Polymeters 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 7

  • Hello guys!
Do you remember the little 5 vs 7 vs 3 polymeters tutorial?
Here's the same poly but adding a kick in 4, as some of you asked :D
The 7 is actually a 14 if I want to relate to a same 16th notes subdivision.
If I played only the first note of each group of notes, this could also be seen as a 60 vs 140 vs 105 vs 84 polyrhythm (haha) happening in a very zoomed in (or a veeeery long) bar! But it's the same principle: it's about superposing different groups of notes using the same common subdivision.
Philip Maniez first told me about this fun poly.
    Enjoy!
In the live from 2 days after this vid I explain how I'm working these kinds of rhythms!
You can support me here: bit.ly/3aFuS1h
I'd like to really thank you all for the new subscriptions, likes and comments, you really warmed my heart!
I decided to give it a try to monetizing my channel, but I'd like to know if you're ok with it. I'd really appreciate if you could answer this quick survey:

  • @nickphipp1949

This is how I teach these polymeters. 3 x 5 x 8 = 120. In effect, the ostinato resolves (returns to the beginning) after 120 beats.
    I then write the patterns into a 120-long grid. In this example, 40 x 3 beat, 24 x 5 beat and 15 x 8-beat patterns.
The three patterns can then be read as a simpler linear exercise, returning to the beginning after 120 beats.
    This works for all polymeter ostinatos. For example, 3 x 2 x 4 = 24, so the ostinato resolves after 24 strokes. 8 x 3 beats, 12 x 2 beats and 6 x 4 beats.
I hope this helps anyone who may be confused by the concept of polymeters.

Bummer I missed the live thing. Aside from saying this is some really exemplary execution, just wanted to put in my two cents about this kind of ideation.
Phasing the poly is another way to get a little more mileage out of a static repeating figure. The seven here is doing it's thing because the phasing is matching the number of the drums its being orchestrated with. But if you move to a number of drums where the phasing is out, you end up with a cycle within the seven. Granted, in this case I would interpret the seven as the prominent melody so better to keep it as is, but perhaps the five could be phased in a way that it cycles longer. I like moving this kind of two-note five phrase across three voices to make it stretch and do other things.
But again- these studies have a spectacular result. Awesome :)
