- The Welsh Language, or Cymraeg, expresses action differently to English. And 'to have' or 'to get' in the word CAEL and how it changes when being used is no exception. This is a great video for beginner to intermediate Welsh learners or language curious polyglots alike, as you will get a glimpse of one of the Welsh Language's most important verbs and a gloss over of how it works.

This is brilliant and opens so many speaking possibilities! Thanks for explaining all the nuances ! Diolch yn fawr!
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
"I'm having the eating of my lunch." "The bells would have their ringing." Those constructions alone demonstrate the inherent poetry that is the Welsh language. Diolch Ben. BTW, in Sanskrit, one would say: The book is of me. (genitive) instead of : I have a book. (possessive) Similar Indo-European constructions but continents apart.
Interesting Sanskrit comparison. Thanks.
I think there's similar phrasing in Welsh, too. From what I learnt:
*_Mae car gyda fi_*
_I have a car._
or literally,
_"There is a car with me"_
1. Receiving things. 1:01
2.permiaaion. 1:45

Diolch am hynny / Thanks for that.
Added to the description, and UA-cam will update it to add chapters within a few hours I'm sure.
Nice job, fella.
The usage of ’cael’ has some similarities with Finnish ’saada’ (to get, to receive, to be allowed to) and ’voida’ (to be able to do something, to be allowed to).
The way Welsh can shuffle the subject and object with cael was really fascinating!
Welsh Wednesdays are a great idea! I would be happy to hear you describe some of the more difficult or unique aspects of Welsh, as lessons like that are not all that common. For example, this video would be great for a Welsh Wednesday.
Kiitos. I appreciate that. And after the move we will look and see if a simple short Welsh Wednesday video is something I can get out there for y'all.
I love the idea of Welsh Wednesdays! I'm a new learner (about 2 months in,) so this would be so helpful! Diolch!
A pleasure to help you shove the cwch (boat) out.
Great video! This helps alot, thank you.
Glad I helped
Great video Ben.Diolch yn fawr.
Cael has been a tricky(anodd) word for me but you have really nailed it for me with your wonderful (godidog) presentation. Diolch.
Hwyl!👍🏴
Da clywed fod hyn yn help. Diolch.
I think this one of your best lessons I have it book marked and frequently recommend it to my fellow dysgwyr. More LIke this please!
Diolch yn fawr iawn. Yn wir, I shall consider your kind words.
Another great video Ben! Welsh Wednesday sounds like a great idea. Pob lwc gyda'r symud tŷ!! :)
Diolch yn fawr. Mae'n debyg bydd symud tŷ yn y flwyddyn newydd bellach.
Noswaith dda @BenLlywellyn Educating the masses can’t be a bad a thing! 😃🏴💓💓💓
We are being taught slang North Waleian, not like how it’s taught in schools!
Diolch Stella! Yes, true, mae angen cael safonau Cymraeg well / There is a need for better standards in schools
Wow, yet another reminder to count the cost of learning Welsh... encouragingly vivid though
Glad you thought it clear and vivid Diolch.
Welsh Wednesday - Syniad da iawn Ben.
Cheers Meejah. I hope after the move I can find a format that allows this.
Good vid Ben. I prefer the South Walian way. Ces I amser da. Ches I ddim amser da. Gaethoch chi amser da? etc etc.
Diolch yn fawr. Mae gan y ddwy (Gogs a Hwntws) bethau da fel ei gilydd!
An interesting video on a much misused verb, which is not well taught in Welsh medium schools, where it really needs to be drilled that cael means to get and not to have. In North Wales they use "Mae gen i chwaer", to say I have eg a sister, whereas in South Wales we will say "Mae chwaer gyda fi". This is of course one of the many differences between north and south Walian dialects. Do the other Celtic languages also have similar constructions to convey possession?
To my knowledge all Celtic Languages do this.
We often hear Irish people saying something like "What are you AFTER doing?" I always wonder what this means. Does it mean Beth ydych chi WEDI'i wneud? What have you been doing? or does it mean "What do you want to do?"
Yes, the after bit in Irish English is nearly very like Welsh Wedi.
WEDI in Welsh (and equivalents in Irish and Scottish Gaelic - Cornish and Breton do not have this) does not equate exactly to English HAVE. WEDI always means something that is in the past. Also note LACK of use of AFTER in Hiberno-English and in Welsh. "How long are you here for?" in standard English this means "How long have you been here for?" Ers faint dych chi yma? Same construction in Welsh, with no AFTER. It's not "How long are you after being here for?" (no AFTER/WEDI simply because it's not over) --- An additional note: due to calquing from English, you will sometimes hear "Dwi wedi bod yma ers mis." (Wi 'di bod yma ers mis.) "I have been here for a month." More natural Welsh would be "Dwi yma ers mis." (Wi yma ers mis.) Note how the natural way to express it is easier and shorter. In natural Welsh, wedi is only for something that is over/past - a completed action.
Diolch yn fawr.
Croeso.
SCANDINAVIAN....6O4K...YORIC
How "secretly" English is Argentina?
They fought a war against each other.
In addition to welsh settlement.
It is quite Italian.
