Do you think we should do away with the movie rating system? POOL RULES: One: Speak up and join the conversation- we encourage respectful debate. Two: Respect your community- racism, misogyny, homophobia and hate speech aren’t tolerated. Three: “Be nice.” - Dalton from Roadhouse
I don't mind them but I don't really like the culture ... behind them? I mean I don't really watch horror much bc I can be squeamish so it would be nice to know what the hell I'm walking into.
They need to mend profanity. I don't think two f's is too bad. Parents nowadays cuss up a storm anyway but Batman vs. Superman had "well, what the fuck do you want?" and a dude flipping off a drone. That's an automatic R, I don't see it; not like there were any sexual remarks. I don't think naked Affleck pushed the R-rating, X-Men: Days of Future Past had naked Jackman. The Blood spatting on the wall after someone is shot I get, the prison shanking I get. The amount of f's I don't get. They could make have a limit of 3 at least. The cu next Tuesday, I get. I know a lot of people just don't like the word, think in Australia, it's so normal to say but here it'll catch people off guard likely offending them.
In answer to the question I say no. Slight tangent - after watching the recent Aladdin, Lion King & Dumbo trailers, as well as Alita Battle Angel, Infinity War & everything Andy Serkis - I thought, should movies start an industry wide (or worldwide) CGI quality standard rating? Like the MPAA age rating! Or would that make studios simply reach a comfortable standard, which then limits future innovation?
The fact that Joe and his wife watch anime together is my dream. I need someone to watch anime with in my life :( also near the end with Dan's "shore thing" joke and Joe's reaction to it, friendship man. I've learned a valuable lesson from this episode that I need better people in my life LOL
Yeah, I've definitely heard him mention it before. I no joke, I don't have time for anime anymore but I would be so happy to watch Joe review anime that it might make me find the time to watch some new shows. Give Joe an anime show!
Not at all hentai, just a very very very very light love story. Practically just a bro-mance. If you consider Yuri on Ice Hentai, you're more of a prude than me 🤣
How did this discussion not include that crazy MPAA Rating Poster where the rabbit can watch G, PG, PG-13, but not R, and only NC-17 with sunglasses on? I get SO confused with that poster. Did the rabbit sneak into the NC-17 movie and the glasses are a disguise?
It's weird that this episode discusses the MPAA system, because I literally just watched This Film Is Not Yet Rated (the documentary about the MPAA). Dan said the documentary is outdated now, but now I want to look it up and see if any of the information from that doc truly is outdated. For instance, the ratings board was supposed to be a group of parents who resigned when their kids turned 21, but I think in the documentary that none of the raters matched that profile, and one was an aspiring screenwriter. They also had no actual guidelines for how they chose ratings. It was just a "eh I feel like it should be this" but the head of the MPAA can just overrule any decision the board makes. Also, did the appeals court change or is it still nothing but studio executives? The best point that the documentary made that I'd like to look into are that there are no child behavioral psychologists or other such experts on the board who are actually knowledgeable on what is and is not damaging for child viewing (for instance, we rate sex much, much harsher than violence, of which there is an abundance). I feel like having random parents on the board may be helpful, but I think it should be mixed with actual professionals in different areas who would can make a more informed decision. Setting up an actual ruleset and training regimen for the ratings board would be a positive change to (again, if they haven't already done so since the documentary aired). The MPAA was created as a self-regulating device so that the film industry wouldn't be subject to government censorship, but it therefore has, or had, no legislated procedures. EDIT: First link I found in a Google search suggests that not much has really changed: www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/03/movie-ratings-mpaa-donald-trump
The "senior raters" are allowed to work in the entertainment industry and not be parents ( as stated in Roth's reading from the statement by the MPAA ).
Gavin Smiley and that’s why the ratings systems rules should be general rules, not set in stone numbers.G-no, PG-few, PG13-some, R-lots. NC17-excessive. They should lower R to 16 instead of 17 in order to make the gap between R and NC17 movie. A movie like Eight Grade would stay R, a movie like South Park would be re-rated NC17.
I love the way this Movie Rating discussion evolved into a discussion of relationships affected by viewing/binging on Netflix etc. I do not consider this a bad fork in the road, it is actually relevant to relationships whether family, friends or partners. I love dialogue that goes...well I would compare it to the mission statement at the beginning of all those (older) Star Trek series. So, Live Long and Prosper, SJnews.
in reference to the Charmin Bears,i dont want to be that person who says "you'll understand once you have kids" BUT I too never talked about pooping and wiping publically until I had a toddler. now I not only have to tell him when I'm pooping at home so he doesnt keep screaming for me but he will announce to anyone in the public bathroom that "mommy is pooping". I also have a friend who's child will rountenly ask "is there Brown in town?" when asked if he wiped well enough. although the concept is weird, the Charmin commercials make sense to me 😩
I elect that I watch the shows first by myself and then rewatch them with my significant other just to revel in his reactions to what I know is coming! This is probably why I’m single. 😆
I whole heartily agree w/ Billy Biz: 8th grade had the scariest/get out/cringe-worthiest moment of last year. Just behind A Star is Born and A Quiet Place for me as far as directorial debuts go.
I agree that “Eighth Grade” was the scariest movie of the year. I also think it’s hilarious that people who are actually in eighth grade can’t watch the movie “Eighth Grade”, despite the fact they are living these events out on a daily basis in their real lives.
There have been at least a couple tv shows where the person I was watching with cheated and watched without me, and as hard as I tried I could never get back into it - mostly because as soon as I tried to catch up alone, I realized the joy was gone.
Interesting discussion I loved "This film is not yet rated" when it came out. The MPAA ratings seem pretty weird to me. You can't swear that much, (Americans have a weird hang up over C U Next Tuesday, it's practically a term of endearment here in Scotland) And yet I just watched Alita Battle Angel, not to mention the LOTR movies and the Bayformers, and it seems like as long there is no blood you can be as graphic as you want. (Optimus killing Sentinel Prime springs to mind) I wonder how I'd have turned out if I wasn't able to watch RoboCop and Predator as a kid the year they came out. The former is to this day one of the most violent films you'll see, yet it was adored by kids, and subsequently marketed to them. The bland homogenisation of films towards the "U.S Parent Friendly" model since the Pg-13 rating came about due to backlash to gremlins/temple of Doom is regretful I'm my opinion.
Hey, if you have an hour, watch the first episode of Gapdong (in case it's on netflix in the USA) it's a korean drama. I loved it to death. (the lead is the young version of the main character of Ninja Assassin, if you've seen that movie) That drama really gave me the chills. :D
Okay, a while ago I saw Joe recommend some anime and I thought it was cool. But on this video I see it wasn't a fluke, and it makes me so happy to see how much he has watch and how much he seems to like. By the way not sure if Joe will see this, but this upcoming season of My Hero Academia is the best! You wont be disappointed. As a manga reader I've been waiting very eagerly for this arc
Billy Business! Liking Ron Livingston *and* 'Making A Murder' !? Awesome, come over and bring your netflix password. Roth Cornet with the smooth mention of 'War Of The Roses' I highly recommend that movie for couples. hehe

if by any chance Joe sees this, if you haven't already seen it you should check out Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories on Netflix Its a lovely slice of life show from Japan about a man who runs a small diner and his regulars.

No. It would be nice if they did something similar to TV and add why it's rated.
The fact that Joe and his wife have "My hero academia" as the show not to skip ahead on, again substantiates everyone's liking of Joe Starr
Harshiv Mahajan facts
Joe Starr remains superior screen junkie
"Don't Cheat with Evil in Your Heart and Snooky on Your TV"
That quote deserves to be on a decorative pillow.
Now we need this couples discussion, but with a panel of the significant others...
I love Roth's definition of 'work related'
That bit at the end about Netflix & Chill cheating was hilarious. I was laughing so hard I was almost in tears
Oh this is pre-taped!!! Cool cool cool.... Hey Billy looking sharp... And excited for new set
Yuri on Ice has an amazingly happy theme song. Just makes you want to twirl.
Roth is absolute sunshine. That's all.

MURRELL 2020
I came here looking for an Aladdin sneak peak discussion. This was 10x better.

Xander Borg I KNOW, RIGHT? They seem PERFECT for each other!
No drugs up butts in Civil War, Roth? I’m pretty sure you don’t know what Bucky was REALLY hiding.
The whole partner binging etiquette was some Seinfeld-level discussion of triviality. Keep it up guys

Does this mean that they're finally moving?
ROTH, I MISS YOUR RIVERDALE REVIEWS!!
Without being weird, just wanna say I like Roth's hair when she styles it like this. Looks nice. Nice comment of the day.
Fun Fact: One of the few PG-13 movies with 2 f-bombs in it was About A Boy with Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult
The American President is also PG-13 and has three f-bombs.
Rent also has two F-bombs in it.
So does Moneyball

Dan Murrell 2020 with Roth as a running mate? Maybe?
I agree Roth, using Cee U Next Tuesday in a complimentary fashion should be allowed.
Oh my God I loved this episode. Absolute re-watch
Netflix in recent months has only suggested Korean dramas and Japanese programs. I'm happy someone else is experiencing it lol
Please have epic movie voice say, "How much butt could a butt chig chug if a butt chug could chug butt."
it was live when they filmed it, we just didn't get to see it then.
Cant wait to see the new studio when you guys come back.

My favorite MPAA story was when Matt and Trey were told if South Park BLU contained 400 or more curse words it would be NC-17, the movie has 399.
Gavin Smiley and that’s why the ratings systems rules should be general rules, not set in stone numbers.G-no, PG-few, PG13-some, R-lots. NC17-excessive. I'd like to know what other anime Joe watches besides Yuri on ice..
ok, just as I was typing it he mentioned My Hero Academia.
You should have a ratings system like the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) with proper adult classification
It’s so funny cause the debate they’re having is the same as the one in the latest Simpsons episode
Everyone is living their couple goals, and that's awesome.
