Just to add to this from my own experiences.... I live in a town with limited resources as far as auto parts are concerned. So rather than drive 70 miles to Salt Lake for a 2 cent seal, I tried a Dorman rubber o-ring in place of the teflon seal. It didn't last but a couple of weeks. I pulled it out and the rubber was starting to disintegrate. I won't try that again. So yeah, I don't suggest rubber unless it's your only way of getting home. FWIW, I've had success using Vaseline to get the teflon seals in. Great video, BTW! I'll definitely try this on the next go around.
Thanks for sharing my friend! Yes, logic would suggest that rubber would be the best but in this case, it’s Teflon for the win 👍. Take care and thank you for reaching out 👊
I always use a tapered punch. Or anything smooth that's tapered really. That way you can stretch it equally a little at a time.. Thanks for the videos!!
I use the tapered end of a 3/8 8mm socket, as hot of water as you can get out of the tap, soak 3 mins, roll up taper on socket and they usually go on pretty easy, if there is a little slack it seems to shrink up.
Even when they are tight the line still pivots so I always figured Ford used the Teflon seal because it probably resists abrasion better? I just put a new reservoir on my pump that’s another fun job 😂
@@KASLCustoms Thanks for the response man. I was just wondering due to my short transfer line starting to look a little rough but the rack still being good. I have read on Ford Ranger forums of guys not being able to get new lines sealed up in those ports when replacing the two lines and end up having to just replace the rack. Lol. Sucks if that's the case. Thanks again bud.
When my 91 GT steering rack leaked, it was from inner tie rod end, not line. I changed it out and hated aspect ratio on replacement rack, like it came from an LX v6, so kept old rack instead of trade it in to get core money back but want to put original rack back in, as it has way less turns from lock to lock... so be careful on those replacement racks, make sure you get right aspect ratio.
I have a parts car with a "good ?" Rack, well atleast its dry. If these are known issues with these cars maybe I shouldn't use it and just get a new one. I was gonna get a reman one but I heard the rebuilds often interchange the 5.0 rack with the 4 cyl one so I really don't know how to go about this without spending $400 on a new rack. Any thought?
Them nylon seals can be a pain another good trick is to get yourself a pretty good size round tapered center punch slide the ring on the center punch get some hot water in a cup not boiling hot though soak it in the cup and slide it up the fatter end slowly until it opens to the size you need ! But anyways how do you keep that garage so clean owning two foxbodys you can literally eat of them floor buddy
Yeah they are! I like your idea though for sure!! Lol, I’m pretty OCD when it comes to clean. I honestly don’t function well unless I have a clean space. I’m sure if I saw a shrink they would medicate me 😂😂😂
Glad i stumbled across your video on this topic as i am fixing to install a rack for the first time next week. Ive been watching videos and including the cj pony part video. It looks to be pretty staright forward but are the any other things i shoukd know? Ive got the old one unbolted accept for the rag joint to rack pinch bolt. Do you remeber waht size socket or wrench you used to get it off? Did you use a wrench or ratchet/socket to get it off? Thanks 👍🏼
Right on! I’m glad it helped. You’ll need an open ended wrench and you’ll do 1/8” turns to get the nuts off - it’s tight tolerances!! It’s not as bad as it seems. You’ll do fine 💪
Any idea where the common leaks are? Been wiping and staring at my rack multiple times. Seems like it coming from below the lines. Or above them what goes into the steering shaft. Anyone with ideas?
for the poor boys..lucas power steering leak fix .....youre power steer might whine a little bit more but worked for me...(2 years ago)!!!!!!!
Hahaha - I don’t mind the poor boy fox at all. There’s a time and a place for everything!

@@KASLCustoms you bet! 👊
I use a 3/8 extension to stretch the Teflon just enough so I can thread the seal on. Trial and error at first.
That’s a great way to do it!! Thx for sharing 👍👊

I e heard of this method as well 👌

Yep - very good point! They do still pivot and you are probably correct as to why they use the Teflon 👍
Great Video!! You have got to do a video on the power steering whine. It’s embarrassing 😂
This is Gold! Exactly what we need. Thanks!
Thx my friend 👍👍
Very informative video. Thanks. How about the ports on the rack where the transfer lines screw in, is there teflon seals in them also?
Thx bud. To be honest I can’t remember for sure but I would feel safe leaning towards an affirmative to that question 👍

Very true. I did go with the 10:1 ratio on this one and it is a bit of a trip as I’m used to the stock ratio one on my coupe
This is where my rack is leaking is this an easy fix or should I throw in a new one?
I would get a new one
So no need to buy new seal washers since there on the caps to the new rack ? I know the orings can be reused but the seal washers are a one time use .
Very cool video once again! Keep up the good work!
Thank you!!! Will do 👍
Expected to see a flaming river manual rack install haha.

I’ve never heard that before? The one I purchased has worked flawlessly 👍
Great video!
Thx buddy!
I've never changed my rack on my 89 at 167k miles I'm on borrowed time at this point.
LOL its true!
Thanks buddy, I’m about to have to do it.
Yessir!

Hahahaha thx sir!!!

They commonly leak where the hoses attach to the rack. After that it’s anyones guess 🤷♂️
@@KASLCustoms appreciate it. Thought maybe from up above where the rag joint connects to the shaft.. Leaks good with no fluid haha ;)
😂😂👍
Maybe a little olive oil on the seal? Olive oil goes with everything. lol
🤣 I’m Italian so I agree whole heartedly 😉👌
When I do those seals I put them in my mouth and work them with my teeth a bit before installing them.
Lol that’s not a bad little trick either 👌👍
Great tip
Nightmare job on these, man these ford steering systems of this era are awful at best especially the pumps
You got that right!
