  • Richard Lawrence Hatch (May 21, 1945 - February 7, 2017) was an American actor, writer, and producer best known for his role as Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica television series, and also as Tom Zarek in the 2003 remake of Battlestar Galactica.
Hatch began his theatrical career with the Los Angeles Repertory Theater. In the late 1960s, he starred Off Broadway in several plays and musicals and won an Obie Award for his work in PS Your Cat is Dead in Chicago. Hatch began working in television in 1970 when he starred as Philip Brent in the daytime soap opera All My Children, a role he played for two years. For some years, he then made guest appearances in primetime series such as Cannon, Nakia, Barnaby Jones, Hawaii Five-O, and The Waltons, as well as appearing in several made-for-TV movies such as The Hatfields and McCoys with Jack Palance, Addie and the King of Hearts with Jason Robards, Last of the Belles with Susan Sarandon, and the 1978 TV movie Deadman's Curve in which he portrayed Jan Berry of the musical duo Jan and Dean. In 1976, Hatch gained his first major television role as Inspector Dan Robbins on the detective series The Streets of San Francisco, a replacement for Michael Douglas (who played Insp. Steve Keller) who had left the series that year. Hatch then gained a starring role in Glen A. Larson's sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica (1978), which aired for a single season before cancellation. Hatch was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the role. Throughout the 1980s, Hatch made guest appearances on such series as Hotel; Murder, She Wrote; The Love Boat; and Fantasy Island. In 1984, he appeared in several episodes of Dynasty, which was at the top of the ratings at the time. In 1990, Hatch returned to daytime soap operas and appeared on Santa Barbara, originating the character Steven Slade. He continued to make guest appearances on prime time series such as Jake and the Fatman and Baywatch, but roles were becoming few and far between. His next prominent role would be as Tom Zarek in the reimagined version of Battlestar Galactica, in which he made semi-regular appearances from 2004-09. Hatch has made several low-key theatrical film releases, including Best Friends (1975), Deadman's Curve (1978), Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen (1981), and Prisoners of the Lost Universe (1983). Hatch has also made numerous television commercials and performed a variety of voice-overs.
Hatch passed away on February 7, 2017 from pancreatic cancer under hospice care in Los Angeles at the age of 71.

I am so shocked and saddend by the passing of Richard Hatch. I did not know he was ill. Very nice tribute for someone that meant so much to so many. I am 50 and remember when the original series came out and became a fan. He was my hero. When the reimagined series came out and my then around 12 or 13 year old son became a fan and thought the reimagined was a new concept. I told him oh wait thats not new. Let me show you what the real deal. I found the original on dvd at the video store and my son and I watched all 22 episodes in one day! He was like wow that was great!
My son like me became an instant fan of THE REAL APOLLO. And even got to meet him one year I think like 2013 at Dallas Comicom. He was so enchanted with Mr. Hatch. And Mr. Hatch was so patient and kind to my son and his friends asking a million questions. Even I got all giddy and excited like middle school girl admiring her crush. Fun times. You will be missed. RIP. I am so sad.

Richard Hatch MADE Battlestar Galactica!! He was the glue that held the show together! I absolutely loved the show when I was about 10 years old. All Galactica fans are so sad but we can see him anytime we want with our Bluray collection. I hope to meet him on the other side where GOD lives.

I first saw him on Streets of San Francisco, as Inspector Dan Robbins. He was added as Michael Douglas ' replacement. The show only ran another year with Hatch, but I really liked him on that show. Hate to say, I never was that big of a Battlestar fan, but I definitely respected the show for it's originality. May Apollo rest in peace

Really? My parents told me that. I had a crush on him until 1 day I saw his blue 👀. Wasn't he dreamy with these straight teeth in the old days?

Mai oui, Richard Hatch played Detective Dan Robbins when he replaced Michael Douglas who played Inspector Steven "Steve" Keller. 👍🏻s up if you researched it on Wikipedia.

I never met him in person but I heard he was pretty cool and he was a good actor. A shame Karl Malden didn't like him and it was because Richard acted like he was a big shot on The Streets Of San Francisco. Karl Malden told him that if he stays focused he can be a big actor someday and Richard defiantly replies "I'm already a big actor!" That is where Richard was wrong. He just came off All My Children and Karl Malden was acting long before him plus he lacked the chemistry that Karl Malden and Michael Douglas had
