Tanker Fill Site Operations - Lake Chautauqua, NY

This video clip was taken last weekend (October 20th) at our rural water supply seminar in Ashville, NY. The clip shows the the third of three tanker fill sites that were used during the 2-hr tanker shuttle drill where a peak flow of 1,515 gpm was attained.
This fill site shows a 1,500 gpm pumper from the Busti FD drafting from the ferry launch area and supplying 4-inch LDH lines to fill tankers. There were alot of leaves and debris in the water that kept clogging strainers and the pumper crew tried several different things before this video was shot. While drafting from the front intake is not ideal in terms of flow, they ended up having to use the intake in order to get the suction strainer farther out into the lake. They were still able to fill tanker at about 700 gpm. The video is narrated by Mark Davis of GBW Associates, LLC.

The debris problem could be fixed by using your straight ladder from the ferry dock into the water and marrying the hard sleeve to it to keep the strainer elevated in the water.

Why is the 1000gpm mark so important in the U.S.?

NFPA 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus addresses a number of design and performance factors for different types of fire apparatus. For tankers (tenders or mobile water supply apparatus), one of the performance requirements is the loading and off-loading at a minimum rate of 1,000 gpm. Therefore, our goal for filling is at least 1,000 gpm. We use the principle of "why would I set up to fill at a rate slower than what the tanker is designed to be filled?" It is a good performance goal for training and running shuttle operations.

Also you only really have 2 ways to speed up tanker shuttles, Filling and dumping. The travel time will be the same regardless. Fill with 4 inch and put the largest dump valve on your truck you can
