My left ear loved the sound
Pro tip: you don’t need to remove any of the door wiring except the speaker cable. I just folded the panel down while I did the install.
that's the first thing i thought, pulling all those wires out was kinda pointless.
HELPFUL TIP
It is NOT necessary to DISCONNECT all the wires from the door panel and remove. I did NOT disconnect panel. I just discon'ed the blue one that goes to the speaker and then gently laid the panel against the seat. Saved a bunch of time and headache. Cut the process down from about 25 minutes to less than 10. And it removed the chances of things going wrong. I understand the "why" of doing it (safety and more work area), but my fear of breaking a connector far outweighed out that. Especially b/c of part two below.
Other issue: That stupid BLUE CONNECTOR that goes into the BMW speaker is god awful. Snapped off the drivers side door. It does NOT come out easily. Take it slowly and be patient. That was easily the toughest part of the whole thing.
This was a super easy install.
literally 3 screws on door.
3 screws around speaker.
Discon speaker and route new wire.
put everything back together.
that easy.
I just order and installed the Stage 1 kit for my 2014 i3 with standard audio. The hardest part was getting the speaker unplugged. It was stuck solid. Otherwise, everything went smooth. I did not remove the panel like he shows, just popped off the top let it lean out against me, and had plenty of working room. The first door took 25 minutes, the second 15. Seriously, both took me 10 minutes to get the damn plug out of the factory speaker. You should add something about this.
So far, just sitting in my car listening I'm not hearing a major improvement. I'm look for more definition (less muddiness clean highs) and a well developed stereo image.Might be asking too much with the design of the standard system and I don't plan to return these. I need to do some on the road tests to see if it helped against the road noise drowning out the highs too. I'll post an update in a few weeks once I have more time with them.
Update: After a week of listening, I can tell a difference in the tightness of the bass, and the crispness f the highs. I give this a "would buy it again" and "recommended" if you are not satisfied with your current standard radio stock speakers.
16:00 high frequencies travel the same speed as low frequencies. speed of sound is not dependent on frequency.

Help me understand why all door panel connectors had to be removed? Couldn’t you just set it aside connected?
Just installed the non-Harmon Kardon (so just the front doors) in 3/2020. It was pretty easy overall but I was surprised at how hard it was to unplug the factory speakers. It looks like you just pull a bit in the video, but the connector was super tight for both the drivers side and passenger side in my car. Ultimately, it did pull out - there was no special trick, just pulling very persistently and harder than you would expect watching the video.

Good video, tempted by the upgrade as the HK system has good clarity, but can be a bit harsh on female vocals. Is there anything for the two subs in the front foot well?

Ironically, the sound on this video is terrible! Main volume too low and deafening when end music comes on. Great video otherwise though!

They have upgraded speakers for the base system. They sound much better than the stock speakers IMO.

My BAV speaker upgrade has actually been a downgrade on my 16 i3 with the standard 4 speaker system...my bav speakers are very distorted at mid to high volume...I installed them just as the video showed, plug and play...any ideas or suggestions?

hey what do you guys do with the speakers you remove from the cars?
+Wane Stokes Good question Wane... If they are functional Craigslist or eBay are good options. If they are not functional they should be recycled as e-waste at a facility in your area. Personally I save my e-waste in a bin and recycle about once a year.

Do you sell sound proofing materials for the i3?
We discontinued carrying our branded sound deadening material in early 2020, it was not included in the upgrade kits. Here is a link for sound deadening material with great reviews:

It’s a ton of it too. 10 Sq/ft for $20, vs the 3 Sq/ft we used to give for $30.

Has anyone tried this upgrade? I really want to upgrade an i3 soundsystem but not sure if it will meet my expectations.
I do consider myself an audiophile so I am willing to spend money on anything that can get the standard soundsystem to sound good.
