I went to see this in the cinema when it was released as it was being compared to All The President's Men (which I love) and when the film finished everyone just sat there in complete silence for a few minutes. Never seen any movie have that effect. Great and powerful movie, absolutely deserved the Oscar win.

A lot of this goes back to a Shawshank Redemption quote. "Would it help if I told them I'm not homosexual?" "Neither are they. You'd have to be human first." It's about power and a sick satisfaction, boy or girl.

This movie seems to have been forgotten by the "reaction" community, I'm very sad to say.
I'm always happy when I stumble on someone who brings it back. It's a powerful story, a great movie and a context that we need to never forget.

I'm crazy about this movie. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it because it's such a good depiction of what it really looks like to speak truth to power. There's no car chases, shootouts, or fist fights. It's just a bunch of adults doing the work and it's long hours of quiet research and I'm thrilled this won Best Picture. And I'm glad you were picking up on the language. For a movie with such limited dialogue, they use it so well to show how communities keep people out and keep secrets in. Anyway yeah, I love this movie, I'm crazy about it, and I'm so happy I saw this pop up. Glad you enjoyed it!

I watched this in theater. At the end when we see all the places abuse was reported, you could hear the gasps and people crying. It was heartbreaking and powerful.

As someone who grew up in catholic Ireland, its hard to describe to people overseas the influence the church had here. I remember the occasional creepy priest who suddenly got moved to another parish, or to the missions in Africa or South America. This film does a great job in showing how that culture of silence was maintained.
It really is a great film. Top notch performances across the board, with some excellent moments from several of the minor characters. Well deserving of its Oscar win.

This is on my top five films of the past decade list, probably in the #1 spot. I have lost count how many times I’ve watched it.
I appreciate your inclusion here of three of the little moments that stand out to me-the faces of the hockey player/successful businessman and of Sacha’s grandmother, and that brief glimpse of two of the more recent victims. That man’s expression when he heard his abuser’s name just gives me chills every time, and the grandmother’s stunned and overwhelmed face demonstrates exactly why there were no protestors at the Globe that morning. Lastly, I think the audience needed to see the victims as the children that they were, even though the interviews were done with the adults, understandably.
When Cardinal Law died a few years ago, some of the abuse victims from Phil Saviano’s group had a press conference in Mitch Garabidien’s office, showing he is still on the job. The first two victims interviewed here have both died since 2001. The first, interviewed at Mitch’s office, died of an overdose a few years after the story was published. The second died a year or so after this film came out, just a few months before his abuser was released from prison early for good behavior. The article I read said that it would have wrecked him to find out his abuser was free.
This film is so brilliantly written. As much as I like All the President’s Men, as a film for the non-subject-matter expert, I think Spotlight does a better job. AtPM expects you to know the names of the more prominent members of the President’s team just to keep up, which most people in 1976 would have. Spotlight does a better job of laying out the crime and the cover up, just because it wasn’t as well known to the general public.
If anyone is interested in seeing a documentary show that deals with the scandal from the Vatican’s perspective as well as at the victims’s level, watch the Frontline episode Secrets of the Vatican from not too long after the current pope was installed. It starts with the molestation case and then moves onto non-child-related priest sex scandals and then banking scandals, and how all of them brought down Benedict XVI. [Trigger warning:] There was one woman interviewed whose story of rape on the floor of her church when she was just nine years old still breaks my heart.
Phil Saviano was right, it did go all the way to the Vatican.

Exactly, great comparison to the Big Short. Both from the same year, both covering massive, global cover-ups, both taking the matter extremely serious and yet with different tones. One was funny because the mechanics of a financial crisis are dry and confusing, the other subdued because the subject of child molestation is straight foward as hell and blood curdling - a live wire, causing an emotional reaction immediately. I go back to this movie annually, the writing is nearly flawless.

Probably one of the least flashy great movies of recent years. Just such a powerful story told impeccably well. Great cast, script, filmmaking, everything. And yeah like you, I was surprised how much it affected me, because we all already know the main takeaway. But the film does a great job taking you to a time before it was all public knowledge, and really puts you through the shock, disbelief, and horror of finding out.

Did you see the stuff before the end credits? It just kept going and going.
I saw this in the Boston Common cinema when it was released. There was a fire alarm about thirty minutes before the end. I am sure that it was not in any way related to this movie playing, but not 100% sure.

Such a fantastic movie. No flashy camera gimmicks, no "hey look at this thing we elaborately rigged up for this set piece" moments - just an important and weighty topic, incredible performances and great pacing..
I am at a complete loss as to why mankind continues to sweep this repugnant shit under the rug when there has been such a wealth of evidence.
Imagine any other corporation/company/foundation having THOUSANDS of cases of sexual abuse towards kids like the catholic church has had and not getting completely dismantled and burned to the ground?

I enjoyed your reaction to this true story. Most true stories involve journalism which I am a veteran. You strike me as someone who enjoys this genre, true stories involving journalism. As others have suggested, may I also suggest, All the Presiden's Men, the film that got me interested in journalism at an earlier age. Also others. "Live from Baghdad". The Pelican Brief. I am now following this channel bc I did not find it possible for Spotlight to be cut down to a 22m review but you only showed most key scenes and kept true to the story. You did not waste my time. There are some scenes I would have left in for context but overall a great reaction. I too loved this film.

all the president's men is probably tied with zodiac for me as the greatest journalism/newspaper movie. if you're not up on your nixon history it can be a little opaque at times - it was definitely made for an audience that had just lived through watergate and knew all the conspirators etc - but the investigation and the atmosphere will still grab you.
