Yellow Sweet Clover Identification - Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants

- Hey guys in this video we discuss how to identify Yellow Sweet Clover or Melilotus officianalis. Yellow Sweet Clover is a plant commonly found alongside roadsides, trails, and driveways. While it's not a true clover species, it gets that part of its name from the arrangement of the 3 leaflets. On the margins of the leaves you will notice very small serrations and the leaflets are usually a long elongated shape or sometimes linear. The leaves and branches of this plant grow in an alternating pattern along the stem and the stem is tough and firm but not woody. The yellow flowers bloom anywhere from April through October depending upon where you live but it usually has a month or two of flowering in any location. The flowers are yellow with five petals but the upper petal is larger than the four underneath it. The flowers come out in elongated spikes and there can be dozens of spikes per plant and dozens of flowers per spike. Yellow Sweet Clover has a nice fragrance when bruised and it has use as food and medicine. The leaves can be made into a tea for enjoyment or medicine and the fragrance is associated with coumarins, which is also an anti coagulant.

I think these plants smell great. I made a body spray with some. I think it smells floral and like grass. I guess your right, it does smell like cinnamon some.

What do people use this plant for "medicinally" speaking? And does it always need to be a tea or cooked or can it be enjoyed raw? Thanks for making these videos!
I have a bundle of "Yellow" sweet clover here in the bureau and the scent of vanilla fills the air...very intoxicating...I've not seen the white sweet clover yet to compare the fragrance .
If you can answer this. I would like to know if I can make tea out of danlion roots if it isn't fall?
Do you harvest just the leaves and dry them?
The ones i like are much smaller of a lightish green colour the leaves are shaped like hearts and have yellow flowers they taste like a sweet and sour version of celiry great raw and can be used as a spice its also that yellow clover only that sometimes have 4 leaves any other types wont make any as for the luck part i cant confirm if its true or not anyways they are very comon in eastern Ontario Canada
But they never get more then a few inch tall and are mostly found in cities

question! we have yellow and white sweet clover on my farm but we also have purple, this this cousin/species edible and medicinal as well?
Yes! If you're talking about Trifolium pratense I've even discussed it on my channel before!
If it's Dalea pupurea then I've read it's edible and medicinal but haven't tried it before because it doesn't grow in my area so I'd recommend doing more research on that species.
