Spent a lot of time on LI in the late 80's and early 90's (I knew someone in Smithtown...) and played the Bethpage courses a lot. Was a decent player then (9 hcp) and only played the Black and Red once in all those years. I immediately knew I had met my match. The courses were brutally long and tough (but beautiful). Never seen bunkers like that in my life.I did love playing the Green course though. That would be a great one for hickories.
We had plans to play Green the next day but had to cancel. That’s my next course to play there, though. I’ve heard from many people that they enjoy Green better than Black.
@@TheHickoryHacker The people there in '93 told me that the Green is the oldest of the 5 courses at Bethpage. It is not a Tillinghast as far as i know. When I played the Black there was only 1 set of tees and it was just too long. I played with a college golfer from Florida and he got so frustrated he wanted to quit. You'll have a nice time on the Green, lots of fun to play and beautiful. Your comments about the sand are spot on. I found I had to take a bigger swing and use more force to hit decent bunker shots. Never experienced that on any course before or since.
Interesting FAQ video Christian. I think it's great that you approached the round by setting realistic expectations for your performance. I'm finding lately that when I take this approach I have a lot more fun. I've also "mostly" :) learned to take my medicine on the shots to get back on the fairway from deep rough or from behind a tree. Like setting my expectations at the beginning of a round, it almost always results in a more fun round, and fewer strokes.
Yeah, absolutely! It’s one of the things I like about figuring out my course handicap - the strokes given often put me in a frame of mind where I set realistic expectations, and even give me the opportunity to exceed them sometimes. Even on a tough course like Black, I know now that double bogey golf is realistically within my ability, and that there are some holes where I’ll do even better than that.
Since this is a FAQs blog: what camera/lens are you shooting these basement videos with? I really like the bokeh you're getting, it's a nice soft background.

I’d love to join you for a round at Bethpage sometime! I shot a 90 there (with modern clubs) and couldn’t have been happier. It’s a great test!
That’d be great - let’s make it happen this summer! Drop me a message on Instagram with some target dates and let’s coordinate.
@@TheHickoryHacker Will do!

Yeah, me too! I’m using the Cinematic feature on the iPhone 14 Pro for these videos and making sure the focal point is my face.
