But he was fired mid-season, and his old team immediately started to succeed. That makes him a loser to most fans, true or not. He needs to do some winning before that perception will change.

  • @bigredracingdog466

    Here's the lie: The Bills' offense didn't get better after Dorsey left. The ONE thing that changed was that Josh Allen was turning the ball over less. In every other statistical category Dorsey was better than his successor. With Dorsey (WD) vs. after Dorsey (AD):
    Points per drive:
    WD - 2.45
    AD - 2.27
    Yards per play:
    WD - 6
    AD - 5.4
    Success rate:
    WD - 48.1%
    AD - 43.7%
    Pass success rate:
    WD - 52.3%
    AD - 45.6%
    Run success rate:
    WD - 46.1%
    AD - 44.5%
    Stephon Diggs yards per game:
    WD - 86.8
    AD - 43.1
    Stephon Diggs catches per game:
    WD - 7.3
    AD - 4.9
    Stephon Diggs TDs:
    WD - 7 in 10 games
    AD - 1 in 7 games
    This is where the Bills offense was ranked last season after Week 10 when he was fired:
    3rd in DVOA
    1st in success rate
    3rd in EPA per play
    4th in QB rating
    3rd in yards per play
    2nd in 3rd down conversion %
    3rd in red zone efficiency
    If the Browns had anything close to those numbers last season they would've won 13 games.

      Except that’s the whole point. Yes they had some of the worst turnover luck in the NFL but the offense Dorsey ran was too predictable which led to turnovers. Same as Stefanski. Uncreative with the ground game while using near the least motion in the league. The reason it works is because you rely on the players to make it work and hit home runs instead of scheming guys open and taking what a defense gives you.
      The offense was about the same at the end of the season, but the strength of schedule and results against top defense were hardly the same. The first half of the season Dorsey’s offense faced 3 top 10 defenses and a bunch of bottom 10 teams. The last 7 weeks of offense 5 games were against top 10 defenses. Straight offensive ratings don’t show us a whole lot and Digg’s success isn’t total offensive success. Also situational football was better. Extending drives and eating clock instead of putting up numbers keeps the other team off the field with the ability to score. In the second half of the season they had all but one game with greater than 50% of the game time of possession. Through the first 10 4 games were below 50%. 2 of the first 10 games they had a time of possession greater than 35 minutes or around 60% TOP. Of the last 7 5 games they had the ball over 35 minutes. I’d be interested to see how that translates to lead changes as well as I don’t have that data. All that said, he can be successful but expect more risk and reward from Dorsey with a similar overall scheme to Stefanski. The biggest and best improvement is that he has shown a commitment to using the middle of the field which we have lacked in recent years.

      @@boeingair1 I'm not sure "luck" had much to do with it. I don't pretend to know what is going on in the mind of a QB, but sometimes they go through spells where they lose their sense of danger and commit a lot of TOs. I think that was the case with Allen last season. Whether it was a coaching change and subsequent difference in play-calling that caused it is hard to assess. What I do know is that in 2022 the Bills were #4 in scoring offense, #4 in total yards, #4 in Yds per play, #3 in passing TDs, and #4 in net passing Yds per attempt. That's pretty consistent with the first 10 games of 2023. The only difference was turnovers. Now that DCs have had 7 games to assess Joe Brady's play-calling, it will be interesting to see if the Bills go forward or backward this season.

    • @boeingair1
      @boeingair1 13 днів тому

      @@bigredracingdog466 Absolutely, will be interesting to see. I am just saying other metrics show a different side of the story and may be better indicators of overall success of an offense rather than explosive play ability and talent of the highest level playmakers. Analytics tell us so much and so little at the same time. Factoring their success against level of opponent and their success in situational football are more important than total quantitive stats in my opinion but again that is just an opinion. Thanks for bringing facts to the table and having an open discourse on what they hopefully mean for our team's success.
